Howells-Dodge Boys and Girls split games with Oakland-Craig and West Point-Beemer
The Howells-Dodge Boys Basketball Team lost 49-45 at Oakland-Craig on Saturday before downing West Point-Beemer 62-40 at home Tuesday night.
The Jaguars went up 8-3 on Oakland-Craig after one. The Knights outscored Howells-Dodge 14-9 in the 2nd quarter to tie the game at 17 at halftime.
Oakland-Craig won the 3rd quarter 18-16 to lead 35-33 at the end of three.
The Knights notched 14 points in the 4th quarter compared to 12 for the Jaguars.
Connor Blum had 19 points and 7 rebounds while Lane Hegemann totaled 7 points.
Head Coach Cole Fischer says his team played well defensively, but struggled on offense. "We had a cold shooting night and defended well enough to win. Sometimes that's how the game turns out."
Against the Cadets, the Jaguars leaped out to a 17-10 lead at the end of one. West Point-Beemer won the 2nd quarter 13-7 to make it a 24-23 game at halftime.
Howells-Dodge had a big 3rd quarter, outscoring the Cadets 18-4 in the frame to lead 42-27 at the end of three.
The Jaguars notched 20 points in the 4th quarter compared to 13 for West Point-Beemer.
Kade Hegemann had a game-high 17 points for Howells-Dodge while Lane Hegemann chipped in 14. Josh Brester had 9 while Blum registered 8. Dax VanLengen totaled 10 rebounds.
Fischer says his team's offense came alive in the 2nd half. "This is great conference win against a quality opponent. Our second half shooting was the best it has been all year."
Howells-Dodge (4-2) takes on BRLD (4-0) on the road Friday night.
The Wolverines beat Clarkson/Leigh 64-22 at home this past Friday night.
BRLD is a good team, but the Wolverines have yet to be tested yet.
The Jaguars have played the tougher schedule, which should make things very interesting.
It's hard to say how this one is going to go given the fact Howells-Dodge has been a bit up and down this year.
I think the Jaguars have a chance to give BRLD their first loss of the season if they play like they did against West Point-Beemer in the 2nd half.
I thought Howells-Dodge did well in that contest not only offensively, but defensively as well.
Both Hegemann's, Brester, and Blum really came alive for the Jaguars Tuesday night, and that's something the Jaguars are going to need again Friday night.
BRLD is a tough team to play, especially when they're at home, but there's no doubt this Howells-Dodge team is capable of going in there and picking up a win.
The battle down low should be big with Lane Hegemann going up against the Wolverines' post players.
BRLD is rather young while the Jaguars are more senior and veteran laden so I think often times that goes a long way in determining a winner.
I look for Howells-Dodge to be calm, cool, collected, poised, and confident heading into this one.
If there's a team that's going to knock off the Wolverines on the road it's the Jaguars.
Big opportunity for Howells-Dodge Friday night.
The Jaguars also have rival Clarkson/Leigh on Saturday so a couple of important games on the schedule for Howells-Dodge the rest of this week.
The Jaguars have to play with the same intensity level and attitude they played with in the 2nd half against the Cadets.
If Howells-Dodge plays like that they're going to be awfully difficult for anyone to beat, in my opinion.
I was really impressed with the Jaguars Tuesday night, and feel they have a chance to finish the week 3-0.
The Howells-Dodge Girls Basketball Team topped Oakland-Craig 56-43 on the road Saturday before losing 54-40 at home to West Point-Beemer Tuesday night.
Oakland-Craig led the Jaguars 13-10 after one. Howells-Dodge outscored the Knights 11-7 in the 2nd quarter to take a 21-20 lead into the locker room.
The game was won in the 3rd quarter as the Jaguars outscored Oakland-Craig 18-7 to go up 39-27 at the end of three.
Howells-Dodge put up 17 4th quarter points compared to 16 for the Knights.
Macey Kulhanek led the way with 17 points and 7 rebounds while Erin Prusa scored 11 points. Jessi Brester added 10 points and 13 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Cassie Pieper chipped in 8 points while Grace Dvorak registered 7 rebounds.
The Cadets led 17-8 after one. West Point-Beemer won the 2nd quarter 19-14 to take a 36-22 lead into the locker room.
The Jaguars doubled up the Cadets 14-7 in the 3rd quarter to make it a 43-36 game at the end of three.
West Point-Beemer outscored Howells-Dodge 11-4 in the 4th quarter.
Kulhanek led all scorers with 13 points while Prusa and Brester notched 9 apiece. Dvorak hauled in 8 rebounds.
I thought the Jaguars played a great second half against the Knights, but unfortunately Howells-Dodge was unable to sustain that same level of play against the Cadets.
The Jaguars (3-3) take on BRLD (3-1) on the road Friday night.
The Wolverines are coming off a 50-39 home win over Clarkson/Leigh this past Friday night.
That was a game in which BRLD had a big 4th quarter to win the game.
I think Howells-Dodge is definitely capable of bouncing back and picking up the win, but it won't be easy.
The Jaguars need to play the way they did against Oakland-Craig.
Credit West Point-Beemer for a very good game, but Howells-Dodge is a better team than what that score indicated, in my opinion.
The Jaguars have to focus on slowing down the likes of Vicki Gatzemeyer, Tiahna Bonneau, Mariah Petersen, Kelsey Larsen, and Paige Peters.
Those are the main scorers for the Wolverines, and I think Howells-Dodge needs to have a defensive performance like they did against the Knights to win.
I feel the Jaguars will also need to play a strong offensive game to come away with the win.
Although at the same time I don't know if a low scoring defensive struggle is necessarily the worst thing for Howells-Dodge.
This should be a really close and great game.
I think the Jaguars can definitely win, but feel BRLD will really want this one.
A win would stamp the Wolverines as a very tough force to be reckoned with, in my opinion, if they aren't there already.
The Patriots are a very good team this year, and it was very big for BRLD to beat them.
All the momentum certainly appears to be on the Wolverines' side right now, but I think Howells-Dodge can definitely rally around one another and win.
There has to be a lot of team camaraderie amongst the players, and everyone has to be loose and just go out there and have fun.
You could say BRLD has been more consistent to this point, but if the Jaguars are on top of their game, Howells-Dodge could very well pick up the W.
It all depends on which Jaguars' team shows up though, in my opinion.
