Stanton Boys end year with Sub-District loss to Wisner-Pilger

The Stanton Boys Basketball Team lost 37-28 to Wisner-Pilger in the C2-6 Sub-District Play-In game aired on 107.9 the Bull from Norfolk Catholic Monday night.

The game was tied at 12 after one before the Gators tripled up the Mustangs 6-2 in the 3rd quarter to lead 18-14 at halftime.

Stanton doubled up Wisner-Pilger 6-3 in the 3rd quarter to make it a 21-20 game at the end of three in favor of the Gators.

Wisner-Pilger doubled up the Mustangs 16-8 in the 4th quarter.

Marcus Spotanski had a team-high 10 points while Sam Bates added 8.

A great and valiant effort from Stanton, but the Mustangs came up a tad bit short.

Stanton ends the season at 6-17.

Big wins came over Oakland-Craig, Boone Central/Newman Grove, and West Holt when the Mustangs were playing their best basketball in the middle of the season.

Stanton played well at times this year, but wasn't quite consistent enough throughout the season to win more games.

The Mustangs were led in scoring on the season by Spotanski, who averaged 12 points. TJ Larson averaged 10 while Nathan Arens averaged 9. Bates averaged 7.

Rebounding wise Arens averaged 157 rebounds while Spotanski averaged 138. Bates averaged 116.

Stanton says goodbye to Spotanski, Bates, and Arens.

These three players are very big and significant losses for the Mustangs I would say, and will be sorely missed.

Key returners include Larson, Ben Wilke, and Parker Krusemark.

Stanton was really young this year and will be a fairly new team next year.

The players I just mentioned have to step up and be leaders for the Mustangs next season.

They need to lead by example and have everyone follow their lead.

Stanton will need to get in the weightroom and develop some new post players given the loss of Arens and Bates.

The Mustangs figure to be strong at the guard positions next year, but will need some growth and development at the post positions I would say.

The returning players and newcomers need to take part in as many team camps, open gyms, weightlifting sessions, and summer leagues as possible.

Everyone needs to wake up ready to get to work in the offseason.

Champions are made between April and November, not between December and March.

Stanton has to put the time in if they want to be good again, and I feel they will and can be.

The Mustangs have to prepare for next season as soon as possible, and improve and grow as much as they can before next season rolls around.
