Howells-Dodge Boys top Lutheran High Northeast in regular season finale; Girls beat Fullerton, lose to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in Sub-Districts
The Howells-Dodge Boys Basketball Team won 67-63 at home over Lutheran High Northeast in Friday night's regular season finale.
The Eagles went up 25-14 at the end of one before the Jaguars outscored them 22-15 in the 2nd quarter to make it a 40-36 game at halftime in favor of LHNE.
Howells-Dodge won the 3rd quarter 19-15 to tie the game at 55 at the end of three.
The Jaguars won the 4th quarter 12-8 to make up the final score.
Great win for Howells-Dodge after falling behind early.
The Jaguars (16-8) take on Lutheran High Northeast (13-8) again in the C2-6 Sub-District Semifinals from Norfolk Catholic Tuesday night in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.
It should be another great game in round two between the two teams.
I think if the Jaguars can avoid another slow start against the Eagles they should have a good chance to win.
If LHNE has another first quarter like they did Friday though then I don't know if Howells-Dodge can rally again.
It should be another great game between two very solid teams.
It's never easy to beat a team twice in a row, but that is exactly what the Jaguars will try and do.
Howells-Dodge can definitely do it, in my opinion, but I don't feel it will be easy.
Of course nothing comes easy this time of year given the fact it is the postseason.
The Jaguars have had a really nice season, and are in position to make the Sub-District Final and perhaps get to Sub-State.
I feel Wakefield is the clear cut favorite in this Sub-District, but feel every team in it can contend and win it, in my opinion.
Howells-Dodge has been pretty consistent this year, and will need to be on top of their game Tuesday night to beat the Eagles again.
Even if the Jaguars lose to LHNE or Wakefield or whoever else, they might have a chance at getting a Sub-State Game.
I feel Howells-Dodge needs to at least beat the Eagles to make sure that happens should they not win the Sub-District though.
The Jaguars well played well on Friday I thought, but Howells-Dodge will need to get off to a faster start and be better on defense this time around to win again, in my opinion.
If the Jaguars are on offensively also that figures to give them an advantage I would say.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. on the Bull.
If the Jaguars win they will play either Wakefield or Wisner-Pilger in Thursday's Sub-District Final we would also have on the Bull at 7:00 p.m.
The Howells-Dodge Girls Basketball Team beat Fullerton 50-27 in the D1-5 Sub-District Semifinals from Shelby Wednesday night before falling 44-35 to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in Thursday's Sub-District Final.
The Jaguars went up 13-4 at the end of one on the Warriors before winning the 2nd quarter 9-4 to take a 22-8 lead into the locker room.
Howells-Dodge outscored Fullerton 14-6 in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 36-14 at the end of three.
The Jaguars won the 4th quarter 14-13.
Erin Prusa totaled 19 points and 8 rebounds while Madyson Cech notched a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Cassie Pieper added 7 points.
The Bulldogs led 7-4 after one, and outscored Howells-Dodge 16-5 in the 2nd quarter to take a 23-9 lead into the locker room.
The Jaguars won the 3rd quarter 10-8 to make it a 31-19 game at the end of three in favor of Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family.
Howells-Dodge won the 4th quarter 16-13.
Pieper led all scorers with 15 points.
A lack of scoring in the first half ultimately cost the Jaguars the game it appears.
Howells-Dodge ends the season at 9-14.
It was a tough start to the season for the Jaguars, who played a really tough schedule without the likes of Tonya Brester and Grace Dvorak the entire season.
Howells-Dodge started the season 1-8 and then won a bunch of games in the second half of the season before losing to some more good teams at the end of the season.
Prusa led the way in scoring this year with 14 points a game while Jessi Brester and Pieper averaged 10 and 7, respectively.
Brester led the way in rebounds with 174 while Prusa totaled 164.
The Jaguars say goodbye to Dvorak, Tonya Brester, Prusa, Jessi Brester, and Hannah Bayer.
Each one of these girls are very talented and their loss will be felt no doubt.
Key returners include Grace Kreikemeier, Pieper, Riley Pokorny, Lilly Praest, Cech, Jaedyn Ratzlaff, Alyssa Coufal, and Brooklyn Macholan.
Lots of talent lost, but lots returning and coming back for Howells-Dodge.
The Jaguars have to be saddened by losing who they lose, but be excited for the future given all who comes back.
I feel players like Ratzlaff, Pieper, and even Praest got more playing time due to the absence of Tonya Brester and Dvorak.
It was too bad those two had to miss the entire season due to injury, but some players that wouldn't of normally started got some experience that should help Howells-Dodge in the future.
I think the Jaguars have the potential to be good next year.
Prusa and Jessi Brester are big scoring losses in the post though so Macholan and Cech and others will need to step up down low next season.
I feel Pieper has a chance to have a really good breakout season for Howells-Dodge next year.
It's too bad Dvorak and Tonya Brester had to miss this entire season though. Imagine what the Jaguars could have been and done with them in the starting lineup.
It is what it is though and there's nothing Howells-Dodge can do about it now.
The Jaguars have to simply move on and get ready for next year.
