Wisner-Pilger Boys defeat Madison in Regular Season Finale; Girls knock off Omaha Nation, fall to Oakland-Craig in Sub-Districts

The Wisner-Pilger Boys Basketball Team rounded out the regular season Friday night with an 83-53 home win over Madison.

The Gators tripled up the Dragons 18-6 in the 1st quarter before outscoring Madison 20-9 in the 2nd quarter to lead 38-15 at halftime.

Wisner-Pilger won the 3rd quarter 25-18 to go up 63-33 at the end of three.

Both teams scored 20 points in the 4th quarter.

Good win for the Gators to close out the regular season. I felt the win got Wisner-Pilger back on track.

The Gators (14-9) take on Stanton (6-16) in the C2-6 Sub-District Play-In Game Monday night from Norfolk Catholic in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.

The Mustangs won 45-39 at Emerson-Hubbard Friday night to close out the regular season.

The two teams met earlier this season with Wisner-Pilger winning 58-49.

Both teams are coming off wins to close out the regular season, and that should make for a highly competitive, compelling, and entertaining game Monday night.

It's a rivalry game, and I wouldn't expect anything less than a great effort from both sides.

It should be a very good game, especially for a Play-In-Game.

I totally expect there to be a big crowd and big student section from both sides.

I think if the Gators can get past the Mustangs and play the way they did against Madison they have a chance to upset Wakefield on Tuesday.

Wisner-Pilger has to be focused on Stanton and must worry about getting past the Mustangs first, but if the Gators do that then they should be in prime position to give the Trojans all they can ever want and handle and then some.

This is a senior laden group Wisner-Pilger has, and I look for them to give it everything they've got in the postseason.

This is the last chance for a lot of these kids to do something and get to state.

This is a tough Sub-District, but anyone can beat anyone in the postseason on any given night.

The Gators have to try and key on Nathan Arens, Sam Bates, Marcus Spotanski, and TJ Larson.

Those four are very good for the Mustangs, and Wisner-Pilger has to try and make life very difficult for them.

The Gators also have to get out and score the ball the way they did against the Dragons.

If Wisner-Pilger can play the way they did against Madison offensively in this Sub-District, and shore things up defensively, they could potentially win it.

It's kind of crazy that a 14-9 record gets you the Play-In Game, but it goes to show how deep this Sub-District is.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on the Bull.

The winner gets the Trojans at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Wisner-Pilger Girls beat Omaha Nation 69-49 in the C2-5 Sub-District Play-In Game from Pender Monday night in action aired on 107.9 the Bull before losing 59-33 to Oakland-Craig Tuesday night in the Sub-District Semifinals to close out the season.

The Chiefs got out to an early 11-5 lead, before the Gators game back to take a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Wisner-Pilger built a 28-17 advantage in the second, but Omaha Nation went on a 7-0 run to cut it to 28-24. The Gators scored three unanswered to end the quarter and went into halftime with a 31-24 lead.

The Gators outscored the Chiefs 18-8 and pulled away in the second half. They added another 20 points in the fourth quarter despite of couple of scoring runs from Omaha Nation.

Jordan Wegner had a career night for the Gators, totaling 40 points. She scored 14 in the first half, while adding 13 in the third quarter and 13 in the fourth, tallying 26 second half points. She also finished 8-11 from the free throw line.

The Gators and Knights were tied at 14 after one before Oakland-Craig outscored Wisner-Pilger 24-2 in the 2nd quarter to take a 38-16 lead into the locker room.

The Knights won the 3rd quarter 15-10 to go up 53-26 at the end of three.

The Gators won the 4th quarter 7-6.

Wisner-Pilger was led by Aspin Waterman, who had 10 points. Jordan Wegner added 9.

Great and valiant effort in Sub-Districts by Wegner and the Gators I thought.

Wisner-Pilger ends the season at 7-17.

The win over Stanton in the regular season had to be the highlight of the year for the Gators.

That in itself probably made Wisner-Pilger's season I'm willing to bet.

With that said, the Gators have lots of work to do in the future.

Wisner-Pilger says goodbye to Wegner, Cassidy Gooch, and Taylor Stuhr.

These three girls did a lot for Gator Basketball and will be missed no doubt.

Key returners for Wisner-Pilger include Macy Stuhr, Makenzi Brown, Reagan Scholting, Waterman, Karrin Jindra, Hannah Stoffel, Adi Meyer, Emily Hatterman, and Lindsey Kneifl.

There's lots of key, good, and talented players returning for Wisner-Pilger next season.

Wegner is a huge loss and all of these girls will have to step up and pick up the scoring void left by her.

The Gators have a lot of work to do this offseason, and should be in the gym shooting and working on their craft as much as possible.

I know a lot of these girls do Volleyball and probably track as well, but I feel Wisner-Pilger could definitely benefit from some nice improvements in basketball.

These girls are good enough athletes to be successful in the sport, in my opinion, they just need to devote a lot of time to the game.

Becoming more polished handling the ball could be beneficial for the Gators as well I feel.

Wisner-Pilger has to grow and improve throughout the course of the offseason, and feel good about themselves heading into next season.

These girls are definitely capable of turning things around next season, in my opinion, but next season starts now.

The Gators have to be gym rats and have to have that drive, heart, and determination to get better before next season rolls around.

I expect big things out of Wisner-Pilger in Volleyball next year, and those expectations have to carry over to basketball also.
