Team: West Point-Beemer
Mascot: Cadets
Colors: Red, Black, and White
Class: C-1
Conference: East Husker
Head Coach: Jahn Kile (2nd season)
2019-2020 record: 6-19 (lost to Wayne in Sub-Districts)
Returning Starters: 5
Overview:
The West Point-Beemer Boys return everyone from last year and look for big things under 2nd year Head Coach Jahn Kile.
The returners include Jesus Barragan (5'10, SR PG), Scott Kienbaum (5'5, SR), Drake Repschlaeger, Riley Penrose, Keegan Doggett (6'2, JR SG), Zach Vander Griend (6'0, SR), Miguel Perez, 6'5, JR C/PF), and Jaylen Kile (SO, SF).
I think the strong finish to the season last year can yield bigger and better results for the Cadets this year.
Coach Kile says things have been different dealing with the Pandemic. "It's been different this year because the players must wear masks at practice. The feeling of staying apart and social distancing makes things feel a little weird. We've also had some players out due to the virus and we've had some injuries from football which makes things a little different."
The injuries from football could certainly hamper or hurt West Point-Beemer, at least early on in the season.
The Cadets will simply have to overcome the injuries due to Football. There's not a lot that can be done about players missing time due to the virus given everything that is already in place at the school and the state so that's just something West Point-Beemer along with everyone else will have to deal with this year.
Season Outlook:
The West Point-Beemer Boys will have to play in front of just immediate household members and 25% capacity gyms.
Everyone else is in the same situation of course, and it's just something the Cadets and everyone will have to adjust and adapt to.
Coach Kile says it won't affect the team much. "To be honest the limited fans won't make that much difference. The game on the court is where most of our focus goes anyway. The summer leagues and games usually don't have many fans, so I imagine it will be a lot like summer basketball."
The Cadets simply have to go out there and play, and just play their game at all times.
Coach Kile shares his thoughts on the start of the season. "The anticipation for the season has been one of the things which have been like a roller coaster. The ups and downs and the thoughts of having the season pushed back or canceled makes it tougher. Not being able to control what other schools will do may also be a big part of the season. If other schools cancel games, more than likely they won't be rescheduled. I think the players need the season. So many of them were cheated out of their Spring sports and they need to have the opportunity to play."
I completely agree with Coach Kile. I think it's imperative and paramount that the kids play, in a safe manner of course.
I really feel as if there will be a season, it's just hard saying how and what that will look like exactly.
I would simply say that West Point-Beemer has to be ready to play, but be ready to adapt to anything and everything thrown their way.
The Cadets are in Sub-District C1-7 with Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, Winnebago, and Wayne.

Overview:
The West Point-Beemer Girls are looking for a breakout year this year, and figure to have the opportunity to do it too with basically everybody back from last year.
The Cadets welcome back the likes of Brooklyn Weddle (5'4, SR PG), Rachel Groth (5'10, PF/C SR), Reece Snodgrass (5'6, PG/SG SR), Sidney Swanson (5'6, SR PG), Emily Toelle (JR SG), Jadyn Meiergerd 5'7, JR PG/SG), Katie Rainforth (JR PF), and Katie Groth (SO PF/C.
Of course the Coronavirus Pandemic had an impact on the offseason. 3rd year Head Coach Taylor Shepard says the team has simply continued to go with the flow. "While this season has looked a little different, our girls have really taken it all in stride. Our practices have still been filled with energy and we have enjoyed being on the court. We haven't really noticed a change with COVID protocols, but are continuing to focus on our game and helping our team be as successful as possible this season."
West Point-Beemer figures to have a great and dynamic season once again this year.
I really feel as if the Cadets are going to be better and well equipped to win a game at State this year if not more.
I really think this is West Point-Beemer's best chance to not only go down to State again, but win this time around.
The Cadets want to be competing for State Championships, and it wouldn't shock me if West Point-Beemer was right in the mix of doing just that this year.
Season Outlook:
The West Point-Beemer Girls will be playing in front of just immediate household members and 25% capacity gyms, just like every other team will be.
Coach Shepard says things will be different, but feels the team will rely on each other to be successful. "We are fortunate enough to have a lot of community support at our games, and it will definitely be a different atmosphere this season. However, we are so thankful for the opportunity to go out and compete, and are focused on our team and what we need to do to reach our goals. Our players on the bench are so involved in the games, and are a huge intangible that we bring into each game, so I think that will be to our benefit this season."
Swanson recently signed with the University of Sioux Falls so I'm sure that's something the team is excited about for her.
Swanson has helped lead the Cadets to back-to-back State Tournament Appearances, and says expectations are high heading into this year. "Yeah I have really high goals and standards for the season. My ultimate goal would probably be with the Pandemic and COVID s that we get to have a full season. And then we have some higher competition games this year, and really think we can win a lot of those. And then yeah just to make a run in Conference and win that. And then make it to the State Tournament and hopefully go far in the tournament and compete for a State Championship. We've had four seniors that have been playing together since 3rd grade, and I think it would be great if we could end it down in Lincoln together."
I think it would be so great if the Cadets could end up playing at Pinnacle Bank Arena come State Tournament time.
That would truly be a dream come true for these players, and it would be awesome if West Point-Beemer could play on the Huskers' home floor.
Coach Shepard says the team is very excited for the potential they have this season. "It has been a good start to the season thus far, and we are really excited for this team and what they are capable of accomplishing. Our girls have big goals for the season, so we are focusing on taking advantage of each time that we step foot onto the floor."
I really think a 3rd or a 4th place finish at State this year is very possible, and who knows, perhaps the Cadets could make it to the State Championship and win the whole ball of wax.
We will simply see how things go and transpire this year.
West Point-Beemer has a really tough Sub-District as they are in C1-5 with North Bend Central, Oakland-Craig, Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, and Arlington.
Being in that Sub-District makes every game so crucial and important and paramount if you may.
