Winnebago Boys beat Omaha Nation; Girls lose
The Winnebago Boys defeated Omaha Nation 87-49 on the road Thursday night.
It was a big victory for the Indians, who improved to 3-0 on the season.
Winnebago is taking part in the Lakota Nations Invite in Rapid, City SD Wednesday through Saturday.
I know nothing about the teams playing in this tournament and am not sure who the Indians' first opponent is, but regardless I look for Winnebago to hold their own.
It's good for the Indians to get in a big time tournament outside the state. It will no doubt help prepare them for the rest of the season.
Winnebago has to play their own style of basketball in this tournament like they have all season. Every game needs to be treated with the same importance as any other game would.
The Indians should be able to compete well in this tournament no matter who they play.
I look for Winnebago to have a big showing, and put up some tremendous fights.
This tournament is great exposure for these kids, and will no doubt get the word out that Winnebago basketball is the real deal.
A lot of people in Nebraska are already familiar with what the Indians have done, but now South Dakotans will find out what Rez Ball is all about.
The biggest thing for the Indians is to go out there and play loose and have fun. Winnebago has to play with tremendous heart, pride, and passion, and leave it all out on the floor.
This tournament should help the Indians prepare for the Knight Classic.
The Winnebago Girls lost their first game of the year Thursday night, falling 82-60 at Omaha Nation.
Illeana Frenchman had 26 points to lead the Indians. Kae Earth notched 12 points and 10 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Allie Frenchman added 7 points.
Winnebago had enough offense to win Thursday night, but the Indians' defense let them down.
Winnebago (2-1) gets ready for the Lakota Nations Invite Wednesday through Saturday in Rapid City, SD.
I'm not sure who the Indians play or what sort of teams they will see in this tournament, but one way or another you have to figure Winnebago will be challenged.
That means the Indians must be on top of their game offensively and defensively.
Winnebago was solid defensively in their first two games of the season, but slipped up against the Chiefs.
A lot of that is probably due to the fact that Omaha Nation is a better team than Homer and Walthill, but it still shows that the Indians have to increase their level of play.
Winnebago has to have a good showing and show the state of South Dakota that they can play some ball.
The Indians are a good team, they just have to take their game to the next level. And this tournament presents a perfect opportunity to do just that.
Illeana Frenchman, Earth, and Allie Frenchman all need to have big games for Winnebago. They also need help though.
The Indians need four or five girls scoring in double figures to be a complete team.
It will be interesting to see how Winnebago fares in this tournament. I'm sure the Indians will see some quality teams, which makes for tremendous challenges.
We will see just how good this Winnebago team is, and how they measure up to other teams in this tournament.
