Winnebago Boys and Girls off to 2-0 starts
The Winnebago Boys picked up right where they left off last season by defeating Homer and Walthill on Thursday and Friday of last week.
The Indians defeated the Knights 96-21 at home and downed the Blujays 79-53 on the road.
Winnebago led Homer 31-9 at the end of one and blanked the Knights 31-0 in the second quarter to lead 62-9 at halftime.
The Indians won the third quarter 17-8 to go up 79-17 at the end of three.
Winnebago outscored Homer 17-4 in the fourth and final quarter.
David Wingett led all scorers with 36 points while Cedrick Blackdeer totaled 13. MaNaPe Cleveland and Aspen Lapointe added 12 each while D'Von Lapointe and Drake Gorrin registered 9 and 7, respectively.
The Indians led Walthill 18-17 after one. Winnebago outscored the Blujays 23-7 in the second quarter to take a 41-24 lead into the locker room.
The Indians won the third quarter 23-14 to go up 64-38 at the end of three. Both teams scored 15 fourth quarter points.
Winnebago played really good basketball last week. Walthill hung with the Indians in the first and fourth quarters, but Winnebago did enough in the middle quarters to win big.
The Indians (2-0) square off with Omaha Nation (1-0) on the road Thursday night.
The Chiefs defeated Santee 72-44 in their season opener on Friday.
Omaha Nation is a good team, and one Winnebago can't afford to take lightly.
The Indians have to play just as well if not better than they did last week.
Wingett, both Lapointe brothers, Gorrin, Cleveland, and Blackdeer all have to score the ball the way they did against Homer.
Winnebago has already gone on the road and won once so winning on the road shouldn't be an issue for the Indians whatsoever.
I look for Winnebago to win and keep the ball rolling. The Indians have scored a lot of points this season, and their offense doesn't appear to be one that can be slowed down.
Winnebago has three tournaments after this before the new year so it would be nice for the Indians to win for momentum and confidence purposes heading into those tournaments I am sure.
Winnebago has to be focused, ready to play, and determined to win.
The Indians can't let anything distract or bother them during the course of the game.
If Winnebago plays the way they have been, they should walk away with a big victory.
The Winnebago Girls are also off to a 2-0 start as the Indians downed Homer 70-46 at home on Thursday and Walthill 68-49 on the road Friday.
The Indians doubled up the Knights 16-8 in the first quarter. Winnebago outscored Homer 19-8 in the second quarter to take a 35-16 lead into the locker room.
The Indians won the third quarter 19-13 to lead 54-29 at the end of three.
The Knights scored 17 fourth quarter points compared to 16 for Winnebago to make up the final score.
Illeana Frenchman led the way with 22 points while Isabel Earth scored 15 points. Jasmin Colvin added 12 points and 8 rebounds.
The Indians led the Blujays 19-11 at the end of one. Winnebago outscored Walthill 24-14 in the second quarter to take a 43-25 lead into the locker room.
The Indians won the third quarter 9-6 to make it a 52-31 game at the end of three.
The Blujays notched 18 fourth quarter points compared to 16 for Winnebago.
Frenchman totaled a team-high 28 points while Colvin notched 13 points and 7 rebounds. Deona Harris recorded 8 points and 9 rebounds while Earth had 7 points and 7 rebounds.
The Indians played really good basketball last week. It was the kind of start to the season Winnebago was hoping for I am sure.
The Indians (2-0) take on Omaha Nation (1-0) on the road Thursday evening.
The Chiefs knocked off Santee 72-21 in their season opener on Friday.
Omaha Nation might be the best team Winnebago will have faced so far this season.
The Indians have to be focused, ready to play, and determined to get the job done.
Winnebago has to play with the attitude that they won't be denied no matter what.
That involves playing with heart, passion, fire, toughness, tenacity, and grit.
The Indians have to be the tougher team on the floor physically and mentally.
Winnebago can't let anyone or anything get in their way of picking up a victory. The Indians have to be the aggressor, and take it to Omaha Nation from start to finish.
Winnebago has played well in the early season. The Indians have to keep it up though. The schedule gets tougher eventually, and so Winnebago has to be as prepared as possible for those tough games in the second half of the season.
The Indians have to simply keep winning to continue to build for the future. This team has been impressive so far, and it has been a thing of beauty. It's early though so this team has to keep getting better.
