North Bend Central Boys beat Howells-Dodge, lose to GICC at Heartland Hoops Classic; Girls end regular season with win over Jaguars

North Bend Central hosted Howells-Dodge on 107.9 the Bull Thursday night, with Join Up With Joel contest winner Taya VanLengen of H-D assisting on the call.

The game was high scoring right away, with NBC grabbing an early 18-15 lead after the first quarter, and a 40-37 lead at halftime.

H-D outscored the Tigers in the third quarter, and the game was tied 51-51 heading into the fourth.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Tigers, however, as NBC went off for 28 points, and they pulled away for a 79-65 win over the Jaguars.

Tanner Wietfeld had 22 points including four three pointers for the Tigers. John Emanuel scored 18, Jaxon Wietfeld added 16 points and Chase Ruzicka had 12.

NBC led the Crusaders 18-17 at the end of the 1st quarter, and won the 2nd quarter 12-9 to take a 30-26 lead into the locker room.

GICC outscored the Tigers 17-5 in the 3rd quarter to pull in front 43-35 at the end of three.

The Crusaders won the 4th quarter 9-8, and the game 52-43.

Going cold in the 3rd quarter and second half is what cost North Bend Central against GICC it appears.

The Tigers (19-3) round out the regular season at Fort Calhoun (13-8) Friday night.

The Pioneers won 57-43 at Raymond Central Friday night.

Fort Calhoun is a solid team, and has lost to some good teams.

The Pioneers beat Logan View/Scribner-Snyder by 16 in the first round of the Elmwood-Murdock Holiday Tournament.

So Fort Calhoun is definitely capable of beating team good teams.

I feel like North Bend Central hasn't played as well the last few games as they were prior to losing to BRLD in the East Husker Conference Tournament Championship Game.

I feel the Tigers have still been good their last few games, but not as lights out and dominate as they were before.

I look for North Bend Central to come out and reestablish their dominant play Friday night.

I think the Tigers will set the reset button and regroup following the GICC loss.

North Bend Central has all week to prepare and practice, and I look for them to do well.

I think the Tigers have the potential to win this game by 20.

North Bend Central has to come out and smash and be dominant and reestablish their great play Friday night.

The Tigers have to try and slow down the likes of Michael Shirley, Zane Schwarz, and Grant Halford.

They each scored double digits and figures against the Mustangs.

North Bend Central just has to play their game and they should be fine.

The Tigers have to regroup and not have a scoring drought the way they did in the second half against the Crusaders.

All of North Bend Central's goals, dreams, and aspirations are still in front of them.

The Tigers just can't their recent losses lead to another loss on Friday.

I feel a win, and a big win, would be just what North Bend Central needs heading into the postseason.

North Bend Central hosted Howells-Dodge on 107.9 the Bull Thursday night, with Join Up With Joel contest winner Taya VanLengen of H-D assisting on the call.

Points were hard to come by in the first half, with NBC leading 17-14 at the intermission.

The Jaguars had a strong third quarter, outscoring NBC 15-8, and took a 29-25 lead into the fourth.

The Tigers made 14 free throws in the fourth quarter and were able to create separation late, defeating H-D 49-43.

Lauren Emanuel led NBC with 18 points.

A solid win for the Tigers to end the regular season.

North Bend Central (16-7) takes on Arlington (15-8) in the C1-6 Sub-District Tournament at Oakland-Craig Tuesday night.

The Eagles won 58-40 at home over Wayne Friday night to round out the regular season.

Arlington knocked off the Tigers 47-45 in North Bend in the regular season.

This should be a very close game that can truly go either way.

Things figure to be very close and tight, and could be decided by a few points or less I feel.

Overtime wouldn't surprise me either.

The good thing about the postseason this year as opposed to past years is there's a new Sub-State format.

That means a team like North Bend Central can still make Sub-State even if they lose to Arlington or West Point-Beemer or Tekamah-Herman.

That shouldn't take away from the meaning and importance of Sub-Districts though.

If the Tigers win on Tuesday and Thursday that will drastically improve their Sub-State seeding.

A win over Arlington should be enough to get in you would think even if North Bend Central loses to the Cadets if they play them.

A loss to the Eagles makes things real close and iffy when it comes to Sub-State though so the Tigers really need this one.

It's hard to beat a team twice in the same season, especially when the first meeting was so close.

This game can truly go either way though, and you can't overlook and have to give credit to Arlington for what they've done this season, and for beating North Bend Central the first time around.

The Tigers have to reverse the result and flip the script as they say.

I think North Bend Central could either beat the Eagles and challenge the Cadets for a third time should the two teams meet, or could lose a close game to Arlington.

For the Tigers, it all comes down to converting close shots at the basket, rebounding, and making free throws, in my opinion.

Every possession, every play is critical, and the Tigers have to make sure they're doing everything in their power to be as successful as possible at all times.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
