North Bend Central Boys 2-0 to start year; Girls 2-1
The North Bend Central Boys are 2-0 so far this year, downing Twin River 68-48 at home Thursday night and David City 69-27 on the road Saturday.
The Titans led the Tigers 17-12 after one. North Bend Central outscored Twin River 22-8 in the second quarter to go up 34-25 at halftime.
The Tigers won the third quarter 19-8 to lead 53-33 at the end of three.
Both teams scored 15 points in the fourth quarter.
Tanner Wietfeld led the way with 25 points while Tanner Wietfeld and Matt Ortmeier notched 15 and 12, respectively.
Head Coach Jon Baehr says aggressive play on both ends of the floor paid off.
"I feel that Twin River is a really well coached team as they are always prepared and ready to go so I was very happy with how we were able to attack them throughout the game. I felt the big difference in the game was we were able to push the ball pretty hard on offense, and on defense we were able to apply enough pressure to get the game at a pace that better suited us I would say."
Baehr adds having multiple players who can score the ball helps.
"I think this year we really have a group that can score the ball in many different ways. Jake Wietfeld is back from a season ago where he was our leading scorer, Tanner Wietfeld is really picking up confidence and his shot has improved due to his hard work during the summer on his shot and his game, and Matt Ortmeier is the third of what I would call a very strong trio of scorers. Those three guys all hit double figures but our next three main options to score are also very good options for us in John Emanuel, James Seymour, and Austin Endorf. Having a host of guys that can put the ball in the hoop is really important to being successful throughout the year."
North Bend Central (2-0) hosts West Point-Beemer (2-1) Thursday night.
The Cadets topped Stanton 51-41 on the road Tuesday night.
Baehr says West Point-Beemer is a tough team his squad has to be ready for.
"West Point-Beemer is another very well coached team that will throw some different looks at us. They are long and pretty athletic and they do some nice things on both ends of the floor to make it difficult. They have some guys that can really shoot the ball from the outside and run a lot of different pick combinations so we will have to do a great job of communicating and working through those with proper technique and effort. Overall I feel that this will be a great game on Thursday and that for us we will need to come out very focused and ready to deal with multiple looks on defense. It will be important for us to play with good spacing and make sure we make good passes that don't get tipped all the time due to their length. On defense we will need to be physical and aggressive working through picks and combinations to be effective."
I would say the Cadets pose a very tough challenge to the Tigers, and I feel both teams are stronger this year than they were last year.
Baehr says his team will need to be focused on Thursday only.
"I think we have to remain focused on Thursday game and deal with what we need to get better. If we remain focused on one game at a time and respect and honor each and every opportunity we have to play together and to play for our community and school then momentum is never really a thing. It is really about valuing our chances to play. West Point-Beemer is a very good team so we will just need to focus on this chance first."
North Bend Central has three games next week, but the Tigers can worry about those games after they play the Cadets.
North Bend Central should only be worried about West Point-Beemer right now. No other game or team should be on their mind.
I think the Tigers have a great chance to win Thursday night.
It wouldn't surprise me if the Cadets won, but I think this North Bend Central team is the real deal.
I think both are quality teams, and that should make for a great game.
I look for the game to be decided by single digits with the team that executes the best and does better getting to and converting at the free throw line winning the game.
The game can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.
The North Bend Central Girls are 2-1 on the young season, losing 43-38 at home to Twin River Thursday night before winning 62-6 at David City on Saturday and 50-21 at Schuyler Tuesday night.
The Tigers led the Titans 10-8 after one. Both teams scored 11 points in the second quarter, and the halftime score was 21-19 in favor of North Bend Central.
Twin River won the third quarter 11-8, and led 30-29 at the end of three.
The Titans outscored the Tigers 13-9 in the fourth quarter.
North Bend Central held a 13-2 lead over the Warriors after one. The Tigers won the second quarter 13-5 to take a 26-7 lead into the locker room.
North Bend Central outscored Schuyler 13-3 in the third quarter to go up 39-10 after three.
Both teams scored 11 points in the fourth quarter.
I thought the Tigers did a good job responding following the loss to Twin River. I feel like North Bend Central kind of let one get away against the Titans.
The Tigers (2-1) host West Point-Beemer (1-2) Thursday night.
The Cadets lost 40-29 at Stanton Tuesday night.
West Point-Beemer has been very up and down this year and has gone through some struggles.
The Cadets scored well their first two games of the year, but defense was a bit of a struggle, at least against Omaha Roncalli.
It was the other way around Tuesday night as West Point-Beemer's defense was on, but their offense wasn't clicking.
I think the Mustangs are similar to North Bend Central in that they are strong defensively.
I look for the Tigers' defense to be strong, but it will be interesting to see how their offense does.
I think North Bend Central has a good chance to win, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Cadets stole one Thursday night.
The Tigers simply have to play at a high level offensively and defensively, and try and slow down and limit Bethany Anderson.
Anderson may get her points, but if North Bend Central can force someone else to beat them, they should be in good shape.
The Cadets may be young and inexperienced, but they are still a quality team. The Tigers are going to have to play four good quarters of basketball to top West Point-Beemer, in my opinion.
North Bend Central has to play a complete game, and turn in one of their better performances of the season.
The Tigers have to convert easy lay ups and free throws.
Wide open shots close to the basket should go in.
North Bend Central has to be aggressive on offense and defense, and have confidence that the ball is going to go in the hole, and believe they can slow down the Cadets' offense.
I think the Tigers are really going to need to be clicking on all cylinders to solidify a win Thursday night.
The game can be heard on 107.9 the Bull starting at 6:15 p.m.
