West Point-Beemer Boys lose to North Bend Central and Howells-Dodge; Girls fall to Tigers, beat Jaguars

The West Point-Beemer Boys lost 61-25 at home to North Bend Central on Thursday, December 12th in action aired on 107.9 the Bull before falling 54-41 at Howells-Dodge Tuesday night also in action aired on the Bull.

The Tigers led 18-5 after one, and won the 2nd quarter 13-12 to go up 31-17 at halftime.

North Bend Central outscored the Cadets 13-3 in the 3rd quarter to lead 44-20 at the end of three.

The Tigers outscored West Point-Beemer 17-5 in the 4th quarter.

Zach Vander Griend had 10 points for the Cadets.

The Jaguars led 13-11 after one, and outscored West Point-Beemer 17-6 in the 2nd quarter to take a 30-17 lead into the locker room.

The Cadets won the 3rd quarter 14-10 to make it a 40-31 game at the end of three.

Howells-Dodge won the 4th quarter 14-10.

Vander Griend led West Point-Beemer with 16 points.

The Cadets (1-4) face defending C-1 State Champion Auburn (4-0) in the first round of the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout in Wayne on Friday.

The Bulldogs won 55-35 at Freeman Friday night.

This will be a tremendous challenge for West Point-Beemer.

I think the game could be an eye opener for the Cadets in that West Point-Beemer will see a top team not from around the area.

The Cadets have to come out and play good basketball early, and maintain a high level of play throughout.

Auburn is a great team and program led by former Beatrice Coach Jim Weeks, and the Bulldogs will be tough for West Point-Beemer to deal with no doubt.

Hopefully the Cadets are in the gym shooting and working on their game right now because I feel West Point-Beemer could really use the work in the gym.

The Cadets have to work on shooting because scoring has been an issue for West Point-Beemer this season.

The Cadets have been fairly respectable defensively, it's just the offense that needs to kick it into high gear.

I must admit I am surprised West Point-Beemer has struggled as much as they have offensively.

But then again the Cadets are a young team and are under a first year Head Coach in Jahn Kile.

So it's going to take time for West Point-Beemer to get to where they need to be, but I feel this tournament is an opportunity for growth and improvement from the Cadets.

I think it would be a big step in the right direction for West Point-Beemer to at least compete and keep things close with Auburn.

The Cadets have been in most games they've played so far this year, but the thing West Point-Beemer has to avoid on Friday is getting ran out of the gym.

The Cadets will face either Arlington or Laurel-Concord-Coleridge on Saturday.

Hopefully West Point-Beemer comes out and plays inspired basketball this weekend.

Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Wayne State College.

The West Point-Beemer Girls lost 53-43 at home to North Bend Central on Thursday, December 12th in action that was aired on 107.9 the Bull before winning 40-34 at Howells-Dodge last Tuesday night in action also aired on the Bull.

The Tigers led 14-10 after one, and won the 2nd quarter 15-10 to take a 29-20 lead into the locker room.

The Cadets won the 3rd quarter 15-12 to make it a 41-35 game at the end of three.

North Bend Central won the 4th quarter 12-8.

Sidney Swanson had 24 points.

West Point-Beemer led the Jaguars 6-4 after one, and outscored Howells-Dodge 15-8 in the 2nd quarter to take a 21-12 lead into the locker room.

The Jaguars won the 3rd quarter 16-11 to make it a 32-28 game at the end of three.

The Cadets won the 4th quarter 8-6.

Swanson had 24 points for the Cadets while Hannah Landholm added 7. Jadyn Meiergerd totaled 7 rebounds.

I thought West Point-Beemer played North Bend Central tough, and did enough to beat Howells-Dodge.

The Cadets (3-2) take on Auburn (1-4) in the first round of the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout at Wayne State on Friday.

The Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season at Freeman Friday night, winning 35-29.

West Point-Beemer should be able to win this one you would think.

Auburn has played a tough schedule and has been in most games they've played, but have come up short quite a bit.

I look for the Cadets to get their rematch with Arlington in the Semifinals and advance to the Championship against Hastings St. Cecilia more than likely.

I think West Point-Beemer can at least go 2-1 in this tournament.

That would be pretty solid for the Cadets if they can do it.

West Point-Beemer needs to stay active and busy shooting and running and stuff on their own during the moratorium.

I think it's very important for the Cadets to workout during this moratorium period.

West Point-Beemer has to come out sharp on Friday as opposed to flat or something of that nature.

I feel Friday's game has a chance to be low scoring and defensive, but we will see what happens.

I'm waiting for the Cadets to break out offensively, and feel that could and will happen at some point this year.

West Point-Beemer needs other girls besides Swanson to step up offensively.

She kind of single handily carried the Cadets against the Tigers and Jaguars.

The more shooting West Point-Beemer does during this moratorium period the better off I feel they will be.

The Cadets need to have a good showing in this tournament, and do everything they can to win it.

If West Point-Beemer can at least get to the Championship Game I think that would be a very positive thing.

I feel the Cadets' best basketball is ahead of them, and look for them to play well this weekend.

Friday's game is scheduled to tip-off at 12:30 p.m. at Rice Auditorium.
