Pender Boys and Girls aiming for big seasons

Team: Pender

Mascot: Pendragons

Colors: Red and White

Class: D-1

Conference: East Husker

Head Coach: Sean King (2nd season)

2015-2016 record: 3-20  (lost to Randolph in Sub-Districts)

Returning Starters: 5

Overview:

The Pender Boys hope and figure to be much improved this season with the return of all five starters.

Dylan Roth - 6’2” - Sr. - G/F - 2 years, Jared Tyrrell - 5’7” - Jr. - G - 1 year, Tyler Nelson - 5’10” - Jr. G - 2 years, James Bensen - 5’10” - Jr. - F - 1 year,  and Sam Mailloux - 6’4” - So. - F - 1 year are the returning starters that 2nd year Head Coach Sean King says is his projected starting lineup.

The Pendragons did lose some key players though, and they are Broderick Brader, Evan Glissman, and Cole Hofmeister.

King says there are four newcomers who could make an impact, and they are:

Chris Rutar - 5’10” - So. - G
Eric Schopke - 6’1” - So. - G
Jacob Bensen - 6’2” - Jr. - F
Jaydon Jump - 5’10” - So. - F

King adds he and the team are thinking they will be much better this year than last.

"This team has great potential. The sky is the limit for some of them and we all believe that we can drastically improve from where we finished last season."

I thought Pender was going to have a better season last year than they did given how the team did in football last fall and in baseball that previous summer.

Perhaps I thought too soon that this program was going to do extraordinary things.

I do think the Pendragons have a shot to win quite a few more games than they did last year though given all the talent and experience they bring back.

I think the biggest thing for Pender is to compete. The Pendragons were blown out way too much a season ago, and to me it all starts on the defensive end for Pender.

The Pendragons need to be effective and efficient offensively as well, but defense wins championships, and that's why Pender has to make a commitment to excellent play on that end of the floor in particular.

Season Outlook:

There's reason for optimism and excitement around the Pender Boys Basketball program.

King says his boys are ready to go.

"Our boys are very excited about this season. They understand that they have a lot of experience back from previous years and that we have already greatly improved from last season. The boys understand how good they can be and are working hard to improve on a daily basis."

King adds there are a few things he expects out of his team this year, one thing being good rebounding.

"Aggressive, high pressure defense. Efficient offense. Strong rebounding."

The Pendragons figure to have a good chance to win more games this year than last.

King says keys to doing so include being smart and forcing other teams into mistakes.

"Taking good shots, picking up our defensive pressure, outrebounding our opponents, and forcing other teams into turnovers."

King adds he can't wait to see his team have success.

"I am most looking forward to the success the boys will have and how they handle it. They can be great this year. I am looking forward to where they can take this team."

There are a lot of winnable games early on for Pender with tough early season contests against Stanton and North Bend Central.

Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, Wynot, Howells-Dodge, and BRLD appear to be tough games in the second half of the season.

There are a lot of winnable games on the schedule for the Pendragons. It's just simply a matter of going out there and competing at a high level and getting the job done.

Pender is in Sub-District D1-4 with GACC, Walthill, Emerson-Hubbard, and Clarkson/Leigh.

The Pendragons open up the season on Thursday at home against Wakefield.

Overview:

The Pender Girls figure to be real good this year given everyone who returns.

I believe the Pendragons lost just one senior in Justice Sorenson.

Here is their roster, according to MaxPreps:

Krusemark, Wegner, Jacobsen, English, Lehmkuhl, Anderson, and Ballinger are the main players I look for to do big things.

This is Pender's year. The Pendragons have a lot of talent....enough talent that they can definitely get to Lincoln.

It's going to take a lot of hard work on Pender's part, but there's no doubt the Pendragons can achieve great things this year if they play up to their potential and come together at the right time.

Season Outlook:

The Pender Girls have to be thinking state this year.

The Pendragons have GACC in their sub-district though so Pender has to do well throughout the course of the regular season to obtain a wildcard to state should they need it.

The Pendragons have difficult regular season contests against Tekamah-Herman, Oakland-Craig, North Bend Central, Stanton, BRLD, Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, Wisner-Pilger, Wynot, Howells-Dodge, Emerson-Hubbard, and Guardian Angels Central Catholic.

I think the game against the Bluejays at the end of the regular season helps Pender. The Pendragons will have a better chance of knocking off GACC if they play twice as opposed to if they just met in the postseason.

Pender is in Sub-District D1-4 with Walthill, Emerson-Hubbard, Clarkson/Leigh, and GACC.

The Pendragons open up the season at home on Thursday against Wakefield.
