Bancroft-Rosalie Boys beat Emerson-Hubbard; Girls finish week 0-3

The Bancroft-Rosalie Boys Basketball team beat Emerson-Hubbard 59-50 on the road Tuesday night to improve to 3-0 on the season. Head Coach Cory Meyer says he wasn't sure what to expect coming into the season.

"I just didn't know. We lose three seniors and then you have to have two younger kids step in that aren't used to playing varsity ball probably at all step into the starting position. And then three coming in off the bench to sub. And it's just there's a lot of inexperience."

Emerson-Hubbard held a one-point advantage over the Panthers at the end of one, 14-13. Bancroft-Rosalie won the second quarter 18-11 to go up 31-25 at halftime.

The Panthers outscored the Pirates 13-10 in the third quarter to lead 44-35 at the end of three.

Both teams scored 15 fourth quarter points.

Trent Gatewood had a team-high 16 points. Mario Aldrich notched 11 points while Kenyan Lovejoy had 11 points and 11 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Dayne Wortman added 10 points and 7 rebounds.

The Panthers played decent basketball Tuesday night. The game was probably a little too close for comfort, but the main thing is Bancroft-Rosalie won the game.

The 3-0 Panthers square off with 3-0 Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family on the road Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs beat Shelby-Rising City 54-38 at home on Saturday.

Meyer says his team needs to get out and run given the similarities between the two squads.

"It'll be a really interesting matchup. Very similar teams, both of us. And I would have to definitely say that they're much improved since last year. They love to run the court, and I think that's what we need to do as a team is to try to slow them down and not let them get the fast break layups."

Based on that, this should be an entertaining, high flying, high scoring affair.

I definitely think Bancroft-Rosalie can win, all they have to do is play up to their potential.

The Panthers played really well in their first two games of the season, and must get back to that. Having a whole week of practice should help Bancroft-Rosalie when they take the floor Tuesday night.

This is a big, important game for the Panthers. Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family is the one real road block left in Bancroft-Rosalie having a perfect season heading into the Holiday Tournament.

I think the Panthers will win, but Bancroft-Rosalie has to be on top of their game. The team that showed up against Lyons-Decatur Northeast and Omaha Christian Academy is the team that needs to show up Tuesday night.

Tuesday night's game is set to begin after the girls game on 107.9 the Bull. The girls game is scheduled to start at 6:15.

The Bancroft-Rosalie Girls Basketball team lost all three games last week, falling 65-40 at Emerson-Hubbard Tuesday night, 50-36 at Hartington Cedar Catholic Thursday night, and 50-39 at Pender on Saturday. Head Coach Rod Peters says it has been tough sledding so far.

"It has been a slow start. Looking at the schedule before the season started I knew that the four teams we would be playing so far were going to be tough teams. And for a lot of the games we've competed in for at least a half. And we've had a major letdown in maybe the second half or the second and third quarters."

Emerson-Hubbard led the Panthers 18-16 after one. Bancroft-Rosalie won the second quarter 16-13 to take a one-point lead at 32-31 into the locker room.

The Pirates outscored the Panthers 22-2 in the third quarter to make it a 53-34 game at the end of three.

Emerson-Hubbard doubled up Bancroft-Rosalie 12-6 in the fourth quarter.

Paige Peters led the way with 13 points. Tess Nottleman notched 10 points and 7 rebounds while Justice Johnson recorded 7 points.

The Trojans tripled up the Panthers 15-5 in the first quarter. Both teams scored 12 points in the second quarter, and the halftime score was 27-17 in favor of Hartington Cedar Catholic.

The Trojans won the third quarter 13-11, and the score at the end of three was 40-28 with Hartington Cedar Catholic leading.

The Trojans outscored Bancroft-Rosalie 10-8 in the fourth quarter.

Take away the first quarter and the Panthers were right there.

Vicki Gatzmeyer had a team-high 16 points. Nottleman added 10 while Kelcee Bacon totaled 7 rebounds.

Bancroft-Rosalie led the Pendragons 13-10 after one. Pender won the second quarter 12-7 to take a 22-20 lead into the locker room.

The Pendragons outscored the Panthers 16-6 in the third quarter to go up 38-26 at the end of three.

Bancroft-Rosalie put up 13 fourth quarter points compared to 12 for Pender.

Nottleman compiled 8 points and 8 rebounds while Gatzmeyer totaled 8 points. Tiahna Bonneau chipped in 9 rebounds while Hannah Flock notched 7.

The Panthers competed well against Hartington Cedar Catholic and Pender. The basketball gods just weren't kind to Bancroft-Rosalie.

The Panthers (0-4) look for their first win of the season Tuesday night when they take on Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family on the road. Peters says things won't be easy.

"Yeah it'll be another tough matchup. They have 6'0 Tarrin Beller, very athletic girl."

Beller is the Bulldogs' leading scorer at 19 points per game.

In the interview I did with Peters, he talked about holding Beller to under 15 points.

He was optimistic about that happening, saying the Panthers limited her to 4 points a year ago.

Bancroft-Rosalie definitely needs to limit her production again. The Panthers need to make other players beat them and take some chances with forcing Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family to hit from the outside.

The Bulldogs are good, but they are beatable. Shelby/Rising City nearly beat Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, and Howells-Dodge defeated them by 19.

Bancroft-Rosalie has to play with a positive attitude and believe.

Peters talked about how the girls have been down, but thinks a win could springboard them to play better.

A win has to come at some point for the Panthers, and why not Tuesday night? It would be a perfect time to pick up a big win as it would give Bancroft-Rosalie a lot of power points.

This game is a big deal for the Panthers. They need to play better than they have if they want to win, especially on the offensive end of the floor.

The game is set to tip-off at 6:15 Tuesday night. It can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.
