Winnebago Boys and Girls down Omaha Nation
The Winnebago Boys Basketball team drilled Omaha Nation 95-46 on the road Thursday night.
The Indians led 31-11 after one, and outscored the Chiefs 36-12 in the 2nd quarter to take a 57-23 lead into the locker room.
Winnebago won the 3rd quarter 15-7 to go up 72-30 after three.
Omaha Nation put up 16 points in the 4th quarter compared to 13 for the Indians.
Great game by Winnebago. The Indians have simply continued their dominance.
Oakland-Craig and Winnebago meet in High School Basketball Action on 107.9 the Bull Tuesday night.
The Boys game features the 3-0 Indians and the 3-2 Knights. The Indians have scored over 80 points in all of their games this season, hitting 90+ twice. Oakland-Craig Head Coach Aaron Meyer says the Indians are as good as advertised. "Well they are very athletic, and they just know how to play the game. Quick shooters, they know how to slash. They have a lot of momentum right now. We've got to play well on both ends of the court. Got to be able to handle the basketball cause they're going to be flying all over the place. We've got to be able to withstand some runs, which we did that against Boys Town. We've got to somehow be able to defend the penetration and the wide open 3 at the same time. And then that can be really tough to do, but we've got to figure out a way."
The Knights have won their last 3 after dropping their first two games of the season.
Winnebago Head Coach Jeff Berridge says his squad hopes to continue their run of success against Oakland-Craig. "It should be a fun game. Past couple years we've had the upper hand on them so looking keep it the same and just keep playing Winnebago Basketball, and just have fun with it, and go out and put on a good show."
The Indians beat the Knights 90-69 in Winnebago last year, and 91-48 in Oakland the year before.
This figures to be a very interesting game.
The Knights have found a way their last three contests, but suffered losses to a pair of really good teams in Logan View/Scribner-Snyder and Boys Town to start the season.
Winnebago has to look to push and get out in transition as much as possible.
Dribble penetrating and kicking the ball out to the guards is a big part of the Indians' game, and Winnebago has to be relentless with their attack Tuesday night.
The defense also has to be aggressive, going after steals and ball hawking the ball.
Lance Denney, Manape Cleveland, Makoonce Littlevoice, D'Von LaPointe, Maurice Scott, and others need to have big games for the Blue and White.
The Indians will no doubt look to win this game the way they beat Homer and Omaha Nation, which is also about how much they beat Oakland-Craig by in each of the last two years.
Winnebago has a tough challenge on their hands I think, but there's no doubt this Indians's squad is capable of going out there and rolling and putting on a show.
Tuesday night's game can be heard on 107.9 the Bull after the Girls Game.
The Winnebago Girls Basketball Team lost 52-37 at Omaha Nation Thursday night.
The Chiefs led 12-10 after the 1st quarter before the Indians doubled up Omaha Nation 12-6 in the 2nd quarter to go up 22-18 at halftime.
The Chiefs won the 3rd quarter 13-9 to tie the game at 31 at the end of three.
Omaha Nation outscored Winnebago 21-6 in the 4th quarter.
Kae Earth had 10 points and 12 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Jayla Price added 10 points and 9 rebounds while Charli Earth had 9 points and 10 rebounds.
Tough 4th quarter for the Indians as Winnebago couldn't buy a basket, according to Head Coach Doug Mackling.
3-2 Oakland-Craig hosts 2-1 Winnebago in High School Basketball on 107.9 the Bull Tuesday night.
The Knights lost 56-43 at home to Howells-Dodge on Saturday.
The Indians have scored 60+ points in their two wins. Oakland-Craig Head Coach Joe Anderson says slowing down Winnebago's offense and playing well offensively is going to be critical. "One thing they're going to do they're going to put the ball in the basket. They find a way to score. We got to make sure we can match that, and play defensively. Don't give them any open shots. Cause if you give them open shots they're going to hit them. So we got to make sure we contest and pressure them on the defensive end. And then offensively we've got to make sure we convert. We struggle shooting the ball at times, and we can't have one of those shooting nights cause we're going to have to keep up with their scoring."
Winnebago Head Coach Doug Mackling says his squad will have to deal with Oakland-Craig's speed. "They seem quick, they're fast. Not too terribly tall. So I think I'm going to go with a smaller lineup. Trying to matchup with them. And I'm going to tell my girls that they got to run the court. These Oakland girls look like they're fast, and want to run, and get out in front and go. And I want to matchup with them. I'm working on transition D this week, and getting my girls back and getting them ready to setup the defense."
The Knights won last year's game 78-39 in Winnebago.
This should be a good competitive game.
It's apparent that the Indians are a much stronger team this year than they were last year, and so far it's looking like Oakland-Craig isn't quite as strong without Dacey Nelson.
I think everything hinges on offense and scoring in this game.
If Winnebago can score over 50 and have a couple girls reach double figures I like their chances.
But if the Indians are held in check and only score in the 30's then I would have to give the advantage to the Knights.
The good news for Winnebago is that they are well rested whereas Oakland-Craig has played quite a few games lately.
It should be an interesting one, that's for sure. I'm really looking forward to bringing you the call of the game. Hope you can tune in.
Coverage of the girls game is scheduled to begin around 6:00 p.m. on 107.9 the Bull with the boys game to follow.
