Stanton Boys and Girls seeking improvement this season

Team: Stanton

Mascot: Mustangs

Colors: Orange and Black

Class: D-1

Conference: East Husker

Head Coach: Cole Beebe 1st season)

2019-2020 record: 5-18 (lost to Crofton in Sub Districts)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Stanton Boys look to improve upon their 5-18 mark last year under new Head Coach Cole Beebe.

The Mustangs bring back some returning experience in the likes of Parker Krusemark (6'3, PG/SG JR), Brennan Wragge (5'4, SR PG), Mason Bruggeman 6'3, SR SF), and Ben Butterfield (5'11, JR PG/SG).

Coach Beebe says the unknown surrounding the season given the pandemic is killing his team. "Just the idea hanging over our heads as coaches of "will the season be cancelled or postponed" can be daunting and nerve wrecking. Means for us we either need to cram our install time in larger chunks of practice, or take it slow in prep for the long haul. That's tough for my players to not know what to expect."

It's definitely a day-by-day, wait and see approach this year that is for sure.

Things do appear as if they are going to start on time though so that is a very good sign.

I look for Stanton to be improved from last year and have a good season.

The Mustangs have dropped down to Class D-1, which really only affects them come Sub-District Time.

The schedule remains pretty much the same as if Stanton was in C-2.

I will say one thing though I think the tough schedule will allow the Mustangs to be prepared come Sub-District Time.

Having Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family and Howells-Dodge in the same Sub-District certainly provides a tall task though.

Season Outlook:

The Stanton Boys, like everyone else across the State, will have to play in front of 25% capacity gyms and immediate household family members this year.

Coach Beebe shares his thoughts on the whole thing. "I think the online streaming options available are a good adjustment to how the season for spectators looks. As for the players, it can be more intimidating not being able to lose a parent's voice in the crowd and hearing them clear as day with the gym being sparse. Our players will have to be able to make their own excitement on the bench and have sharp enough focus to keep their senses on the game at hand."

The Mustangs will definitely have to adjust and adapt that's for sure. The thing of it is though is that everyone else is in the same boat as them so there should be no advantage or disadvantage to the whole thing.

Coach Beebe says the team is ready to get things started. "I'm very excited with this being my first year as head coach. We've established a great atmosphere on the team thus far and the kids missed being in the gym more than anything since summertime. We're all ready here in Stanton to make our mark in the gyms of our conference this year. We play basketball today, we play basketball tomorrow, we are family always-- always."

I can tell you one thing.... I don't think Stanton or anyone else for that matter is going to take any game or practice for granted this year.

And that honestly should bring out the best in the Mustangs.

I fully expect Stanton to compete at a very high level this year and play extra hard due to this whole pandemic.

I'm just hoping the whole season gets played and there's no disruptions or alterations to things whatsoever.

Stanton is in Sub-District D1-3 with Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, Howells-Dodge, and Cedar Bluffs.

Team: Stanton

Mascot: Mustangs

Colors: Orange and Black

Class: C-2

Conference: East Husker

Head Coach: Greg Wegner (6th season) (81-46 record)

2019-2020 record: 6-18 (lost to Clarkson/Leigh in Sub-Districts)

Returning Starters: 3

Overview:

The Stanton Girls are looking for improvement this year under 6th year Head Coach Greg Wegner after going 6-18 a year ago.

The Mustangs bring back 3 starters in Sylvia Cunningham (6'0, JR P), Savannah Siebrandt (5'7, JR G), and Kinley Pohlman (5'8, JR G). Other returning letterwinners include Guard Bridgett Jensen and Post Ellie Locke.

Newcomers likely to contribute include Olivia Cunningham (5'10), Arynn Spence (5'10), Madison Wragge (5'4), and Zoe Wiedeman (5'7).

I think Stanton has some good size, speed, and athleticism.

Coach Wegner says the team looks to be stronger than they were a year ago. "We are looking to be much more competitive than last year. We are looking for more scoring from our older classes, as last year we relied upon our underclassmen to carry the load for the team. I expect more confidence and production from this year's squad. It will be interesting, however, since the summer was cut from the program this year due to COVID-19."

Not having a normal summer hurts no doubt, but a lot of other teams are in the same boat.

Coach Wegner says it has been a year unlike any other. "Things are much different this year. We had our summer schedule cut from the program, and now we have to take precautions to reduce our chances of affecting our team with the virus. As far as practices are going, it is not that big of an adjustment, since the kids and coaches are used to wearing masks at school all day. It will be interesting to see what happens with the season or what kind of season it will be. I think we are extremely lucky to get fall sports in, I hope we can still get at least part of a season."

It does appear as if things will be starting on time so that is a good sign.

Hopefully we get through Winter Sports and have a full season and there are no cancellations or postponements of any kind due to COVID-19 whatsoever.

That might not be possible though, and if it's not hopefully those types of things can be kept to a minimum.

Season Outlook:

The Stanton Girls, like everyone else in the State of Nebraska, will have to play in front of 25% capacity gyms and just immediate household family members this year.

Coach Wegner says he doesn't think this will have a negative impact on his team. "I really don't think it will be that different. Unless it is a big rivalry game, the stands are not packed full of fans at the C2 level. The kids want to play and compete, they don't care much about who is in the stands. I am sure some of the kids will be less nervous with just their parent in the stand and not as many onlookers."

I would agree with that last statement from Coach Wegner.

There should be less pressure and things of that nature I would think.

Coach Wegner adds he's ready for the team to show how much they've improved. "I am very excited for the year. I want to see how much my young team has grown over the past year. We didn't have a season we wanted last year, but we were relying on a lot of young players to carry the heavy load for the team. Their inexperience showed, but now with a solid year of experience, I want to see what they can do. We have great kids here that are good teammates, I just want to see them have more success and for their hard work and dedication to each other to pay off."

I look for the Mustangs to have a better season than last year, and have a nice bounce back year if you may.

I think Stanton will be strong defensively once again, and feel their offense will be improved.

I think it's important for the Mustangs to do well in and win the close games.

Stanton's ability to come through in big moments and play up to their potential this year figure to tell the tale of the tape on how the season goes if you will.

The Mustangs are in Sub-District C2-6 with Clarkson/Leigh, Norfolk Catholic, Lutheran High Northeast, and Madison.

I look for Stanton to be competitive within that Sub-District when the time comes.
