Oakland-Craig Boys go 3-0 last week; Girls go 1-2

The Oakland-Craig Boys Basketball Team won 73-35 at Clarkson/Leigh Tuesday night, 67-58 at home over Pender Friday night, and 49-45 at home over Howells-Dodge on Saturday to go 3-0 for the week.

The Knights led the Patriots 19-9 at the end of one, and outscored Clarkson/Leigh 13-8 in the 2nd quarter to take a 32-17 lead into the locker room.

Oakland-Craig won the 3rd quarter 15-12 to go up 47-29 at the end of three.

The Knights put up 26 points in the 4th quarter, and held the Patriots to 6.

Garrison Dodge had a game-high 16 points while Kobe Benne and Wyatt Seagren totaled 15 apiece. Seagren added 8 rebounds while Robby Mayberry scored 7 points.

The Pendragons jumped out to a 13-9 lead on Oakland-Craig after one. The Knights outscored the Pendragons 22-13 in the 2nd quarter to take a 31-26 lead into the locker room.

Pender won the 3rd quarter 15-14 to make it a 45-41 game at the end of three in favor of Oakland-Craig.

The Knights outlasted the Pendragons 22-17 in the 4th quarter.

Kobe Benne led all scorers with 28 points while Tyson Harney notched 11. Dodge added 10 while Seagren chipped in 9 points and 7 rebounds. Jared Mulder tallied 8 points.

The Jaguars went up 8-3 on Oakland-Craig after one. The Knights outscored Howells-Dodge 14-9 in the 2nd quarter to tie the game at 17 at halftime.

Oakland-Craig won the 3rd quarter 18-16 to lead 35-33 at the end of three.

The Knights notched 14 points in the 4th quarter compared to 12 for the Jaguars.

Good response week for Oakland-Craig, in my opinion. The Knights played a couple of great teams to open the season and lost, but bounced back with three hard fought wins.

Oakland-Craig (3-2) and Winnebago (3-0) meet in High School Basketball Action on 107.9 the Bull Tuesday night.

Winnebago is coming off a 95-46 win at Omaha Nation Thursday night.

The Indians have scored over 80 points in all of their games this season, hitting 90+ twice. Oakland-Craig Head Coach Aaron Meyer says the Indians are as good as advertised. "Well they are very athletic, and they just know how to play the game. Quick shooters, they know how to slash. They have a lot of momentum right now. We've got to play well on both ends of the court. Got to be able to handle the basketball cause they're going to be flying all over the place. We've got to be able to withstand some runs, which we did that against Boys Town. We've got to somehow be able to defend the penetration and the wide open 3 at the same time. And then that can be really tough to do, but we've got to figure out a way."

The Knights have won their last 3 after dropping their first two games of the season.

Winnebago Head Coach Jeff Berridge says his squad hopes to continue their run of success against Oakland-Craig. "It should be a fun game. Past couple years we've had the upper hand on them so looking keep it the same and just keep playing Winnebago Basketball, and just have fun with it, and go out and put on a good show."

The Indians beat the Knights 90-69 in Winnebago last year, and 91-48 in Oakland the year before.

Defense is going to be super critical in this game for Oakland-Craig, there's no doubt about it.

As Coach Meyer eluded to, his team has to defend multiple things with this Winnebago squad.

I think boxing out, hustling to loose balls, contesting shots, and coming up with timely turnovers is all going to be very important for the Knights.

Oakland-Craig has to play their best game of the year to come out on top.

The Knights have to raise their level of play, and play the way they did offensively against Clarkson/Leigh, and defensively against Howells-Dodge.

If Oakland-Craig can intermingle those two things together then this could be a very close and interesting game.

There's a lot of speed and athleticism on both teams, and this should be an action packed, high stakes, intense game.

We'll see just how badly the Knights want it, and how well they matchup with the Indians.

Winnebago has had Oakland-Craig's number the last couple of years so it will be interesting to see if the Knights can get any sort of revenge or payback.

Coverage of the girls game is scheduled to begin around 6:00 p.m. with the boys game to follow.

The Oakland-Craig Girls Basketball Team lost 36-30 at Clarkson/Leigh Tuesday night, beat Pender 55-48 at home Friday night, and lost 56-43 at home to Howells-Dodge on Saturday to finish 1-2 for the week.

The Knights led the Patriots 10-8 at the end of one. Clarkson/Leigh won the 2nd quarter 9-8 to make it an 18-17 game at halftime in favor of Oakland-Craig.

The Knights put up 8 points in the 3rd quarter and held the Patriots to 5 to lead 26-22 heading into the 4th.

Clarkson/Leigh outscored Oakland-Craig 14-4 in the 4th and final quarter.

Kennedy Benne had a team-high 16 points.

The Pendragons spurted out to a 15-10 lead after one. The Knights won the 2nd quarter 15-10 to tie the game at 25 at halftime.

Oakland-Craig outscored Pender 20-7 in the 3rd quarter to go up 45-32 at the end of three.

The Pendragons registered 16 points in the 4th quarter compared to the Knights' 10.

Benne totaled 25 points and 12 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Ashley Denton registered 12 points while Makenna Pearson totaled 10.

Oakland-Craig led the Jaguars 13-10 after one. Howells-Dodge outscored the Knights 11-7 in the 2nd quarter to take a 21-20 lead into the locker room.

The game was won in the 3rd quarter as the Jaguars outscored Oakland-Craig 18-7 to go up 39-27 at the end of three.

Howells-Dodge put up 17 4th quarter points compared to 16 for the Knights.

Benne led the way with 15 points while Natalia McNeill registered 12.

Head Coach Joe Anderson assesses his team's play to this point in the season. "So far our girls are giving really good effort. We knew coming into the year new pieces and a lot of things we had to replace from last year's team, and it's coming together slowly. We've had some good games. We started out a couple good wins to start the year. Then we had the Clarkson/Leigh game, which was a game where we just shot the ball extremely poorly, and got in some really bad foul trouble. When you take out your top couple leading scorers, and they miss about half the game, it makes it a little bit tougher go."

Anderson says some younger girls stepped up and shot the ball well in the win over Pender, and his team played well in the 1st half against the Jaguars, but ran out of gas in the loss.

3-2 Oakland-Craig hosts 2-1 Winnebago in High School Basketball on 107.9 the Bull Tuesday night.

The Indians are coming off a 52-37 loss at Omaha Nation Thursday night.

The Indians have scored 60+ points in their two wins. Anderson says slowing down Winnebago's offense and playing well offensively is going to be critical. "One thing they're going to do they're going to put the ball in the basket. They find a way to score. We got to make sure we can match that, and play defensively. Don't give them any open shots. Cause if you give them open shots they're going to hit them. So we got to make sure we contest and pressure them on the defensive end. And then offensively we've got to make sure we convert. We struggle shooting the ball at times, and we can't have one of those shooting nights cause we're going to have to keep up with their scoring."

Winnebago Head Coach Doug Mackling says his squad will have to deal with Oakland-Craig's speed. "They seem quick, they're fast. Not too terribly tall. So I think I'm going to go with a smaller lineup. Trying to matchup with them. And I'm going to tell my girls that they got to run the court. These Oakland girls look like they're fast, and want to run, and get out in front and go. And I want to matchup with them. I'm working on transition D this week, and getting my girls back and getting them ready to setup the defense."

The Knights won last year's game 78-39 in Winnebago.

The Indians appear to be the real deal, but Oakland-Craig appears to be solid as well.

This should be a good, competitive game, and I feel things can truly go either way.

I look for both teams to get after one another, especially defensively.

I feel the Knights have the advantage defensively, but think Winnebago has the advantage offensively.

Oakland-Craig has to come up with a good game plan for slowing down Charli, Kae, and Isabel Earth, as well as Jayla Price.

These four girls have transferred back from Fremont and Homer, respectively, and have combined to make a great foursome for the Indians.

I look for Benne, Denton, Pearson, and McNeill to all have strong games for the Knights.

I think Oakland-Craig will play well, and put themselves in a good position to win.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Knights' defense stepped up and made this a defensive battle.

Coverage of the girls game is scheduled to begin around 6:00 p.m. on 107.9 the Bull with the boys game to follow.
