GACC Boys lose to Norfolk Catholic and Pierce; Girls down Pender, fall to Pierce
The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Boys Basketball Team lost 62-45 at Norfolk Catholic Tuesday night before falling 49-44 at home to Pierce Thursday night.
The Knights led the Bluejays 14-13 after one, and outscored GACC 20-12 in the 2nd quarter to take a 34-25 lead into the locker room.
Norfolk Catholic won the 3rd quarter 16-11 to go up 50-36 at the end of three.
The Knights won the 4th quarter 12-9.
Ben Ulrich led the way with 15 points while Casey Doernemann notched 10.
GACC led Pierce 13-10 after one, and outscored them 15-6 in the 2nd quarter to go up 28-16 at halftime.
Pierce outscored GACC 17-7 in the 3rd quarter to make it a 35-33 game at the end of three.
Pierce outscored GACC 16-9 in the 4th quarter to make up the final score.
Adam Reeson paced GACC with 13 points and had 7 rebounds while Jared Minnick totaled 8 points and 9 rebounds. Ulrich added 8 points while Doernemann pulled down 10 rebounds.
A valiant effort from GACC in the first half against Pierce, but Pierce simply turned things on in the 2nd half.
GACC (3-15) takes on Fremont Bergan (12-7) on the road Saturday.
The Knights lost 64-58 at Boys Town last Friday night.
Bergan is good, they're always good, and figure to be a really tough test for the Bluejays.
I think these final two games, this one against the Knights, and next Friday's regular season finale at Winnebago, will be good tough tests for GACC heading into the postseason.
I think the games will give the Bluejays a taste of what they will see and face in Sub-Districts.
GACC unofficially will be in the bunny bracket game against Walthill next Monday in the C2-5 Sub-District at Pender.
The Bluejays have to use these games against the Knights and Indians to prepare for the pending matchup with the Blujays.
If GACC is to extend their season in Sub-Districts they will have to upset the best.
As they say to be the best you have to beat the best, and that certainly holds true for the Bluejays.
Playing Bergan in Fremont will not be easy, but GACC has to go in there fearless and ready to play.
The Bluejays have to expect to win, and must be on top of their game.
GACC has to have that expectation of winning and a killer instinct to get the job done.
The Bluejays have to play up to their capability and potential, and give the Knights everything they could ever want and handle.
I look for GACC to build off the good things they did in the first half against Pierce.
The Bluejays just have to learn how to finish games.
This is a young team, and I think they will do that at some point, but there's never a better time than the present to do it.
Another opportunity awaits GACC on Saturday, and so the Bluejays have to go in there and give it everything they have.
GACC simply has to find a way to turn these close losses into wins.
The GACC Girls won 74-62 at home over Pender Tuesday night before falling 56-38 at home to Pierce Thursday night.
The Pendragons led the Bluejays 19-14 after one before GACC outscored Pender 23-11 in the 2nd quarter to take a 37-30 halftime lead.
GACC won the 3rd quarter 16-13 to increase their advantage to 53-43 at the end of three.
The Bluejays won the 4th quarter 21-19.
GACC and Pierce were nodded up at 12 at the end of one. Pierce outscored GACC 14-5 in the 2nd quarter to take a 26-17 lead into the locker room.
Pierce won the 3rd quarter 13-7 to lead 39-24 at the end of three.
Pierce took the 4th quarter as well 17-14.
Marissa Hunke paced GACC with 12 points while Brenna Rief totaled 8.
Nice win for GACC Tuesday night, but a really tough loss to Pierce Thursday night.
GACC (14-8) takes on BRLD (14-7) Tuesday night in the C2-5 Sub-District at Pender in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.
The Wolverines blasted Wisner-Pilger 67-31 on the road Tuesday night.
This is it for Central Catholic.
The Bluejays' 21-year streak of making the State Tournament is on the line.
A loss to BRLD may knock GACC out of a Sub-State berth.
Right now the Bluejays are 16th in power points in C-2 so a win over the Wolverines and a loss to most likely Oakland-Craig could still get GACC a Sub-State Game.
The Bluejays have to play their hearts out and fight for their season Tuesday night.
GACC has had so much great success over the years, and it would be really strange not to see the Bluejays down at the State Tournament this year.
BRLD is a really good team though.
The Wolverines have a lot of talent and a lot of girls who can play.
GACC is going to need to bring their best game Tuesday night if they want to win.
The Bluejays can definitely do it too.
GACC has to be confident heading into this one, and has to take the fight to the Wolverines for four quarters.
The Bluejays have to play hard, smart, and must be aggressive offensively and defensively.
GACC has to be all business, and has to take things very seriously.
There is no such thing as a moral victory at this point or for the Bluejays in general.
This is do or die time for GACC.
Lose on Tuesday and the season could very well be over.
Win on Tuesday and the Bluejays live and fight to see another day.
Tuesday's game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. on the Bull.
