BRLD Boys top Logan View/Scribner-Snyder at home, beat Auburn at Heartland Hoops Classic; Girls down Raiders

The BRLD Boys Basketball Team topped Logan View/Scribner-Snyder 42-32 at home Friday night before winning 68-52 over Auburn at the Heartland Hoops Classic in Grand Island on Saturday.

BRLD led the Raiders 15-9 at the end of the 1st quarter, and went up 18-9 in the 2nd quarter before leading 22-16 at halftime.

The Raiders went on a 6-0 run to start the 3rd quarter and tied the game at 22 before the Wolverines went on a 12-2 run to lead 34-24 later in the quarter.

BRLD led 34-27 at the end of the third, and salted the game away in the 4th quarter, winning the frame 8-5.

Jaxon Johnson and Will Gatzemeyer each had 13 points to lead the Wolverines.

Head Coach Cory Meyer says the Raiders slowed things down. "Logan View that's their game. They like to do that, and they've done a good job with that. But like I said going into this game I was just going to be happy with a win, and we got that."

Coach Meyer he said he thought his team was looking ahead to Saturday's game. Very impressive win for BRLD against the Bulldogs nonetheless.

The Wolverines (20-1) close out the regular season Friday night at home against Pender (9-12).

The Pendragons are coming off a 58-45 win over Wynot on the road Thursday night.

Pender has won 3 in a row and 5 out of their last 6.

The Pendragons are playing really good basketball right now and have some good players on their team, but so does and is BRLD.

I look for the Wolverines to close out the regular season with a win.

BRLD has been nearly perfect this year, and I look for the Wolverines to continue their winning ways on Friday.

The one thing BRLD can't afford to have though is a post-Auburn hangover.

The Wolverines have a lot of time to be over that game if they aren't already so that shouldn't be an issue.

BRLD is on the cusp of doing great things this coming postseason, and a big resounding win over Pender would be a great way to head into Sub-Districts.

The Wolverines have to be excited about the potential of getting back to state and perhaps winning a State Championship.

If BRLD plays the way they did on Saturday they are going to be a very tough team to beat I would say.

The Wolverines have to come out and play a great game from start to finish against the Pendragons.

BRLD shouldn't be looking ahead to the postseason as they won't have a specific opponent to look forward to.

The only team the Wolverines should be concerned with right now is Pender.

I think guard play and depth will be the difference in this one.

I feel the Wolverines have better guard play and better depth at the post position.

Sam Mailloux is a heck of a player for the Pendragons, but I feel Johnson and Nick Ronnfeldt can neutralize him.

I look for Johnson, Gatzemeyer, Lucas Vogt, and Darwin Snyder, among others, to do big things for BRLD.

The BRLD Girls Basketball Team routed Logan View/Scribner-Snyder 65-25 at home Friday night in action heard on 107.9 the Bull.

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder went up 4-2, but BRLD's press was too much for the Raiders to overcome as the Wolverines forced 18 first half turnovers, unofficially, on their way to an 18-2 run in the first quarter to lead 20-6 at the end of the 1st quarter.

BRLD outscored the Raiders 20-2 in the 2nd quarter to take a 40-8 lead into the locker room.

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder won the 3rd quarter 8-7 to make it a 47-16 game at the end of three.

The Wolverines doubled up the Raiders 18-9 in the 4th quarter.

Caragan Tietz led all scorers with 14 points while senior Brandi Simonsen notched 12. Kelsey Larsen and freshman Alyssa Buchholz chipped in 7 apiece.

Head Coach Rod Peters says the press was effective. "Yeah I thought tonight we allowed our press to do some good things for us. And a lot times our press gets our offense going, so I was glad to see that. We've been struggling with the press here lately. So it was good to see that we got some good things out of it tonight."

BRLD (15-7) takes on GACC (14-8) in the C2-5 Sub-District Tournament at Pender Tuesday night in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.

GACC lost 56-38 at home to Pierce Thursday night to end the regular season.

Peters on the matchup. "We know that the tradition they've had starts from the top with Jerry (Stracke) and Kevin (Kreikemeier) coaching. They've been there for a long time, they know what they're doing. They're great coaches. Anybody would love to have them on their staff. And they got some great players too so they do a really nice job. They'll be ready to play, and I know our girls are going to be ready to play on Tuesday night also."

It should be a great game.

The Bluejays have made state 21 years in a row, but a loss to the Wolverines likely ends that streak.

I'm sure BRLD would love to end GACC's streak, and put themselves in a position to make a Sub-State game win or lose against Oakland-Craig or whoever they would play in the Sub-District Final Thursday night.

I feel it can definitely happen too given the way the Wolverines played on Friday.

I thought BRLD's press was super effective.

The Bluejays beat the Wolverines 83-78 on December 29th in the Howells-Dodge Holiday Tournament.

I feel BRLD is playing better basketball than they were then and don't know if GACC is playing as well right now as they were then.

Still though, both teams figure to really get after things with the press.

It should be a great game and you know the Bluejays won't go down without a fight.

If the Wolverines are to beat GACC they will have really earned it.

BRLD has to be confident and must believe they can do it though.

I feel the Wolverines are a really good young up and coming team.

We'll see what happens and how BRLD fares Tuesday night. It should be a great game regardless of who wins.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on the Bull.
