GACC Boys fall at Fremont Bergan; Girls knock off BRLD in Sub-Districts

The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Boys Basketball Team lost 81-56 at Fremont Bergan on Saturday.

The Bluejays led the Knights 18-16 after one before Bergan outscored GACC 22-7 in the 2nd quarter to take a 38-25 lead into the locker room.

Bergan won the 3rd quarter 25-18 to go up 63-43 at the end of three.

The Knights won the 4th quarter 18-13.

Ben Ulrich led the way with 22 points while Jared Minnick posted 9 points and 7 rebounds. Nate Niewohner and Casey Doernemann notched 8 points apiece.

Good start to the game for the Bluejays, but the 2nd quarter was simply too much for GACC to overcome.

The Bluejays (3-16) round out the regular season at Winnebago (9-9) Friday night.

The Indians lost 67-54 to Lower Brule, SD in Crow Creek, SD on Saturday.

Winnebago also lost 51-46 at home to Wakefield last Tuesday night.

GACC definitely has a tough and tall task in front of them.

The Indians aren't the same team they have been in recent years, but they are still good and tough.

Playing and winning at Winnebago is never easy either.

The Bluejays take on Walthill in the C2-5 Sub-District Play-In-Game at Pender Monday night.

The Blujays beat the Indians by 6 early in the season so this game figures to be a good measuring stick for GACC.

The Bluejays have to go into Winnebago with that can't and won't and refuse to lose attitude.

GACC has to go in there and expect to win and dominate.

Both programs have such high standards, and it should be a good, competitive ball game.

I think the Bluejays can go in there and make things interesting at the very least if they play up to their potential.

GACC has shown some signs this year that they can win close games and get over the hump and get back to their winning ways of the past at some point.

Going into Winnebago and winning is not easy, but the Bluejays have to believe it can happen, and go up there and play a good game.

GACC can't be scared of or intimidated by the Indians. The Bluejays can't back down from Winnebago whatsoever.

GACC has to try and slow down the likes of Ed Payer and TJ Frenchman.

Those two combined for 28 points against the Trojans, and will look to go off on the Bluejays I'm willing to bet.

GACC has to try and win a close game on the road. It almost happened at Wayne and Battle Creek, and did happen at O'Nell, so the potential and possibility definitely exists for the Bluejays I would say.

The GACC Girls knocked off BRLD 71-51 in the C2-5 Sub-District Semifinals from Pender in action aired on 107.9 the Bull Tuesday night.

The Bluejays led 20-13 at the end of one before the Wolverines won the 2nd quarter 23-20 to make it a 40-36 game at halftime in favor of GACC.

The Bluejays outscored BRLD 18-5 in the 3rd quarter to go up 58-41 at the end of three.

GACC won the 4th quarter 13-10.

Angela Jansen posted a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds while Sophia Hass registered 15 points and 9 rebounds. Brenna Rief added 14 points while Marissa Hunke and Reece Snodgrass posted 8 each.

Great win for the Bluejays. GACC lived to fight and see another day.

The Bluejays (15-8) take on Oakland-Craig (19-3) in the C2-5 Sub-District final from Pender Thursday night in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.

The Knights defeated Wisner-Pilger 59-33 in Tuesday's Semifinals.

GACC has to really get after Oakland-Craig defensively.

The Bluejays shutdown the likes of Paige Peters for BRLD, and have to try and limit Dacey Nelson and Kennedy Benne as much as possible.

Natalia McNeill and Mya Guzinski have proven they can really aid in the scoring column as well, but GACC's main focus has to be on Nelson and Benne.

You can bet the Bluejays will have a good game plan and execute it.

It's as if GACC is a whole new team in Sub-Districts. I must say I was very impressed with the Bluejays' performance Tuesday night.

With that said, it's another do or die situation for GACC on Thursday.

Win and the Bluejays make Sub-State. Lose and GACC's 21-year streak of making state ends.

I feel the Bluejays definitely have what it takes to pull off the upset though.

If GACC plays the way they did Tuesday night they're going to be really difficult for anyone to beat.

You can bet the Bluejays will give the Knights their best shot and all they can want and handle.

Oakland-Craig is a great team though, and will be very tough to stop and beat.

GACC has won big games in the past though, and this game is no different for the Bluejays.

GACC has to come out serious like they did against the Wolverines, and get multiple scoring contributions from across the board.

The Bluejays have to really get after things with their press and try and create turnovers and steals.

The more layup and fastbreak opportunities GACC gets the better off they will be.

It should be a dandy of a ball game Thursday night, and I'm very anxious to see how everything unfolds.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on the Bull.
