Stanton Boys lose to Clarkson/Leigh, beat Emerson-Hubbard to end regular season; Girls go 0-3 in last three games
The Stanton Boys Basketball Team fell 55-48 at home Clarkson/Leigh last Thursday night before winning 45-39 at Emerson-Hubbard Friday night to close out the regular season.
The Patriots and Mustangs were tied at 10 after one before Stanton doubled up Clarkson/Leigh 10-5 in the 2nd quarter to take a 20-15 lead into the locker room.
The Patriots and Mustangs both scored 15 points in the 3rd quarter, and the score was 35-30 at the end of three in favor of Stanton.
Clarkson/Leigh outscored the Mustangs 25-13 in the money quarter to come out on top.
Nathan Arens had a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds for Stanton while Marcus Spotanski registered 12 points. TJ Larson added 11 points while Sam Bates notched 7.
The Mustangs led the Pirates 9-5 at the end of one. Emerson-Hubbard won the 2nd quarter 21-17 to tie the game at 26 at halftime.
Both teams scored 6 points in the 3rd quarter, and the score was tied at 32 at the end of three.
Stanton outscored the Pirates 13-7 in the 4th quarter.
Spotanski had 13 points and 7 rebounds while Parker Krusemark totaled 8 points. Arens added 7 points and 7 rebounds while Larson recorded 7 points.
Strong end to the regular season for the Mustangs after losing to the Patriots last week.
Stanton (6-16) takes on Wisner-Pilger (14-9) in the C2-6 Sub-District Play-In-Game at Norfolk Catholic Monday night in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.
The Gators routed Madison 83-53 at home Friday night.
Wisner-Pilger beat Stanton 58-49 in Wisner in the regular season.
This figures to be a game that can go either way given the nature of this rivalry and the fact the two teams played close the first time.
Both teams stumbled at the end of the regular season, but rebounded to win their regular season finales so it will be interesting to see what happens.
The Gators have a lot of seniors so that should make for a tough challenge for the Mustangs to go up against.
Stanton has to get jacked and fired up for this game though.
The season is on the line for the Mustangs, and this is do or die time.
This is what you work and play for if you are Stanton.
The Mustangs have an opportunity to knock off a rival and advance to play Wakefield at 6:00 p.m. in Tuesday night's Semifinals.
Stanton gave the Trojans a game too so I fully expect the Mustangs to compete well and hold their own in this Sub-District.
This is a stacked Sub-District with a lot of good competition in it.
Stanton definitely has their work cut out for them if they want to win it, but anything can certainly happen and is possible.
Crazy upsets happen this time of year, and I wouldn't be shocked if the Mustangs defeated the Gators and advanced on to play Wakefield.
Things figure to be tight and close throughout. It should be a good game to say the least.
Stanton has to try and pound the rock inside to Bates and Arens, and take it right at Jayden Raabe and Caden Schweers and others.
The Mustangs also have to try and solve Wisner-Pilger's patented 1-3-1 zone defense.
Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on the Bull.
The Stanton Girls lost 31-27 at home to Clarkson/Leigh last Thursday night and then fell 54-51 at home to Norfolk Catholic last Friday night to close out the regular season before losing 51-41 to Battle Creek in the C2-6 Sub-District Semifinals at Norfolk High Tuesday night.
The Mustangs led the Patriots 9-0 after one. Clarkson/Leigh won the 2nd quarter 11-6 to make it a 15-11 game at halftime in favor of Stanton.
The Patriots won the 3rd quarter 7-6 to cut the deficit to 3 at 21-18 at the end of three.
Clarkson/Leigh outscored the Mustangs 13-6 in the 4th quarter.
Jaiden Hartl totaled 9 points while Jessie Brandl had 7 points and 8 rebounds.
The Knights led 11-9 after one, and won the 2nd quarter 16-13 to go up 27-22 at halftime.
The Mustangs won the 3rd quarter 12-11 to make it a 38-34 ball game at the end of three in favor of Norfolk Catholic.
Stanton won the 4th quarter 17-16.
Bree Burtwhistle had a game-high 22 points for the Mustangs while Hartl notched 11. Brandl added 10 points and 10 rebounds, good enough for a double-double.
Stanton led the Braves 7-5 after one before Battle Creek outscored the Mustangs 14-8 in the 2nd quarter to take a 19-15 lead into the locker room.
The Braves won the 3rd quarter 16-12 to go up 35-27 at the end of three.
Battle Creek won the 4th quarter 16-14.
Burtwhistle and Hartl finished with 13 points apiece while Brandl tallied 12 points and 7 rebounds.
Tough end to what was a great run for this senior class.
Stanton ends the season at 13-10.
The Mustangs started the season off slow and then picked things up and appeared to have things figured out midseason before struggling at the end of the season, losing their last five games.
I'm sure Stanton expected to still be playing right now and didn't expect the season to end the way it did.
Big wins came over North Bend Central, Pender, O'Neill, West Holt, BRLD, and Battle Creek.
As you can see the Mustangs beat some great teams this year, they just weren't able to gain enough consistency to make a run.
Stanton was led in scoring by Brandl, who averaged 12 points a game. Hartl averaged 10 while Burtwhistle and Liz Christensen averaged 9 and 7, respectively.
Rebounding wise Brandl had 181 rebounds on the season while Hartl notched 129.
The Mustangs say goodbye to Brandl, Burtwhistle, Hartl, and Christensen.
These were four very good and decorated players for Stanton over the last four years, and in Christensen's case the last two.
Key returners include Sylvia Cunningham, Ellie Locke, and Jasmine Kment.
It's hard saying what next year will bring for the Mustangs, but I feel there a lot of up and coming players who can bring Stanton back to where they were last year and in the two years before that.
The Mustangs have a lot of work to do to get back to the top before next season rolls around.
Replacing the four seniors they lose doesn't figure to be easy, but it appears there is some good talent coming up.
Stanton figures to be fairly young next year, but I'm sure the Mustangs will have plenty of players ready to leave their mark on this program.
Stanton has to get after things as soon as possible, and start working towards next season as soon as they get the opportunity.
I know a lot of these Girls do Track and Volleyball as well, but the Mustangs could benefit from a great offseason of basketball, in my opinion.
How Stanton does next season depends on how hard they work and how much ball they play this offseason I would say.
