Stanton Boys and Girls lose EHC Consolation Games

The Stanton Boys Basketball Team lost 40-39 to Pender at Twin River in an East Husker Conference Tournament Consolation game Friday night.

The Mustangs led the Pendragons 15-9 at the end of one, and won the 2nd quarter 9-8 to go up 24-17 at halftime.

Pender outscored Stanton 11-3 in the 3rd quarter to pull in front 28-27 at the end of three.

Both teams scored 12 points in the 4th quarter.

Sam Bates led the way with 18 points while Marcus Spotanski registered 10 points and 11 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Nathan Arens added 7 points and 9 rebounds.

Tough loss and pill to swallow for the Mustangs losing on a late shot and everything.

Stanton (5-15) hosts Clarkson/Leigh (5-12) Thursday night.

The Patriots lost 55-54 at home to Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Tuesday night on a buzzer beater.

Both teams are coming off heartbreaking losses so something has to give in this one.

This should be a close, hard fought game that comes down to the wire.

I look for both teams to play well and really get after one another.

The way Clarkson/Leigh has looked and played lately though makes them tough.

Stanton is on a 6-game losing streak, and has to try and find a way to get back on track.

The Mustangs have this game against the Patriots, and then are at a surging Emerson-Hubbard team next week.

Stanton can certainly win and be successful against both opponents though, in my opinion.

Both teams are D-1 so the Mustangs figure to have a bit of an advantage being a C-2 school and all.

Stanton could really use wins Thursday and next Friday though.

Heading into Sub-Districts on a two-game winning streak is best case scenario for the Mustangs, and they have to go out there and make it happen.

Stanton can definitely win both too, they just have to find ways to win close games.

The Mustangs played tough both tournament games, they just weren't able to come away with a win.

Perhaps Stanton will find a way to win Thursday and next Friday.

If the Mustangs can kick the offense into high gear they should have a chance to do just that.

The defense is there, now it's simply a matter of getting the offense on par.

Clarkson/Leigh struggles defensively so we'll see if Stanton's offense can catch fire against them.

The Mustangs don't have many more opportunities to get back on track so they have to find a way to do so Thursday night and next Friday.

Stanton is in a tough Sub-District too so they need lots of momentum heading into the postseason.

The Stanton Girls lost 58-48 at BRLD Thursday night in an East Husker Conference Tournament Consolation game in Lyons.

The Wolverines led 14-11 after one. Both teams scored 15 points in the 2nd quarter, and the halftime score was 29-26 in favor of BRLD.

The Mustangs won the 3rd quarter 10-8 to make it a 37-36 game at the end of three.

The Wolverines outscored Stanton 21-12 in the 4th quarter.

Jessie Brandl had 14 points while Jaiden Hartl totaled 12 points and 9 rebounds. Bree Burtwhistle added 8 points.

Tough 4th quarter loss for the Mustangs. Stanton was right there through 3 quarters.

The Mustangs (13-7) host Clarkson/Leigh (18-3) Thursday night.

The Patriots beat Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family 52-47 in the 3rd place game of the Conference Tournament at CCC in Columbus on Saturday.

Clarkson/Leigh defeated Stanton 34-27 in the EHC Tournament Quarterfinals at West Point-Beemer last Monday night.

The Mustangs' biggest thing right now is learning how to close out ball games.

Stanton has lost their last couple of games in the 4th quarter.

The Mustangs need to reverse that, and find a way to win Thursday night and Friday against Norfolk Catholic.

Sub-District play starts next week, and a couple of wins could really get the momentum going for Stanton I feel.

I think the Mustangs have a fairly good shot to beat the Patriots this time around, but Clarkson/Leigh is playing really good basketball right now so it doesn't figure to be easy.

Stanton is going to be the 3 seed in Sub-Districts playing Battle Creek so we'll see if these two teams end up playing each other again.

I think they very well could, and if that's the case that's the game that will matter the most.

The Mustangs need this one though to give themselves some positive momentum heading into the postseason.

I think Stanton needs to win both final regular season contests to give themselves the best chance at having postseason success.

I think the Mustangs are more likely to do something in the postseason if they close out the regular season with two wins as opposed to any other result.

Stanton can definitely get back in the Sub-State Picture with a couple of wins this week, but a loss in Sub-Districts could very well do them in.

The Mustangs have to play with a sense of urgency and purpose Thursday and Friday nights.

Stanton has to play as if their season is on the line and as if there is no tomorrow.

We're nearly to the very end of the season, and the Mustangs have to make their final push now.
