GACC Boys 1-2 in last 3 games; Girls 3-2 in last five

The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Boys Basketball Team is 1-2 in their last 3 games, falling 74-43 at Columbus Scotus last Tuesday night, losing 62-46 at Wynot last Thursday night, and then rallying to beat Crofton 52-51 at home on Saturday.

Scotus scored at least 20 points in three of the four quarters and made 10 three pointers on their way to the win over Central Catholic.

Derek Petz scored 12 points for the Bluejays, all from three point range, and Jared Minnick added 11.

The Blue Devils went up 16-10 at the end of one. Wynot outscored GACC 18-7 in the 2nd quarter to take a 34-17 lead into the locker room.

The Blue Devils won the 3rd quarter 11-10 to go up 48-27 at the end of three.

The Bluejays put up 19 points in the 4th quarter compared to 17 for Wynot.

GACC led the Warriors 11-8 at the end of one. Crofton won the 2nd quarter 16-13 to tie the game at 24 at halftime.

The Warriors outscored the Bluejays 14-9 in the 3rd quarter to go up 38-33 at the end of three.

GACC put up 19 points in the 4th quarter compared to 13 for Crofton.

The Bluejays showed a lot of heart by coming back and beating the Warriors the way they did, in my opinion.

GACC (2-3) takes on Oakland-Craig (3-4) on the road Tuesday night.

The Knights lost 54-43 at Wisner-Pilger Thursday night, and fell 76-36 at home to Winnebago Tuesday night.

This figures to be an interesting game.

Both teams have had their struggles and bright spots this year, and both could really use a win.

Petz and Minnick have to have big games for the Bluejays, and GACC must do a good job of slowing down the Knights' offense.

Oakland-Craig has a lot of weapons, including Garrett Seagren, Kobe Benne, Wyatt Seagren, Jared Mulder, Garrison Dodge, Robby Mayberry, and others.

The Bluejays have to play the way they did at the end of the Crofton game the whole time against the Knights.

GACC will have had 10 days to prepare for Oakland-Craig so the Bluejays should be fresh and ready to go.

Scoring and being confident offensively will be important for GACC, in my opinion, as will playing good defense by contesting shots, getting back in transition, and boxing out and rebounding well.

The Bluejays have to come out and play with a sense of pride and purpose Tuesday night.

GACC has to really get after things on both ends of the floor, and play their hearts out.

This is the Bluejays' last game before the David City Aquinas game next Friday.

GACC has two tough games next week, but I feel the Bluejays can compete well in both of them.

I could see GACC winning both games, splitting, or losing both.

I think the Bluejays have the potential to play and do very well, but feel GACC could also struggle as well.

The Bluejays are young, but if they can become more consistent, their confidence should grow quite a bit.

The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Girls Basketball Team is 3-2 in their last five games, losing 64-39 at Columbus Scotus last Tuesday night, beating Wynot 42-33 on the road last Thursday night, falling 61-49 at home to Crofton on Saturday, downing Fremont Bergan 57-51 on the road Tuesday night, and defeating Winnebago 80-42 at home Thursday night.

Scotus raced to a 33-18 halftime lead, and went on to beat Central Catholic.

Lexis Haase led the Bluejays with 18 points while Maddie Bracht added 8.

GACC led the Blue Devils 17-6 after one. Wynot won the 2nd quarter 8-6 to make it a 23-14 game at halftime.

The Blue Devils outscored the Bluejays 13-10 in the 3rd quarter to get within 6 at 33-27 at the end of three.

GACC put up 9 4th quarter points and held Wynot to 6.

Haase led the way with 15 points and 7 steals while Brandi Doernemann totaled 11 points. Brenna Rief added 8.

The Warriors led the Bluejays 20-8 at the end of one. Crofton won the 2nd quarter 12-11 to take a 32-19 lead into the locker room.

GACC outscored the Warriors 15-13 in the 3rd quarter to make it a 45-34 game at the end of three.

Crofton notched 16 points in the 4th quarter compared to 15 for the Bluejays.

Haase paced GACC with 22 points while Doernemann and Marissa Hunke registered 8 apiece.

The Bluejays led the Knights 14-11 after one, and outscored Bergan 21-10 in the 2nd quarter to take a 35-21 lead into the locker room.

Bergan won the 3rd quarter 18-15 to make it a 50-39 game at the end of three.

The Knights put up 12 points in the 4th quarter compared to 7 for GACC.

Haase had a team-high 14 points and 9 rebounds while Doernemann registered 11. Bracht and Angela Jansen chipped in 10 apiece while Rief totaled 8.

The Bluejays jumped on the Indians 27-15 after one. GACC won the 2nd quarter 14-11 to take a 41-26 lead into the locker room.

The Bluejays outscored Winnebago 16-12 in the 3rd quarter to go up 57-38 at the end of three.

GACC put up 23 points in the 4th quarter and held the Indians to 4.

Bracht paced the Bluejays with 22 points while Jansen registered 14. Ally Plagge added 10 while Haase and Hunke recorded 9 each. Hanna Knobbe tallied 9 while Avery Kreikemeier posted 7. Doernemann chipped in 7 rebounds.

GACC caught their groove this week, and I think it started after the Scotus game last week. Lots of girls have scored a lot in the last two games for the Bluejays, a very good sign.

GACC (5-2) hosts Norfolk Catholic (2-4) on Saturday.

The Knights won 46-41 at Lutheran High Northeast Tuesday night.

Norfolk Catholic is a better team than their record indicates, in my opinion.

The Knights' losses are to Omaha Gross, Grand Island Central Catholic, Bishop Neumann, and Hartington Cedar Catholic.

I think the Bluejays can definitely win given how they've played lately, but it's going to be a tremendous challenge for GACC.

Haase has to have a big game as do everyone else who got in the scoring column against Winnebago.

I thought the game with the Indians was the Bluejays' most complete game of the season.

Winnebago is a much improved team, but GACC made it look easy.

Watching the Bluejays on Saturday it appeared Haase was basically the entire team.

Not so much the case now given GACC's scoring the last couple of games.

I feel the Bluejays have figured quite a few things out offensively, and has gotten a bunch of different girls on track offensively.

I don't know what GACC has done, but whatever the Bluejays are doing right now is working.

GACC has to continue to use it and keep playing well and at a high level.

Doernemann has to keep controlling things in the paint, and must continue to be a force down low for the Bluejays.

Haase has to continue to hit from the outside, and GACC has to get to the free throw line a lot as a team.

The Bluejays are coming along nicely, but have this challenging game with the Knights on Saturday and Wayne on Monday.

GACC has to keep playing well, and must keep their eye on the prize.
