Emerson-Hubbard Boys fall to Omaha Nation and Stanton to end regular season; Girls edge Chiefs and then fall to Bloomfield in Sub-Districts
The Emerson-Hubbard Boys Basketball Team lost 71-65 at home to Omaha Nation last Thursday night before falling 45-39 at home to Stanton Friday night to end the regular season.
The Pirates led the Chiefs 20-19 after one, and won the 2nd quarter 17-15 to take a 37-34 lead into the locker room.
Omaha Nation outscored Emerson-Hubbard 16-11 in the 3rd quarter to pull in front 50-48 at the end of three.
The Chiefs won the 4th quarter 21-17.
Nolan Belt had a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds while Jacob Kneifl had 17 points. Spencer Burcham and Mason Hall added 12 apiece.
The Mustangs led the Pirates 9-5 at the end of one. Emerson-Hubbard won the 2nd quarter 21-17 to tie the game at 26 at halftime.
Both teams scored 6 points in the 3rd quarter, and the score was tied at 32 at the end of three.
Stanton outscored the Pirates 13-7 in the 4th quarter.
I thought Emerson-Hubbard played well both games, just coming up a little short in the fourth quarter in each game.
The Pirates (7-15) battle Allen (9-12) in the D1-4 Sub-District Semifinals from Ponca Tuesday night.
The Eagles lost 76-52 at Omaha Nation Friday night.
Emerson-Hubbard beat Allen 38-36 on the road in the regular season.
This figures to be a tight and close game, but could potentially be a double digit win for the Pirates given how they've been playing lately.
This Sub-District is wide open, and certainly anyone can win it.
Emerson-Hubbard has to come out ready to play a great game Tuesday night.
The Pirates have to finish better than they did against the Chiefs and Mustangs.
Emerson-Hubbard had a couple of strong finishes against Homer and Randolph, and have to get back to that Tuesday night.
The Pirates figure to have a better chance of beating the Eagles a second time given the fact they played Stanton and Omaha Nation, both C-2 foes, tough.
Allen hasn't played as tough a schedule as Emerson-Hubbard, in my opinion, and that should be to the Pirates' benefit.
Emerson-Hubbard has to come out ready to take the fight to the Eagles for four quarters, and must leave no doubt.
The Pirates have to do everything they can to win. There is no tomorrow if they lose.
Emerson-Hubbard has to go out there and execute at a high level on offense and must play solid defense as well.
The Pirates have to box out and rebound well, contest shots, play the passing lanes, create turnovers, and get out and run.
Emerson-Hubbard has to be so suffocating defensively that it's really tough for Allen to get shots off.
The Pirates have to stay calm and knock down free throws and open shots.
At the same time Emerson-Hubbard has to attack the basket and pass the ball with precision and authority.
Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The Emerson-Hubbard Girls Basketball Team won 48-47 at home over Omaha Nation to close out the regular season last Thursday night before falling 44-34 to Bloomfield in the D2-4 Sub-District Semifinals at Hartington Cedar Catholic Tuesday night.
The Pirates went up 13-5 at the end of one on the Chiefs. Emerson-Hubbard won the 2nd quarter 13-8 to go up 26-13 at halftime.
The Pirates won the 3rd quarter 15-12 to extend their lead to 41-25 at the end of three.
Omaha Nation outscored Emerson-Hubbard 22-7 in the 4th quarter.
Melanie Gentrup posted 22 points and 7 rebounds while Brynn Schock and Taylor Daum notched 9 and 7 points, respectively. Stephanie Ferusca added 10 rebounds.
The Pirates led the Bees 10-9 at the end of one. Bloomfield quadrupled up Emerson-Hubbard 12-3 in the 2nd quarter to take a 21-13 lead into the locker room.
The Bees outscored the Pirates 15-7 in the 3rd quarter to go up 36-20 at the end of three.
Emerson-Hubbard outscored Bloomfield 14-8 in the 4th quarter.
Gentrup had 19 points to lead the way while Daum posted 8 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bees simply got the best of the Pirates.
Emerson-Hubbard's season ends at 7-14.
I thought the Pirates did exceptionally well for only having 8 girls out for the team.
Wins over Laurel-Concord-Coleridge and Wakefield-Allen were big, in my opinion, with those two schools being two and three classes larger than Emerson-Hubbard.
Gentrup led the team in scoring this season as she averaged 16 points a game. Addison Mackling was second, averaging 9 points a game this past season.
Daum led the way in rebounds with 162 while Schock and Gentrup totaled 156 and 109, respectively.
Emerson-Hubbard says goodbye to Gentrup, Daum, Stephanie Ferusca, and Mackling.
Key returners for the Pirates next year assuming they're able to field a team are Madison Gunderson and Schock.
Hopefully Emerson-Hubbard has enough girls to field a team next year as I mentioned.
Right now the Pirates only have four returning players so hopefully there are some incoming freshmen and transfers who can help out next year.
It will be interesting to see what happens with this program moving forward.
Emerson-Hubbard is graduating some good talent so you have to wonder how competitive the Pirates will be next season from an experience standpoint.
It's hard to say what next year will bring for Emerson-Hubbard, but the Pirates just have to prepare and get ready for whatever happens next year.
I hope all four of these returning girls will stay at Emerson-Hubbard to give the Pirates the best chance at fielding a team and having success.
Hopefully Emerson-Hubbard can gain some new players, but a co-op could also potentially happen, who knows.
I think at some point the Pirates are going to have to co-op with somebody, whoever that may be.
I know Emerson-Hubbard tried co-oping with Pender last year so I'm not sure if the Pirates would revisit and try the Pendragons again?
I wouldn't think they would this soon, but who knows.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the offseason with Emerson-Hubbard.
