Stanton Boys and Girls seeking improvement this season

Team: Stanton

Mascot: Mustangs

Colors: Orange and Black

Class: D-1

Conference: East Husker

Head Coach: Cole Beebe 1st season)

2019-2020 record: 5-18 (lost to Crofton in Sub Districts)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Stanton Boys look to improve upon their 5-18 mark last year under new Head Coach Cole Beebe.

The Mustangs bring back some returning experience in the likes of Parker Krusemark (6'3, PG/SG JR), Brennan Wragge (5'4, SR PG), Mason Bruggeman 6'3, SR SF), and Ben Butterfield (5'11, JR PG/SG).

Coach Beebe says the unknown surrounding the season given the pandemic is killing his team. "Just the idea hanging over our heads as coaches of "will the season be cancelled or postponed" can be daunting and nerve wrecking. Means for us we either need to cram our install time in larger chunks of practice, or take it slow in prep for the long haul. That's tough for my players to not know what to expect."

It's definitely a day-by-day, wait and see approach this year that is for sure.

Things do appear as if they are going to start on time though so that is a very good sign.

I look for Stanton to be improved from last year and have a good season.

The Mustangs have dropped down to Class D-1, which really only affects them come Sub-District Time.

The schedule remains pretty much the same as if Stanton was in C-2.

I will say one thing though I think the tough schedule will allow the Mustangs to be prepared come Sub-District Time.

Having Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family and Howells-Dodge in the same Sub-District certainly provides a tall task though.

Season Outlook:

The Stanton Boys, like everyone else across the State, will have to play in front of 25% capacity gyms and immediate household family members this year.

Coach Beebe shares his thoughts on the whole thing. "I think the online streaming options available are a good adjustment to how the season for spectators looks. As for the players, it can be more intimidating not being able to lose a parent's voice in the crowd and hearing them clear as day with the gym being sparse. Our players will have to be able to make their own excitement on the bench and have sharp enough focus to keep their senses on the game at hand."

The Mustangs will definitely have to adjust and adapt that's for sure. The thing of it is though is that everyone else is in the same boat as them so there should be no advantage or disadvantage to the whole thing.

Coach Beebe says the team is ready to get things started. "I'm very excited with this being my first year as head coach. We've established a great atmosphere on the team thus far and the kids missed being in the gym more than anything since summertime. We're all ready here in Stanton to make our mark in the gyms of our conference this year. We play basketball today, we play basketball tomorrow, we are family always-- always."

I can tell you one thing.... I don't think Stanton or anyone else for that matter is going to take any game or practice for granted this year.

And that honestly should bring out the best in the Mustangs.

I fully expect Stanton to compete at a very high level this year and play extra hard due to this whole pandemic.

I'm just hoping the whole season gets played and there's no disruptions or alterations to things whatsoever.

Stanton is in Sub-District D1-3 with Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, Howells-Dodge, and Cedar Bluffs.

Conference: East Husker

Head Coach: Greg Wegner (6th season) (81-46 record)

2019-2020 record: 6-18 (lost to Clarkson/Leigh in Sub-Districts)

Returning Starters: 3

Overview:

The Stanton Girls are looking for improvement this year under 6th year Head Coach Greg Wegner after going 6-18 a year ago.

The Mustangs bring back 3 starters in Sylvia Cunningham (6'0, JR P), Savannah Siebrandt (5'7, JR G), and Kinley Pohlman (5'8, JR G). Other returning letterwinners include Guard Bridgett Jensen and Post Ellie Locke.

Newcomers likely to contribute include Olivia Cunningham (5'10), Arynn Spence (5'10), Madison Wragge (5'4), and Zoe Wiedeman (5'7).

I think Stanton has some good size, speed, and athleticism.

Coach Wegner says the team looks to be stronger than they were a year ago. "We are looking to be much more competitive than last year. We are looking for more scoring from our older classes, as last year we relied upon our underclassmen to carry the load for the team. I expect more confidence and production from this year's squad. It will be interesting, however, since the summer was cut from the program this year due to COVID-19."

Not having a normal summer hurts no doubt, but a lot of other teams are in the same boat.

Coach Wegner says it has been a year unlike any other. "Things are much different this year. We had our summer schedule cut from the program, and now we have to take precautions to reduce our chances of affecting our team with the virus. As far as practices are going, it is not that big of an adjustment, since the kids and coaches are used to wearing masks at school all day. It will be interesting to see what happens with the season or what kind of season it will be. I think we are extremely lucky to get fall sports in, I hope we can still get at least part of a season."

It does appear as if things will be starting on time so that is a good sign.

Hopefully we get through Winter Sports and have a full season and there are no cancellations or postponements of any kind due to COVID-19 whatsoever.

That might not be possible though, and if it's not hopefully those types of things can be kept to a minimum.

Season Outlook:

The Stanton Girls, like everyone else in the State of Nebraska, will have to play in front of 25% capacity gyms and just immediate household family members this year.

Coach Wegner says he doesn't think this will have a negative impact on his team. "I really don't think it will be that different. Unless it is a big rivalry game, the stands are not packed full of fans at the C2 level. The kids want to play and compete, they don't care much about who is in the stands. I am sure some of the kids will be less nervous with just their parent in the stand and not as many onlookers."

I would agree with that last statement from Coach Wegner.

There should be less pressure and things of that nature I would think.

Coach Wegner adds he's ready for the team to show how much they've improved. "I am very excited for the year. I want to see how much my young team has grown over the past year. We didn't have a season we wanted last year, but we were relying on a lot of young players to carry the heavy load for the team. Their inexperience showed, but now with a solid year of experience, I want to see what they can do. We have great kids here that are good teammates, I just want to see them have more success and for their hard work and dedication to each other to pay off."

I look for the Mustangs to have a better season than last year, and have a nice bounce back year if you may.

I think Stanton will be strong defensively once again, and feel their offense will be improved.

I think it's important for the Mustangs to do well in and win the close games.

Stanton's ability to come through in big moments and play up to their potential this year figure to tell the tale of the tape on how the season goes if you will.

The Mustangs are in Sub-District C2-6 with Clarkson/Leigh, Norfolk Catholic, Lutheran High Northeast, and Madison.

I look for Stanton to be competitive within that Sub-District when the time comes.

Tekamah-Herman Boys and Girls looking for returners and newcomers to lead them to successful years

Team: Tekamah-Herman

Mascot: Tigers

Colors: Purple, Vegas Gold

Class: C-2

Conference: East Husker

Head Coach: Taylor Klein (1st season)

2019-2020 record: 4-18 (lost to West Point-Beemer in Sub Districts)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Tekamah-Herman Boys look for improvement this year under First Year Head Coach Taylor Klein, who was an assistant and takes over for Zach Rosenboom, who is now the school's AD.

The Tigers' probable varsity roster is

Brock Rogers    11   6’3    Small Forward  13.9 PPG (19-20)
Dylan Chatt    12   5’7    Point Guard
Jed Hoover    11   6’    Shooting Guard     11.7 PPG (19-20)
Wyatt Deemer    11   5’9    Shooting Guard
Kaleb Quick    11   6’1    Power Forward
Eldridge Jensen  12    6’2   Center
Drew Oligmueller 10 5’11 Power Forward
Reece Williams   9   6’2    Small Forward
Thatcher Zink    10   5’6    Point Guard
Noah Stahr    11   6’3    Center

Coach Klein says he and the team have expectations to win and succeed. "In my first year as head coach, I have high expectations for the team, and I know they do too. Our goal as a team is to win half our games this year and continue to build on that next year. Led by juniors Brock Rogers and Jed Hoover, we’ll have the athleticism and talent to put together a successful season and hopefully shock a few teams along the way."

Tekamah-Herman has pretty good depth, and should fair well this season.

The Tigers are looking to change the culture and get things turned around, and I feel Tekamah-Herman has a chance to do just that.

Of course the Coronavirus Pandemic has sort of thrown a wrench into everything.

Coach Klein says his team has remained good sports and been cooperative this whole time. "Things have been a lot different. This offseason, initially it looked as if everything was going to be cancelled. However, it turned out that we were still able to attend a team camp and schedule some summer games against some conference opponents. Now, getting ready for the season, we've got some requirements like wearing masks in practice, sanitizing the balls and locker rooms, and taking any other precautions necessary for us to keep being able to play. Thankfully, our team understands that to have the chance to play, these are things we must do. So, they've been good about keeping their masks on and doing the things we ask of them while still working hard in practice and preparing for the season."

You simply have to do whatever it takes to play and have a season this year.

Season Outlook:

The Tekamah-Herman Boys will have to play in front of just immediate household members and 25% capacity gyms this year as will everyone else.

Coach Klein tells KTIC Sports his team will adapt and make the most of it. "It will definitely be strange at the beginning, but I think we'll find a way to get used to it and find our own motivations during the game without the help of our crowd. Again, when it comes down to it, we just want the chance to play. Thankfully, most of the schools we play now have Striv to stream our games to the fans that can't attend due to the regulations."

And of course some Tekamah-Herman games will also be able to be heard on 107.9 the Bull.

Coach Klein says the team is ready to get out there and prove themselves. "The team and us coaches are extremely excited for the season to get going. Our boys have been working hard in practice and in the weight room to start this season and we can't wait to show people the progress we've made."

I look for the Tigers to do some great and special things this year.

Tekamah-Herman returns quite a bit from last year and has a good group, and I think the Tigers will be competitive.

Tekamah-Herman has decent size, but the team is comprised of mostly Juniors and Seniors, and that should bode well for the Tigers the next couple of years I would think.

The Tigers have a lot of work ahead of them, but Tekamah-Herman can definitely accomplish anything and everything they put their minds to.

The sky is the limit for the Tigers, in my opinion.

Tekamah-Herman is in Sub-District C2-3 with GACC, Clarkson/Leigh, Oakland-Craig, and Wisner-Pilger.

Tough Sub-District for sure, but I know the Tigers really want it.

Team: Tekamah-Herman

Mascot: Tigers

Colors: Purple, Vegas Gold

Class: C-2

Conference: East Husker

Head Coach: David Eriksen (4th season) (22-49 record)

2019-2020 record: 10-13 (lost to Yutan in Sub Districts)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Tekamah-Herman Girls showed big time improvement last year, winning 10 games after winning just 6 in each of Head Coach David Eriksen's first two seasons.

The Tigers bring back the likes of Maggie Sheets, Halle Olsen, Leann Hawkins, Elena Jetensky, and Kaitlyn Quick.

Tekamah-Herman also has 6 freshmen out for the team this year.

Coach Eriksen says the Pandemic has thrown everything for a loop. "We lost four seniors, three of which started, and have six new Freshmen out. This pandemic has certainly been difficult to navigate in the sense of having opportunities to get everyone together. With sports being limited starting in the summer my concern was being able to provide enough opportunities for the athletes to not only get enough shots in, but to learn new plays and become familiar with each other on the court. Those limited opportunities in the summer became even more limited as the winter season came closer and closer to starting. At Tekamah-Herman we turned to remote learning the week prior to the season starting, thus limiting our opportunities again. So, to finally get to our first practice week is a relief, but also a chaotic one at that."

The Tigers nearly doubled their win total from 2018-2019 to last year, and I think even more wins are a possibility this season.

Tekamah-Herman simply has to go out there and play well and perform at a high level, which I think they can do.

Season Outlook:

The Tekamah-Herman Girls, like everyone else, will have to play in front of just immediate household members and 25% gym capacity.

That figures to present and pose some challenges for the Tigers.

Coach Eriksen says the team will have to rely on each other more now than ever before. "Playing in front of limited attendance will certainly be different, but as I have always told the girls they have to be able to create their own energy. Feeding off momentum will be critical to close the gap or getting ahead in every quarter."

Strong defense and an improved offense and an ability to win close games are critical and crucial to Tekamah-Herman's success, in my opinion.

The Tigers have to be on top of things and their game this year.

Coach Eriksen says the team is excited to get going. "We are all excited and look forward to whatever kind of season Covid-19 will throw at us. This is another opportunity for kids to feel like kids again and I know we are anxious to get back on the court and prove teams wrong."

Tekamah-Herman is in Sub-District C2-3 with GACC, Howells-Dodge, and Wisner-Pilger.

Howells-Dodge Boys and Girls look for returners to lead them to big seasons

Team: Howells-Dodge

Mascot: Jaguars

Colors: Green, Black, Silver

Class: D-1

Conference: East Husker

Head Coach: Kevin Janata (3rd season) (32-21 record)

2019-2020 record: 14-11 (lost to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in Sub-District Final)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Howells-Dodge Boys look for a big year under 3rd year Head Coach Kevin Janata.

The Jaguars bring back a host of players, and they are

G Jacob Tomcak 6'0" Sr.

G Blake Sindelar 6’2” Jr.

P RJ Bayer         6'2" Jr.

G Gavin Nelson 5'10"Jr.

G Lance Brester 6’2” So.

P Aandy Dominguez 5’11”So.

Others likely to contribute include Sophomores Aiden Meyer (6'3) and Brittin Sindelar (5'6).

The Jaguars are young, but talented no doubt.

Howells-Dodge should be strong this year, and even better next year I would say.

Coach Janata says the team has a lot of promise. "Young team, but we have some good experience returning from last year. The team should be very competitive with the potential of going to state. We have good leadership with our senior, Jacob Tomcak, coming back with two year starters Blake Sindelar and RJ Bayer. Gavin Nelson, Aandy Dominguez, and Lance Brester all played good minutes last year, and several other underclassman have a chance to contribute."

Of course the Coronavirus Pandemic has thrown everything for a loop.

Coach Janata breaks down how it has impacted his team to this point. "The pandemic has affected every aspect of our season at this point. We had a late start for summer training as we were not allowed to have open gyms or summer league games until July. However, the kids did a great job of doing what they could on their own. So far, practice has been very interesting trying to make sure we are keeping things sanitized and safe and that the kids are wearing their masks. The masks can be a nuisance at times, but if it's what we have to do to keep the kids safe and have a season, we absolutely will do it."

Season Outlook:

Games this year will have to be played in front of just immediate household members and 25% capacity gyms.

Coach Janata says things won't be the same. "I think the atmosphere will definitely be different this year. It is disappointing we can't have full gyms and the crowds will be limited, but we will play in empty gyms as long as we can continue to play and have a season."

It's unfortunate that students sections and bands a like won't be able to be at the games, but it is what it is.

Coach Janata says the team is making the most of the situation. "The kids have been very energetic in practice. I think they realize that at any time, our season could be shut down to help stop the spread of covid. We are taking the season one day at a time, not taking anything for granted and just being grateful for every practice and game we do get to play."

I'm sure the Jaguars understand and realize that every practice, every game they play could be their last.

Howells-Dodge has to treat every game and practice extra special, and go out there and have a great season.

The Jaguars have to dedicate themselves to playing at a high level and finding a way to win close ball games and having success.

Howells-Dodge has to play with a lot of will, determination, grit, and heart each and every time out this season.

The Jaguars are in Sub-District D1-3 with Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, Stanton, and Cedar Bluffs.

Head Coach: Scott Polacek (29th season) (396-233 record)

2019-2020 record: 9-14 (lost to Clarkson/Leigh in Sub-District Final)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Howells-Dodge Girls look to be a good and strong team this year under long time Head Coach Scott Polacek.

The Jaguars return players like Cassie Pieper, Riley Pokorny, Janessa Schmidt, Brooklyn Macholan, Lilly Praest, Sasha Perrin, and Jaedyn Ratzlaff.

Howells-Dodge returns quite a bit from last year's squad and has a good strong core group of newcomers as well.

I look for the Jaguars to be much improved from their 9-14 records of the past two seasons.

Of course the Coronavirus Pandemic has complicated things for everyone this year.

Coach Polacek says his team was still able to go up against some quality competition over the summer. "The pandemic messed with our entire summer, but it turned out to be good and bad at times. It affected the weight room and stopped all the camps which we had scheduled. However, we were able to host a team camp with Pender and Wynot. Both are top-notch teams, so that camp was a bonus for us. We also attended Gretna's camp and played some tough teams there. We got plenty of individual work in, which was better than in past years."

I think seeing that level of competition over the summer is only going to help strengthen and bolster Howells-Dodge this season.

Season Outlook:

The Howells-Dodge Girls, like everyone else across the state, will have to play in front of just immediate household members and 25% capacity gyms this season.

Coach Polacek shares his outlook on the situation. "While the noise may be down a bit, the way we play the game won't change. I am very happy that family members can see their daughters play. Hopefully the others have a little internet access so they can tune in from time to time from their home."

The Jaguars will have to create their own energy and spark, and find some will from within to perform at a high level.

Coach Polacek says the team is excited for the beginning of the season as usual. "The excitement of the first week never changes, no matter whom you return for letterwinners, seniors, or in the middle of rebuilding. Week 1 is fun, because the sky's the limit."

I think Howells-Dodge has a great chance to be successful this year.

It should be a fun filled, action packed, and entertaining season full of memories and laughs for the Jaguars this year.

Howells-Dodge is in Sub-District C2-3 with GACC, Wisner-Pilger, and Tekamah-Herman.

Tri County Northeast Boys and Girls ready to take aim in 1st year of Co-op

Team: Tri County Northeast

Mascot: Wolfpack

Colors: Carolina Blue, Black, Gray, and White

Class: C-2

Conference: Lewis and Clark

Head Coach: Chris Blohm

Overview:

A new Co-op has been born, and that is the Tri County Northeast Wolfpack, which is comprised of Emerson-Hubbard and Allen.

The Head Coach is Chris Blohm, who is in his 2nd season after coaching Allen last year.

Returning players from both schools from last year include Garrett Blanke Jr. 6-1 G/F, Brock Mackling Jr. 6-0 G/F, Nate Oswald Jr. 6-2 G, Ty Krommenhoek Jr. 6-1 G, Josh Olesen Jr. 6-1 G/F, Kobe Kumm Sr. 5-8 G, Reed Hingst Sr. 6-0 G/F, Anthony Isom Sr. 5-10 F, Ryan Kinnaman Sr. 5-9 G, Mason Hall Sr. 6-2 G/F, and Steven Sullivan Sr. 6-2 F.

Newcomers include Stephon Small Fr. 5-9 G, Michael Dickens Fr. 5-9 G, Marquise Moniz-Sodofsky Fr. 6-1 G/F, Hunter Heikes Fr. 5-10 G/F, Caidan Gregg So. 5-10 G, Brody Floyd So. 5-10 F, Joe Grone So. 5-10 G, Colton Stallbaum  So. 5-9 G, Jose Rodriguez So. 5-10 G, and Nick Busker Jr. 5-10 G/F.

Coach Blohm discusses how his team has responded to the Coronavirus Pandemic. "The pandemic hasn’t had much effect on how practice has been run. The only difference is to try to limit the time we are doing a drill and split it into groups as much as possible. Overall, we are trying to keep practices competitive as possible given the current circumstances. The players know how unpredictable this situation is, and they are taking advantage of ensuring they have no regrets."

I'm sure all these kids are competing very hard against one another for playing time, and making one another better.

Allen had a good season last year, and Emerson-Hubbard was good in 2018-2019 so I think this Co-op has a chance to do very well this year.

Coach Blohm says the Wolfpack expects a lot out of themselves. This season will be determined by our ability to come together as a team. This will be our first year as the Tri County Northeast Wolfpack coop. We will be returning a lot of strong, athletic players from both Emerson-Hubbard and Allen. Our ability to make plays offensively will be a huge factor in how our season plays out, but our ability to defend is something we can rely on when the shots are not falling. Even as a first-year coop, the players and coaches have high expectations for the season, and we feel we have the ability to win a lot of games."

The Wolfpack is in Class C-2 so that will make for a tough challenge come Sub-District Time, but Tri County Northeast has a lot of talented kids and athletes from both schools as Coach Blohm said, and I look for them to do well this year.

Season Outlook:

Tri County Northeast has to play its inaugural game and season in front of just immediate household members and 25% capacity gyms.

Kind of a tough way to start, but it is what it is.

Coach Blohm doesn't think it will have much of an impact on the Wolfpack given the schools' size. "With being such a small school, it doesn’t affect us as much as it would a bigger school. I think that no matter what the situation is, the kids will play as hard as they can, and give great support from the bench. Families are always the main supporters in the stands, so I do not see any changes in that aspect."

This is very true, but not having the student body and band all all that sort of thing there will definitely make it a different dynamic for sure.

Coach Blohm says the team is just happy to play and will enjoy playing. "The players and coaches are just excited to have an opportunity to play. No matter what happens, we are trying to create memories for the players. All the coaches can ask for is for the players to give there best effort every time they step on the court. They know that every day could change, and that is something we do not need to remind them. I feel that it is just a known factor to this season, and no one can control what happens. My main focus is for them to enjoy the process and just control what they can control. We want the players to focus on playing, while the coaches make the adjustments to accommodate to the situation."

The Wolfpack is in Sub-District C2-4 with BRLD, Wakefield, Ponca, and Omaha Nation.

A very tough and difficult Sub-District for sure, but I guess Tri County Northeast can cross that bridge when they get there.

Right now the focus has to be playing and keeping everyone healthy as possible.

Conference: Lewis and Clark

Overview:

Tri County Northeast goes at it in Girls Basketball after competing together in Volleyball this past fall.

The Wolfpack is coached by Evan Colfack, who is in his 1st year.

Returners include Carly Dickens Sr 5’1 PG, SG 14 2019-2020 Letter Winner, Alli Jackson Sr 5’7 SG 2 2019-2020 Letter Winner, Jordyn Carr Jr 5’6 PG,SG 22 2019-2020 Letter Winner, Max Preps regional player of the week, First Team All Conference, 19ppg, 118 rebounds, 86 assists, 106 steals, Brynn Schock Jr 5’9 P 24 2019-2020 Letter Winner, Jazmin Delatorre Jr 5’6 SG 20 2019-2020 Letter Winner, Brianna Bousquet So 5’7 SG 3 2019-2020 Letter Winner, Elizabeth Sattler So 5’6 P 13 2019-2020 Letter Winner, Charlie Doyle So 5’3 SG 4 2019-2020 Letter Winner, and Katie Utech So 5’9 P 10 2019-2020 Letter Winner.

Newcomers include Taylor Boyle Sr 5’6 SG 15, Rhyanne Mackling Fr 5’6 PG,SG 5, Ava Anderson Fr 5’9 P 30, Olivia Dekok Fr 5’7 P 35, Codi Olson Fr 5’1 SG 1, and Adyson Vraspir Fr 5’6 SG 11.

Coach Colfack says the start of the Co-op didn't go as planned due to COVID-19. "This summer was completely different due to the coronavirus pandemic. We were hoping to get the co-op kicked off by combining summer weights programs to get the kids involved with one another. That was cancelled due to the pandemic and each school held their own summer weights program. Normally there would be multiple open gyms throughout the summer and summer leagues, but many of those were canceled. We were very fortunate to have BEST basketball camp hosted between the two schools."

Many other schools were in the same boat as Tri County Northeast due to this nasty virus.

Coach Colfack says the Wolfpack has a strong core nucleus of players back between the two schools. "Tri County Northeast girls basketball is starting their very first season together as a new co-op. We have two returning seniors, Carly Dickens and Alli Jackson who played for Wakefield-Allen co-op last season. Jordyn Carr, a junior, was also part of last year’s Wakefield-Allen co-op. She will be accompanied by two more Emerson-Hubbard Juniors, Jazmin Delatorre and Brynn Schock. Brianna Bousquet, Katie Utech, Elizabeth Sattler, and Charlie Doyle are returning Sophomores from Emerson Hubbard. Taylor Boyle (a senior) and five freshman, Rhyanne Mackling, Ava Anderson, Olivia Dekok, Codi Olson, and Adyson Vraspir are the newcomers of the group."

This should help offset any challenges Tri County Northeast may face with reduced capacity at games.

Season Outlook:

Tri County Northeast will have to play with immediate household members only, and 25% gym capacity.

Everyone else is in the same boat of course given the Winter Sports DHM's.

Coach Colfack says the team will have to adjust, but is just glad to play. "It is going to be different playing in front of immediate household members only, but I’m just glad we are getting the opportunity to start the season on time. The girls are really going to have to communicate on the court and on the bench to get any sort of atmosphere."

Coach Colfack looks for the success the Wolfpack had in Volleyball to carry over to Basketball. "Many of these girls started off the co-op playing volleyball. As a first year co-op, they had a lot of success. It is always tough learning a new coach and teammates, they battled through some ups and down but ultimately got better from the beginning of the season to the end. For basketball, we will now build on those relationships. The bar has been set for Tri County Northeast. I have no doubt the girls will now do the same as they did in volleyball and get better every single week. No matter what their roles were last year, they are going to be asked to elevate to another level if we want to have another successful season."

I certainly feel like this Co-op has the potential to do well this year and in the future, especially given who all is on the team from both schools.

Coach Colfack says the Co-op has been a really good thing. "I am very excited for this new co-op. We are lucky to have amazing administration at both schools to make this transition smooth. The Tri County Northeast volleyball team already saw tremendous success. I believe the girls basketball team will build off of that success and continue to build a culture."

I'm sure the Wolfpack is very excited to get the season started.

Tri County Northeast is in Sub-District D1-3 with Osmond, Plainview, Wausa, and Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family.

Those teams certainly pose a different and unique challenge, but one I'm sure the Wolfpack will be ready to meet when the time comes.

West Point-Beemer Boys and Girls looking for returning experience to lead to big things

Team: West Point-Beemer

Mascot: Cadets

Colors: Red, Black, and White

Class: C-1

Conference: East Husker

Head Coach: Jahn Kile (2nd season)

2019-2020 record: 6-19 (lost to Wayne in Sub-Districts)

Returning Starters: 5

Overview:

The West Point-Beemer Boys return everyone from last year and look for big things under 2nd year Head Coach Jahn Kile.

The returners include Jesus Barragan (5'10, SR PG), Scott Kienbaum (5'5, SR), Drake Repschlaeger, Riley Penrose, Keegan Doggett (6'2, JR SG), Zach Vander Griend (6'0, SR), Miguel Perez, 6'5, JR C/PF), and Jaylen Kile (SO, SF).

I think the strong finish to the season last year can yield bigger and better results for the Cadets this year.

Coach Kile says things have been different dealing with the Pandemic. "It's been different this year because the players must wear masks at practice. The feeling of staying apart and social distancing makes things feel a little weird. We've also had some players out due to the virus and we've had some injuries from football which makes things a little different."

The injuries from football could certainly hamper or hurt West Point-Beemer, at least early on in the season.

The Cadets will simply have to overcome the injuries due to Football. There's not a lot that can be done about players missing time due to the virus given everything that is already in place at the school and the state so that's just something West Point-Beemer along with everyone else will have to deal with this year.

Season Outlook:

The West Point-Beemer Boys will have to play in front of just immediate household members and 25% capacity gyms.

Everyone else is in the same situation of course, and it's just something the Cadets and everyone will have to adjust and adapt to.

Coach Kile says it won't affect the team much. "To be honest the limited fans won't make that much difference. The game on the court is where most of our focus goes anyway. The summer leagues and games usually don't have many fans, so I imagine it will be a lot like summer basketball."

The Cadets simply have to go out there and play, and just play their game at all times.

Coach Kile shares his thoughts on the start of the season. "The anticipation for the season has been one of the things which have been like a roller coaster. The ups and downs and the thoughts of having the season pushed back or canceled makes it tougher. Not being able to control what other schools will do may also be a big part of the season. If other schools cancel games, more than likely they won't be rescheduled. I think the players need the season. So many of them were cheated out of their Spring sports and they need to have the opportunity to play."

I completely agree with Coach Kile. I think it's imperative and paramount that the kids play, in a safe manner of course.

I really feel as if there will be a season, it's just hard saying how and what that will look like exactly.

I would simply say that West Point-Beemer has to be ready to play, but be ready to adapt to anything and everything thrown their way.

The Cadets are in Sub-District C1-7 with Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, Winnebago, and Wayne.

Team: West Point-Beemer

Mascot: Cadets

Colors: Red, Black, and White

Class: C-1

Conference: East Husker

Head Coach: Taylor Shepard (3rd season) (46-9 record)

2019-2020 record: 23-6 (Lost to North Bend Central in first round of state)

Returning Starters: 5

Overview:

The West Point-Beemer Girls are looking for a breakout year this year, and figure to have the opportunity to do it too with basically everybody back from last year.

The Cadets welcome back the likes of Brooklyn Weddle (5'4, SR PG), Rachel Groth (5'10, PF/C SR), Reece Snodgrass (5'6, PG/SG SR), Sidney Swanson (5'6, SR PG), Emily Toelle (JR SG), Jadyn Meiergerd 5'7, JR PG/SG), Katie Rainforth (JR PF), and Katie Groth (SO PF/C.

Of course the Coronavirus Pandemic had an impact on the offseason. 3rd year Head Coach Taylor Shepard says the team has simply continued to go with the flow. "While this season has looked a little different, our girls have really taken it all in stride. Our practices have still been filled with energy and we have enjoyed being on the court. We haven't really noticed a change with COVID protocols, but are continuing to focus on our game and helping our team be as successful as possible this season."

West Point-Beemer figures to have a great and dynamic season once again this year.

I really feel as if the Cadets are going to be better and well equipped to win a game at State this year if not more.

I really think this is West Point-Beemer's best chance to not only go down to State again, but win this time around.

The Cadets want to be competing for State Championships, and it wouldn't shock me if West Point-Beemer was right in the mix of doing just that this year.

Season Outlook:

The West Point-Beemer Girls will be playing in front of just immediate household members and 25% capacity gyms, just like every other team will be.

Coach Shepard says things will be different, but feels the team will rely on each other to be successful. "We are fortunate enough to have a lot of community support at our games, and it will definitely be a different atmosphere this season. However, we are so thankful for the opportunity to go out and compete, and are focused on our team and what we need to do to reach our goals. Our players on the bench are so involved in the games, and are a huge intangible that we bring into each game, so I think that will be to our benefit this season."

Swanson recently signed with the University of Sioux Falls so I'm sure that's something the team is excited about for her.

Swanson has helped lead the Cadets to back-to-back State Tournament Appearances, and says expectations are high heading into this year. "Yeah I have really high goals and standards for the season. My ultimate goal would probably be with the Pandemic and COVID s that we get to have a full season. And then we have some higher competition games this year, and really think we can win a lot of those. And then yeah just to make a run in Conference and win that. And then make it to the State Tournament and hopefully go far in the tournament and compete for a State Championship. We've had four seniors that have been playing together since 3rd grade, and I think it would be great if we could end it down in Lincoln together."

I think it would be so great if the Cadets could end up playing at Pinnacle Bank Arena come State Tournament time.

That would truly be a dream come true for these players, and it would be awesome if West Point-Beemer could play on the Huskers' home floor.

Coach Shepard says the team is very excited for the potential they have this season. "It has been a good start to the season thus far, and we are really excited for this team and what they are capable of accomplishing. Our girls have big goals for the season, so we are focusing on taking advantage of each time that we step foot onto the floor."

I really think a 3rd or a 4th place finish at State this year is very possible, and who knows, perhaps the Cadets could make it to the State Championship and win the whole ball of wax.

We will simply see how things go and transpire this year.

West Point-Beemer has a really tough Sub-District as they are in C1-5 with North Bend Central, Oakland-Craig, Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, and Arlington.

Being in that Sub-District makes every game so crucial and important and paramount if you may.

GACC Boys and Girls have high expectations coming into season

Team: Guardian Angels Central Catholic

Mascot: Bluejays

Colors: Blue and White

Class: C-2

Conference: Mid-State

Head Coach: Matt Mackling (1st season)

2019-2020 record: 11-13 (lost to Oakland-Craig in Sub-Districts)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Boys are under new leadership as Matt Mackling takes over the program for Alex Stieren.

The Bluejays lost quite a bit to graduation, but bring back the likes of Brendan Rief, Nate Niewohner, Ben Ulrich, and Cody Steffen.

GACC lost a couple of big post players in Casey Doernemann and Adam Reeson so the inside game could be a developmental area for the Bluejays this season.

Coach Mackling says the kids have been able to get quite a bit done despite the pandemic. "Things have been very different but still productive. We have been able to hold 75% of our off season conditioning outdoors due to our nice weather we've experienced so far. We had to get creative with a few workouts but feel we accomplished what was needed during this time. Season has started and we are taking every precaution to allow our boys to get as much done as possible. Even though it takes a little discipline to wear masks, wash hands and sanitize everything we will all do are part of giving us every opportunity to have a season. All the boys are on board! We have adapted well."

It sounds like GACC could very well be ahead of the curve compared to everyone else.

Expectations are always high at GACC, and I'm sure this year is no different.

I look for the Bluejays to get better as the year goes on, and have a nice, respectable season.

That is of course if we get a season, which I believe we will in some form or fashion.

Season Outlook:

GACC will have to play in front of just immediate household members and 25% capacity in gyms as will everybody else.

Coach Mackling says the kids just simply want to play. "I do think some of the boys really look forward to displaying their talents and work in front of an electric crowd but at the end of the day they want to compete and we wouldn't care if we played in a completely empty building or outdoors if it was our only option!"

It will definitely make for a different atmosphere that is for sure.

The Bluejays will definitely have to find some will from within and bring some of their own energy to play and do well.

Coach Mackling says the team has been chomping at the bit to get out there and play. "We have been more than anxious to get the season started and have been working hard to prepare! "

I'm optimistic that GACC can have some success this year.

I think the Bluejays can finish with a winning record and have a good season.

GACC is going to be fairly young this year I think so the Bluejays may struggle early, but I look for GACC to get better as the season progresses and hit their stride about midseason perhaps.

The Bluejays are in Sub-District C2-3 with Oakland-Craig, Wisner-Pilger, Clarkson/Leigh, Wisner-Pilger, and Tekamah-Herman.

Team: Guardian Angels Central Catholic

Mascot: Bluejays

Colors: Blue and White

Class: C-2

Conference: Mid-State

Head Coach: Jerry Stracke (23rd season) (453-119 career record)

2019-2020 record: 22-4 (lost to Clarkson/Leigh in Sub-State Final)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Girls figure to be very good once again this year with the return of about everybody from last year's team.

A few of the returners are Brenna Rief, Sophia Hass, and Kate Gnad.

These three along with the newcomers should provide a lot of dynamic ability for the Bluejays.

GACC had a tough loss in the Sub-State Final to Clarkson/Leigh last year, and you can bet the Bluejays have been working extremely hard to get back to the top.

Longtime Head Coach Jerry Stracke says things have been different given the Coronavirus Pandemic, however. "The coronavirus has made a big difference on how we approach things this year. We didn't get the off season that we liked to have but I guess all the teams are in the same situation. We also taking the approach with getting everything in early at practice not knowing if you will have all your players or be playing all the teams on your schedule. So maybe a little sense of urgency this year - especially falling short of make it to state last year."

With just about everybody back from last year you have to figure GACC has a great chance to make it back to State this year.

The Bluejays have to really get after things though and have to really want it. And that won't be easy given the current fan attendance situation for the season.

GACC can definitely do it though.

Season Outlook:

The GACC Girls, like everybody else, will be playing in front of just immediate household family members and 25% capacity gyms.

Coach Stracke says things won't be the same. "It's going to be different that's for sure. But we need to do everything we can to give the girls a shot at a season."

That is what is most important at the end of the day, is playing.

The Bluejays won't be playing in front of packed gyms and loud atmospheres and such though.

GACC is probably used to playing in that kind of atmosphere, but the Bluejays will simply have to create their own energy and enthusiasm and will have to be even physically and mentally tougher than before.

GACC can definitely do it, it's just going to take some adjusting and adapting from them.

Coach Stracke says the team is ready to go, but a little unsure of things at the moment. "We are very excited for the season to get started and a little apprehensive and nervous of not knowing what is going to happen or how things will end up."

I do truly believe there will be a season of some sort, it just simply depends on what and how it's going to look like.

The Bluejays are in Sub-District C2-3 with the likes of Howells-Dodge, Wisner-Pilger, and Tekamah-Herman.

It should be another big and exciting year for GACC Girls Basketball.

I'm excited to see what the Bluejays can do this year and how far they can go.
