West Point-Beemer Boys and Girls beat Arlington. lose to Omaha Roncalli

The West Point-Beemer Boys won 44-37 at Arlington Thursday night before losing 45-36 at home to Omaha Roncalli on Saturday.

The Cadets led the Eagles 11-7 after one and won the second quarter 9-8 to lead 20-15 at halftime.

West Point-Beemer outscored Arlington 11-10 in the third quarter to go up 31-25 at the end of three.

The Cadets put up 13 fourth quarter points compared to 12 for the Eagles.

Austin Streeter had a team-high 13 points while Blake Anderson totaled 10 points and 7 rebounds. Chase Streeter contributed 8 points and 8 rebounds.

The Crimson Pride led West Point-Beemer 12-9 after one. The Cadets won the second quarter 10-7 to make it a 19-19 game at the half.

Omaha Roncalli tripled up West Point-Beemer 12-4 in the third quarter to make it a 31-23 game at the end of three.

The Crimson Pride notched 14 points in the fourth quarter compared to 13 for the Cadets.

Anderson had 8 points while Hunter Pilakowski notched 7.

I thought West Point-Beemer played good, strong defense over the weekend. I just feel there's some room for improvement from an offensive standpoint.

The Cadets (1-1) take on Stanton (1-1) on the road Tuesday night.

The Mustangs lost 58-43 at Howells-Dodge Friday night.

Stanton has been a bit up and down so far this season, kind of like West Point-Beemer.

This should be a good, close contest between two teams that I would say are kind of looking to find themselves.

The Cadets could definitely use a win with North Bend Central coming up on Thursday.

Things don't get any easier from here on out for West Point-Beemer, and that's why this game is big for the Cadets.

I would say this game is bigger for West Point-Beemer than it is Stanton.

The Mustangs have a matchup with rival Wisner-Pilger on Thursday, and need all the momentum heading into that one, but I would say North Bend Central is a stronger team than Wisner-Pilger at this point so I feel like the Cadets need the win more.

I don't think there's any doubt West Point-Beemer will be strong defensively, but can they score?

Howells-Dodge found a winning formula so that's something the Cadets are probably feeling they can do too.

I think the first team to 50 Tuesday night could definitely be the winner.

If West Point-Beemer loses this game it will most likely be due to a lack of offense.

It's tough going on the road and winning any game, but taking on a Stanton team that's coming off a tough road loss is going to be that much more challenging, in my opinion.

The Cadets have to play strong defense, grind things out, and not turn the ball over.

If this is a game in the 30's or 40's I like West Point-Beemer's chances. If it's a game in the 50's though then I would give the slight advantage to the Mustangs.

I think it just comes down to the Cadets being confident shooting the ball. West Point-Beemer should have it in their minds that every shot they take is going in.

The West Point-Beemer Girls are off to a 1-1 start themselves, downing Arlington 54-23 on the road in the season opener Thursday night before losing 54-49 at home to Omaha Roncalli on Saturday.

The Cadets led the Eagles 12-5 after one. West Point-Beemer won the second quarter 5-3 to take a 17-8 lead into the locker room.

The Cadets outscored Arlington 21-10 in the third quarter to make it a 38-18 game at the end of three.

West Point-Beemer totaled 16 fourth quarter points and held the Eagles to 5.

Bethany Anderson posted a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds while Abbey Dale had 10 points. Katie Pilakowski and Andrea Hoffman registered 7 points apiece.

The Crimson Pride outscored the Cadets 26-20 in the first half to lead by that score at the break.

Omaha Roncalli won the third quarter 19-12 to go up 45-32 after three.

West Point-Beemer outscored the Crimson Pride 17-9 in the fourth quarter.

Anderson recorded another double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds while Brittney Hinkel added 11 points.

Head Coach Craig Theis says Roncalli's defense proved to be too much.

"That pressure just really bothered us. And they kept pushing our offense out to half court. And then we'd make that long pass. And we really pride ourselves on executing in the half court, and we just didn't execute at all. I mean sometimes it looked like we're just kind of running around with our head cut off out there."

The Cadets (1-1) square off with Stanton (1-1) on the road Tuesday night.

The Mustangs lost 34-25 at Howells-Dodge Friday night.

Theis says the Cadets need to improve their free throw shooting.

"They (Roncalli) make five in a row, and then we miss six in a row. And we shoot them. In fact before the girls get a varsity uniform they have to make 10 free throws in a row before that first game. And we've got girls put a lot of work in, but these girls got to rise to the occasion there and step up and knock them down, and I know they will."

Theis says the team also needs more defense.

"We thought defense would be a strength this year, and we thought scoring would be difficult. The first two games we put up 50 points, but we've given few too many points up. They shot pretty well there in that second half, but had some pretty easy looks there."

I'm surprised by West Point-Beemer's defensive struggles. I figured defense would be the strongest part of the Cadets' game, but so far the offense has been better, surprisingly.

Anderson is having a great individual season so far, but players like Makenna Weddle have to step up and score.

She's been held to 6 points in 2 games so far, and has to be more of a leader and a scoring threat for West Point-Beemer to get going, in my opinion.

I think this game against Stanton will come down to defense.

The team with the stronger defensive performance will win, in my opinion.

The Mustangs did a really good job to hold Howells-Dodge to 34 points, and you can bet Stanton's girls will be ball hawks defensively Tuesday night.

The Cadets have some tough games coming up before Christmas, but there's no reason why West Point-Beemer can't compete and win every one of them.

The Cadets just have to figure things out defensively and play a complete four quarter game on Tuesday, both of which West Point-Beemer is capable of doing.

It should be a great game and a great chess match between Theis and Stanton Head Coach Greg Wegner.
