Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Boys start season 1-1; Girls begin 0-2
The Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Boys are off to a 1-1 start, downing Oakland-Craig 71-59 at home in the Thursday night's season opener before falling 39-36 at home to Twin River on Saturday.
Against Oakland-Craig, the Raiders jumped out to a 22-16 lead after one. Logan View/Scribner-Snyder won the second quarter 16-13 to hold a 38-29 halftime lead.
The Knights won the third quarter 14-13 to make it a 51-43 game at the end of three.
The Raiders outscored Oakland-Craig 20-16 in the fourth quarter to make up the final score.
Logan View/Scribner-Snyder's Ben Moxness had a game-high 32 points, while Jacob Polk and Andrew Poppe added 13 and 7, respectively.
Head Coach Sean Forbes says one area his team can work on is getting to the line.
"Well when we shoot a lot of threes I don't know how much we're going to get to the line, but as long as those threes are going in I guess we'll take them. But yeah we would like to get to the line a little more, but we're kind of a three-point shooting team."
The Titans led 15-13 at the end of one before winning the second quarter 10-8 to take a 25-21 lead into the locker room.
The Raiders outscored Twin River 13-7 in the third quarter to take a 34-32 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Titans put up 7 fourth quarter points and held LVSS to just 2.
Moxness led the way with 18 points while Polk totaled 10 points and 7 rebounds.
I thought the Raiders played pretty good and respectable basketball over the weekend. It was just a cold shooting night that cost Logan View/Scribner-Snyder against Twin River.
The Raiders (1-1) are at Wayne (2-0) Tuesday night.
The Blue Devils won 60-53 at Battle Creek Friday night.
Moxness and Polk have to show up and play the way they did this past weekend, but other players have to consistently step up and help them.
They got a little more help and had better games Thursday night than Saturday night, and I think a lot of that was simply due to inconsistency.
Logan View/Scribner-Snyder has to become consistent, especially with their scoring.
Winning close games often makes or breaks a team's season, and the Raiders are no exception.
A low scoring, grind it out type of game is not what Logan View/Scribner-Snyder wants. The Raiders want to get out and run, and shoot spot up threes.
This game with Wayne should be more up tempo and more to Logan View/Scribner-Snyder's liking.
Both these teams like shooting the 3 and can do it, which should make for a great game.
I have a feeling both teams will be on, and I think this is another game that could be decided by single digits.
Thus far, the Blue Devils have won the close games while the Raiders dropped their lone game in single digits, so that combined with the fact the game is in Wayne, one would probably have to give the advantage to Wayne.
Logan View/Scribner-Snyder is definitely capable of winning though. I feel like the Raiders have what it takes to get the job done and pick up the big W.
Logan View/Scribner-Snyder just has to finish this time around, something they didn't do against Twin River.
One off shooting quarter really hurt the Raiders against the Titans, and it just goes to show that one quarter can ultimately decide a game.
That's why it's important for Logan View/Scribner-Snyder to play a complete four quarter game. The Raiders have to knock down their open shots and get to the free throw line as much as possible.
The Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Girls opened the regular season schedule with a 68-43 loss to Oakland-Craig at home Thursday night.
The Raiders were able to cut the Oakland-Craig lead to 6, late in the third quarter but were unable to fight all the way back.
Mackenzy Schreck led the scoring for LVSS with 12 points, Abby Kahlandt was also in double figures with 10. Other stats include Ashley Peters-6 points, Breanna Smith- 5 points, 5 rebounds, Sierra Beacom-5 points, Ashley Uhing-3 points, 6 rebounds.
To wrap up a busy week, the LVSS girls basketball team ran into a tough Twin River team and fell by a final of 65-24 on Saturday.
The Raiders used a hot shooting first quarter to keep the game close, but eventually ran out of steam on offense.
Kaylee Boyle was the leading scorer with 15 points. Other stats include Peters-3 points, Kahlandt-3 points, 2 blocked shots, Schreck-2 points, and Beacom-1 point.
I feel like Logan View/Scribner-Snyder did some good things this past week, getting some girls in double figures and such. The Raiders just need to work on getting all these girls to score a lot of points at once and slowing down their opponents to be successful, in my opinion.
Logan View/Scribner-Snyder (0-2) travels to Wayne (1-1) Tuesday night to battle the Blue Devils.
Wayne knocked off Battle Creek 62-50 on the road Friday night.
The Blue Devils were blown out by South Sioux City the night before, and have a new coach, so I don't think winning is out of the realm of possibility for the Raiders Tuesday night.
Logan View/Scribner-Snyder just has to be more effective and efficient on offense, and has to be much better defensively.
The Raiders have to pressure the ball, create turnovers, and get easy baskets in transition.
Logan View/Scribner-Snyder's guards have to be able to handle pressure and break the press.
The Raiders have to limit turnovers against Wayne, especially with the game being at their place.
I think it's also important for Logan View/Scribner-Snyder to play well early.
The Raiders need to build a lead, or at the very least stick with Wayne early on to give themselves the confidence necessary to knock off the Blue Devils.
If Logan View/Scribner-Snyder falls down something like 10-2 within the first 2-3 minutes of the game, it could be an uphill battle battling back.
The biggest and most important thing for the Raiders though is continuing to improve.
Logan View/Scribner-Snyder has to continue to grow and get better as the season progresses, and I think it's really important for the Raiders to take some steps forward Tuesday night, win or lose.
These girls have to have confidence in themselves and each other, and must be ready to play their hardest for four quarters.
Logan View/Scribner-Snyder has to give it their all, and play until the final whistle blows.
The Raiders obviously want to be in the game throughout, but Logan View/Scribner-Snyder has to focus on playing good team ball the whole way regardless of the score.
The Raiders have to have situational and clock awareness to be successful, in my opinion.
