North Bend Central Boys and Girls look to reload

Team: North Bend Central

Mascot: Tigers

Colors: Orange and Black

Class: C-1

Conference: East Husker

Head Coach: Jon Baehr (8th season) (153-149 career record)

2019-2020 record: 23-3 (lost to St. Paul in Sub-State Final)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

It was an abrupt end to the season last year for the North Bend Central Boys as the Tigers dropped their final two games of the season, losing to David City Aquinas in the Sub-District Final, and falling to St. Paul at Sub-State.

The Tigers will try and make amends this year, and back for 8th year Head Coach Jon Baehr are Breckin Peters (6'2, 200 SR), Austin Taylor (6'1, SR SG), Jaxon Wietfeld (6'4, SR PG/SG 182), and Brodey Johnson (6'1, JR SG/PG 185).

North Bend Central figures to be pretty strong this year with a good core nucleus of Juniors and Seniors.

Coach Baehr says the Coronavirus Pandemic has really altered and changed things for everyone. "Well like everyone I think there has been a great deal of change in regards to our process to get in the gym. It has changed our routines for just about everything, but that is part of the deal. This summer we were able to attend a few camps and a few summer league weeks. That allowed us to play a bit as a group this summer. As we approach this season I think the hard part is keeping kids attention and keeping them motivated when there is so much uncertainty going on around them. I think that it is hard for kids to never know what may be coming, so as we hit practice we just keep working to share with them the things they need to do to stay healthy and in school and push forward with things we can control."

The Tigers need good strong practices and can't let the pandemic affect their focus and effort if that can be done.

Season Outlook:

The North Bend Central Boys will have to deal with reduced capacity at games this year, as will every other team across the state.

Coach Baehr says he's not concerned about that affecting his team. "I don't think it matters to be honest. I mean it is great to have the passion and excitement for games for kids, but if we get to play, we could play on the moon as far as I am concerned. We will worry about creating our own energy and playing for the love of playing the game and being a team."

It's hard saying what this season is going to look like exactly, but hopefully the kids, and in particular the Seniors, get to play some sort of a season.

Coach Baehr adds there's a lot of potential in this year's group and they just want to play. "I think our kids are really excited to get to be together and to start working on things and get going with something normal. I think the hardest part for most kids is just nothing is normal, and being part of a team and being around people in a safe environment is something they need and want. I think we have the ability to be a very solid team and grow into a special team as the year goes on."

The Tigers are in Sub-District C1-5 with Wahoo, Bishop Neumann, David City Aquinas, and David City.

Lots of challenges potentially lie ahead for North Bend Central, but I have no doubt that the Tigers will be geared and ready to meet each and every one of those challenges if and when they do in fact face them.

Here's to hoping there is as much basketball as possible this year.

Team: North Bend Central

Mascot: Tigers

Colors: Orange and Black

Class: C-1

Conference: East Husker

Head Coach: Aaron Sterup (19th season) (318-101 career record)

2019-2020 record: 27-2 (Won State)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The North Bend Central Girls return the majority of last year's team that won the Class C-1 State Championship.

Back for Head Coach Aaron Sterup is Sydney Emanuel (5'7, JR G), Cierra Kluthe (5'10, SR F), Kaitlyn Emanuel (5'10, SO F), Hannah Williams (5'6, SR G), Ally Pojar (5'9, SR F), and Madelyn Gaughen (5'8, JR F).

Coach Sterup says his squad will be very competitive again, I completely agree with that. I feel the Tigers will be very good once again this season.

Of course the Coronavirus Pandemic has thrown everything for a loop so we don't know exactly what we are going to get this season.

Coach Sterup says the team wasn't able to do a whole lot in the offseason. "Our summer was pretty limited. We didn’t do nearly as much as we normally would, so we are probably a little behind compared to normal, but in reality, I’m not sure it should be that big of a deal."

I'm sure the Tigers will be ready to go this season regardless of how much they've been able to do.

It figures to be another great year for North Bend Central as long as the season gets played.

Season Outlook:

The North Bend Central Girls figure to be very hungry for another State Championship and another State Run this year.

If they are to do that though it may just be with household members only and 25% capacity as is what is currently mandated. Coach Sterup says it will be different, but they'll adjust. "I am sure the games will not be the same and will have a much different atmosphere. We are just looking forward to playing in any situation that we can."

The hope and bottomline is playing, but doing so in a safe manner. That is what matters most to these kids I am sure.

Coach Sterup says the team has a quiet confidence about the season. "We are very excited and cautiously optimistic that things will go on as planned. We really want to have at least part of a season with a conclusion."

Hopefully the season gets played, and hopefully the Tigers have another shot at some hardware come March.

North Bend Central is in Sub-District C1-5 with West Point-Beemer, Oakland-Craig, Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, and Arlington.

Another tough road ahead of the Tigers, but North Bend Central has been there and done that before and knows what to expect.

I expect nothing less than a big season from NBC, however and whatever that looks like.
