Wisner-Pilger Boys lose to Stanton, beat Tekamah-Herman; Girls down both

The Wisner-Pilger Boys are 1-1 in their last two games, losing 59-55 at Stanton on Thursday before beating Tekamah-Herman 79-33 on the road Friday night.

The Gators led the Mustangs 17-15 after one. Stanton outscored Wisner-Pilger 22-13 in the second quarter to go up 37-30 at halftime.

The Gators won the third quarter 13-10 to make it a 47-43 game at the end of three.

Both teams scored 12 fourth quarter points.

Wisner-Pilger led 19-3 at the end of one against the Tigers. The Gators outscored Tekamah-Herman 28-10 in the second quarter to lead 47-13 at halftime.

The Tigers won the third quarter 17-12 to make it a 59-30 game at the end of three.

Wisner-Pilger outscored Tekamah-Herman 20-3 in the fourth quarter.

The Gators played a great game against the Tigers. Wisner-Pilger dominated from start to finish, and turned in their best performance of the season.

The Gators (2-2) battle Oakland-Craig (3-2) at home Thursday night.

The Knights lost 57-56 at home against Howells-Dodge on Saturday after beating Pender 78-36 at home Friday night.

Oakland-Craig is a good team, and Wisner-Pilger is going to have to play very well to knock off the Knights.

The Gators have to watch out for Carter Thiele, Garrett Seagren, Cody Mace, and Cole Mitchell.

Wisner-Pilger has to buckle down defensively, and get after things on that end of the floor.

The Gators also have to be efficient offensively. Oakland-Craig has a lot of offensive firepower so Wisner-Pilger has to be able to keep up with the Knights on offense.

This should be a great game between two fairly equal teams. I think the Gators can win, but it won't be easy.

Wisner-Pilger has to play a complete game if they want to come away with the W.

The Gators have to use the momentum they gained from the Tekamah-Herman win and allow it to lead to more success.

I like Wisner-Pilger's chances of winning if they can make timely shots, knock down free throws, and get key stops.

It all comes down to coming through in the clutch, and both teams could really use a close win.

I look for Thursday night's game to be decided by seven points or less.

The Wisner-Pilger Girls went 2-0 last week, knocking off Stanton 53-50 in double overtime on the road Thursday night, and winning 45-29 at Tekamah-Herman Friday night.

The Gators led the Mustangs 6-5 at the end of one.

Gators Coach Chuck Ross says after a slow first quarter...things started heating up.

"If I looked correctly they shot 42 threes. And they were cold early. Then they kind of lit the place up. I told the girls we got to answer when they start hitting cause a good three-point shooting team, when they get hot, they stay hot. And not much you can do with a hand in their face. But I think we did a pretty good job of answering. We didn't shoot many threes, but we answered with twos or some free throws."

Stanton won the second quarter 14-11 to go up 19-17 at halftime.

Wisner-Pilger outscored the Mustangs 11-8 in the third quarter to lead 28-27 at the end of three.

Stanton notched 9 fourth quarter points compared to 8 for the Gators to make the game 36-all at the end of regulation.

Both teams scored 8 points in the first overtime, and the score was tied at 44 at the end of the first overtime.

Wisner-Pilger outlasted the Mustangs 9-6 in the second overtime.

Bailey Batenhorst finished with a team-high 19 points. Maci Batenhorst and Alexis Heller added 9 each. Sydney Bradfield registered 7.

The Gators led the Tigers 9-7 after one. Wisner-Pilger won the second quarter 14-9 to lead 23-16 at halftime.

The Gators outscored Tekamah-Herman 14-4 in the third quarter to make it a 37-20 game at the end of three.

The Tigers put up 9 fourth quarter points compared to 8 for Wisner-Pilger.

Bailey Batenhorst racked up 15 points while Heller and Lexi Knust scored 8 and 7, respectively.

The Gators are playing at a really high level right now. I must say I am surprised by this start from Wisner-Pilger. The Gators have no doubt turned some heads in the early season.

Wisner-Pilger (3-1) hosts Oakland-Craig (4-1) Thursday night.

The Knights lost 43-35 at home to Howells-Dodge Saturday night after beating Pender 54-49 at home Friday night.

Oakland-Craig is a really good team, and the Gators have to be wary of Dacey Nelson, Brynn and Bailey Charling, Olivia Bures, Emma Reinert, and Melanie Snader.

The Knights have multiple players that can score and beat teams on any given night.

So do the Gators though.

This should be a great game between two fairly equal teams.

There's no reason to think the game won't be close.

I think this game could be a lot like the Stanton game for Wisner-Pilger in that it is close throughout. I'm not suggesting it goes to double overtime, but a game decided by five points or less seems very possible.

It all comes down to execution, hard work, determination, and desire.

The Gators have to want it more than Oakland-Craig, and have to will themselves to victory.

Wisner-Pilger has to get after things defensively, and play tight, in your face defense on the Knights.

The Gators have to take a page out of Howells-Dodge's playbook and play suffocating defense.
