Howells-Dodge Boys and Girls lose to BRLD; beat Clarkson/Leigh
The Howells-Dodge Boys Basketball Team lost 50-39 at BRLD Friday night before winning 53-42 at home against Clarkson/Leigh on Saturday.
The Wolverines led the Jaguars 20-12 at the end of one, and won the 2nd quarter 13-11 to take a 33-23 lead into the locker room.
Howells-Dodge outscored BRLD 11-5 in the 3rd quarter to get back in it, trailing 38-34 at the end of three.
The Wolverines scored 12 points in the 4th quarter and held the Jaguars to just 5.
Caden Jackson had a team-high 14 points while Dax VanLengen scored 10. Lane Hegemann added 8 points and 11 rebounds.
The Patriots led 10-9 after one. Howells-Dodge won the 2nd quarter 12-10 to take a 21-20 lead into the locker room.
The Jaguars created some breathing room in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Patriots 18-10 to lead 39-30 at the end of three.
Howells-Dodge notched 14 points in the 4th quarter compared to 12 for Clarkson/Leigh.
VanLengen had 14 points and 7 rebounds while Connor Blum totaled 9 points. Kade Hegemann registered 8 while Jackson totaled 7. Lane Hegemann added 9 rebounds.
Head Coach Cole Fischer on the win. "We battled and were able to finish in the 4th quarter."
The Jaguars (5-3) take part in the Knight Holiday Classic at Midland in Fremont Thursday night.
Howells-Dodge's first opponent is Hartington Cedar Catholic (3-1).
The Trojans won 68-48 at home over Crofton last Tuesday night.
Cedar Catholic is a very good team once again, but I feel this is a tremendous opportunity for the Jaguars.
Howells-Dodge has to build off what they did against the Patriots in the 2nd half, and play even better Thursday night.
The Jaguars have to be better than they were on Friday and Saturday though.
The Wolverines are a great team, and the Patriots are an up and coming team, but Howells-Dodge can definitely play at a higher level, in my opinion.
The Jaguars are going to need to raise their level of play to beat the Trojans I would say. Beating Cedar Catholic is certainly no easy task. If anything it is a very tall task.
Howells-Dodge can definitely do it though. The Jaguars are a very good team in their own right, and have played some pretty good basketball overall this season.
Howells-Dodge has to get back to playing the way they did against West Point-Beemer.
If the Jaguars play like that night in and night out they're going to be pretty darn difficult to beat.
It's a matter of Howells-Dodge becoming consistent with their play, and playing at a high and elite level at all times.
The Jaguars can definitely do it. Howells-Dodge just has to focus really hard on the little things, and execute at a high level on offense, and play at a high level on defense.
Howells-Dodge has to have one gear, which is go, go, go all the time.
The Jaguars have to be willing to give 110% every time they take to the floor.
Howells-Dodge has to put in the hard work in practice and find ways to work even harder in practice and in games to sustain a consistent high level of play.
Thursday night's game is set to start at 6:00 p.m.
The Howels-Dodge Girls lost 46-34 at BRLD Friday night before topping Clarkson/Leigh 33-31 at home on Saturday.
The Jaguars led the Wolverines 11-7 after one. BRLD won the 2nd quarter 10-4 to take a 17-15 lead at halftime.
The Wolverines outscored Howells-Dodge 17-8 in the 3rd quarter to go up 34-23 at the end of three.
BRLD put up 12 points in the 4th quarter compared to 11 for the Jaguars.
Macey Kulhanek had a game-high 14 points while Erin Prusa totaled 12. Jessi Brester chipped in 8 points and 9 rebounds.
Howells-Dodge doubled up the Patriots 8-4 in the 1st quarter. The Jaguars outscored Clarkson/Leigh 11-6 in the 2nd quarter to go up 19-10 at halftime.
The Patriots won the 3rd quarter 11-8 to make it a 27-21 game at the end of three.
Clarkson/Leigh notched 10 points in the 4th quarter compared to 6 for Howells-Dodge.
Kulhanek led all scorers with 15 points while Prusa added 7 points and 12 rebounds. Grace Dvorak recorded 8 rebounds.
The Jaguars did just enough to win on Saturday. Friday's game was a tough loss for Howells-Dodge you could say.
The Jaguars (4-4) are off until the BRLD Holiday Tournament next Friday.
I'm not sure who Howells-Dodge plays, but other teams in the tournament include the host Wolverines, GACC, and Homer.
Regardless of who the Jaguars play, Howells-Dodge has to use this extra practice time to improve and fine tune their craft offensively.
The more shooting the Jaguars do between now and the Holiday Tournament the better off they will be.
The five-day moratorium starts on Saturday, which means no teams can hold organized team practices for 5 days.
That doesn't mean Howells-Dodge can't do their own individual workouts and shooting drills though.
The Jaguars have to be sharp and crisp during this off time.
This week's practices and any practices after the moratorium before the Holiday Tournament are going to be very important for Howells-Dodge, in my opinion.
The Jaguars are a very strong defensive team, but Howells-Dodge could benefit from more girls contributing in the scoring column and putting up more points.
Kulhanek and Prusa are doing the majority of the team's scoring, and players like Jessi Brester and others have to consistently and continually step up and score for this team to get over the hump.
I know the Jaguars have it in them. Howells-Dodge has just run into some tough times with a young team and everyone still trying to find their way in the young season.
I think the long layoff with no games is a good thing for the Jaguars as it allows Howells-Dodge to just catch their breath and take a step back, and examine how they're doing things, and how they could do things better.
I look for the Jaguars to be refreshed and ready to go by the time they take the floor next Friday.
It should be a successful weekend of basketball for Howells-Dodge next weekend.
I think the Jaguars have what it takes to get back to the championship game and win it his time if they play up to their full potential.
