Winnebago Boys go 1-2 in last three regular season games; Girls go 2-2 in last four games
The Winnebago Boys Basketball Team went 1-2 in their last three regular season games, falling 51-46 at home to Wakefield last Tuesday night, and then losing 67-54 to Lower Brule, SD in Crow Creek, SD last Saturday, before topping GACC 75-57 at home Friday night.
Winnebago led the Trojans 10-8 at the end of one. Wakefield won the 2nd quarter 15-12 to go up 23-22 at halftime.
The Indians won the 3rd quarter 9-8 to tie the game at 31 at the end of three.
The Trojans outscored Winnebago 20-15 in the 4th quarter.
Ed Payer had 15 points while TJ Frenchman totaled 13. Jarius Bass-Earth added 8 rebounds.
Good way to end the regular season with the win over the Bluejays.
The Indians (10-9) are the No. 1 seed in the C1-7 Sub-District at Norfolk High and will play either Norfolk Catholic or O'Neill in the Semifinals on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
Winnebago beat the Eagles by 14 in the regular season and then lost at home by 20 to the Knights the very next game.
I feel the Indians can definitely do well in this Sub-District and advance to the Sub-District Final and Sub-State, but it won't be easy.
If the Knights beat the Eagles they're going to be pretty tough I feel.
Winning that last regular season game had to be a big deal for the team and seniors though.
Winnebago has to come out and be ready to smash and be on top of their game come Tuesday evening.
The Indians have to play out of their minds and play their hearts out as well.
Pierce and Wayne are the other two teams in this Sub-District so things are truly wide open.
Winnebago has to feel good about their chances of winning and advancing on to the Sub-District Final and Sub-State.
The Indians have to feel confident in that they can get the job done and move on.
Winnebago can't let the word upset creep into their mind at all.
Lots of people are probably thinking a team like Norfolk Catholic or Pierce could win this Sub-District, and they could, but the Indians have to believe it is going to be them.
Winnebago has to take the court expecting to win and be successful.
The Indians have to have a good day of practice and preparation on Monday, and must get ready to make another postseason run and final push.
This is it for the seniors so they have to revert back to last year's run to the State Championship game run and make their own run and way this season.
Winnebago has their work cut out for them in this Sub-District, but I feel they can definitely come out of it and make Sub-State.
Tuesday night's game is set to start at 5:00 p.m.
The Winnebago Girls went 2-2 in their last four games, downing Wakefield-Allen 62-59 at home last Tuesday night before losing 82-75 to Lower Brule, SD at Crow Creek, SD last Saturday, and then beating Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 58-35 in the C2-7 Sub-District Play-In Game at Wayne Monday night, before losing 40-39 to Ponca in Tuesday night's Semifinals.
The Trojans led the Indians 12-10 after one. Both teams scored 15 points in the 2nd quarter, and the score was 27-25 at halftime in favor of Wakefield-Allen.
Winnebago outscored the Trojans 24-9 in the 3rd quarter to pull in front 49-36 at the end of three.
Wakefield-Allen outscored the Indians 23-13 in the 4th quarter.
Jayla Price led the way with 13 points while Kae Earth had 12 points and 8 rebounds. Madeline Cleveland chipped in 11 points and 8 rebounds while Natasha Deal had 7 points. Keisha Snyder posted 11 rebounds.
The Indians led 17-11 at the end of the first quarter. Lower Brule won the 2nd quarter 19-13 to make it a 30-all game at halftime.
Both teams scored 18 points in the 3rd quarter, and the game was tied at 48 at the end of three.
Both teams put up 22 points in the 4th quarter, and the score was tied at 70 at the end of regulation.
Lower Brule outlasted Winnebago 12-5 in the extra session.
Snyder had a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds while Price notched 18 points. Earth added 17 points and 7 rebounds while Cleveland chipped in 7 points and 7 rebounds.
The Indians led the Bears 17-7 at the end of one. Winnebago outscored Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 13-6 in the 2nd quarter to take a 30-13 lead into the locker room.
The Indians won the 3rd quarter 11-9 to go up 41-22 at the end of three.
Winnebago won the 4th quarter 17-13.
Snyder had 20 points to lead all scorers and added 7 rebounds. Price totaled 15 points while Deal had 12. Cleveland chipped in 7 points and 11 rebounds.
Ponca went up 20-9 at the end of one before Winnebago outscored them 17-3 in the 2nd quarter to take a 26-23 lead into the locker room.
Ponca won the 3rd quarter 9-8 to make it a 34-32 game at the end of three.
Ponca won the 4th quarter 8-5.
Price had 14 points while Snyder totaled 8. Deal added 8 rebounds while Cleveland recorded 7.
I thought Winnebago came on strong the last six games and made a statement that they're a team to be reckoned with in the future.
The Indians end the season at 8-12.
Big wins came over Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (3 times), Lutheran High Northeast, and Wakefield-Allen.
I really think there's a lot of good talent on this team that will make Winnebago a force to be reckoned with in the future.
Price was the team's leading scorer at 12 points a game while Snyder averaged 11. Earth and Cleveland each averaged 8 points a game.
Snyder led the way in rebounds with 137 while Earth and Cleveland notched 121 and 119, respectively.
The Indians part ways with Earth, Shaylee Kearnes, Alexandria Neff, and Daelyn Zagurski.
These girls were a big part of Winnebago Basketball the past four years, and will be missed without a doubt.
The Indians have to be excited about next year though given who all returns.
Key returners for Winnebago include Snyder, Deal, Price, Tia YellowThunder, Cleveland, Jaidan Payer, and Kiana Lewis.
I think the Indians have to be excited about the core group that returns next season.
I look for Snyder, Deal, Price, and Cleveland to do really big things for Winnebago next year.
The returning players and newcomers have to wake up everyday ready to play basketball and be gym rats.
Getting in the gym over the summer and playing basketball at the outdoor court against whoever would both be good things for the Indians, in my opinion.
Winnebago has to take part in as many team camps, summer leagues, open gyms, and offseason workouts as possible.
Next season starts now for the Indians.
Winnebago has to get after it as much as possible this offseason, and be ready to do big things next year.
Getting out in the community and taking part in events and little kids camps and things of that nature would be good for the Indians too I feel.
