Stanton Boys beat Wisner-Pilger, lose to North Bend Central; Girls fall to both
The Stanton Boys won two games ago and lost last time out, defeating Wisner-Pilger 59-55 at home last Thursday night before falling 59-39 at North Bend Central Tuesday night.
The Gators led the Mustangs 17-15 after one. Stanton outscored Wisner-Pilger 22-13 in the second quarter to go up 37-30 at halftime.
The Gators won the third quarter 13-10 to make it a 47-43 game at the end of three.
Both teams scored 12 fourth quarter points.
Kyle Sperl finished with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Mitchael Sieh and Brook Klinetobe had 12 points each. Sieh added 8 rebounds.
North Bend Central took an 11-8 lead over the Mustangs at the end of one. The Tigers won the second quarter 17-11 to take a 28-19 lead into the locker room.
North Bend Central outscored Stanton 15-11 in the third quarter to make it a 43-30 game at the end of three.
The Tigers notched 16 fourth quarter points compared to 9 for the Mustangs.
I'm not sure what happened to Stanton against North Bend Central. The Mustangs had been playing great basketball up to that point.
Stanton (4-1) hosts Wakefield (3-1) Friday night.
The Trojans lost 57-16 at Randolph Tuesday night.
Wakefield is 3-1, but they haven't beaten anybody.
The Mustangs should be able to win even though they lost to the Tigers by 20.
Sperl, Klinetobe, and Sieh have to be on top of their games for Stanton.
The Mustangs have to forget about the loss to North Bend Central, and regroup for the game with the Trojans.
Stanton has a good chance to be 6-1 heading into the Holiday Break, but the Mustangs have to get back to playing the type of basketball they were before the loss to the Tigers.
Stanton has to play at a high level on both ends of the floor, and get after things.
The Mustangs have to play well from start to finish. Stanton can't afford to play sloppy, and let Wakefield hang in there.
Almost every team is going to struggle at some point in the season, and hopefully for the Mustangs, their struggles end Friday night.
Stanton doesn't want to lose two in a row, that would not be good heading into the Pender game on Saturday.
The Mustangs need to win for momentum purposes, among other reasons.
The Stanton Girls are 0-2 in their last two games, losing 53-50 in double overtime at home to Wisner-Pilger last Thursday night and 56-35 at North Bend Central Tuesday night.
Wisner-Pilger outscored the Mustangs 11-8 in the third quarter to lead 28-27 at the end of three.
Stanton notched 9 fourth quarter points compared to 8 for the Gators to make the game 36-all at the end of regulation.
Both teams scored 8 points in the first overtime, and the score was tied at 44 at the end of the first overtime.
Wisner-Pilger outlasted the Mustangs 9-6 in the second overtime.
MacKenzie Brandl had a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Jessie Brandl added 13 points and 7 rebounds while Hiliary Huss totaled 12 points and 7 rebounds. Ali Wade notched 10 rebounds while Bree Burtwhistle had 7.
The Mustangs led North Bend Central 11-7 after one. The Tigers outscored Stanton 14-5 in the second quarter to take a 21-16 lead into the locker room.
North Bend Central won the third quarter 24-10 to go up 45-26 at the end of three.
The Tigers put up 11 fourth quarter points compared to 9 for the Mustangs.
Stanton just continues to struggle for whatever reason. I'm surprised the Mustangs lost to North Bend Central the way they did.
Stanton (1-4) hosts Wakefield (0-4) Friday night.
The Trojans lost 55-25 at Randolph Tuesday night.
Neither team has had the greatest season so far, but I think the Mustangs stand a good chance to win Friday night.
It's a home game, and Wakefield has been beat by double digits in every game this season.
This is a game Stanton needs to win, and win big, to get back on track.
The Mustangs have a big game at Pender on Saturday. It would be a big deal for Stanton to win that game and be 3-4 heading into the Holiday Break.
It hasn't been the best start to the season for the Mustangs, but the good news is there's a lot of time left. Stanton has plenty of time to get things turned around.
This is a big weekend for the Mustangs. Stanton would no doubt like to gain some momentum before the five-day moratorium hits.
And what better way to do that than to win Friday and Saturday.
That has to be the goal for the Mustangs...win both games this weekend.
A split wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, but winning both looks a whole lot better on the record.
We will see what Stanton can do this weekend.
