Lyons-Decatur Northeast Boys beat Clarkson/Leigh; Girls beat Patriots and Archbishop Bergan

The Lyons-Decatur Northeast Boys Basketball team has gotten off to a 2-1 start, beating Clarkson/Leigh 51-47 at home last time out. Co-Head Coach Derek Lahm says cooperation and teamwork has been really good.

"We have made some significant strides, and we've been really impressed with our kids' willingness to buy in as well as kind of come together as a team."

The Cougars are led by Alec Anderson, who's averaging 21 points and 11 rebounds per game.

The Cougars led the Patriots 12-9 after one. Clarkson/Leigh won the second quarter 11-10 to make it a 22-20 game at halftime.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast outscored the Cougars 16-14 in the third quarter to lead 38-34 at the end of three.

Both teams scored 13 fourth quarter points.

Anderson had 18 points and 10 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Montana Riecken added 12 points while Cole Christoffersen notched 8 points and 8 rebounds.

The Cougars are off to a great start. It has been the kind of start to the season Lyons-Decatur Northeast was hoping for I am sure.

The Cougars (2-1) host Howells-Dodge (2-4) Friday night.

Lahm says the Jaguars are a good team.

"This is a difficult matchup, and Coach Fischer always has his guys ready to go. They're always typically right there competing to go to state every single year. They've played a tough schedule so far."

Both teams have won two straight games.

Howells-Dodge defeated West Point-Beemer 62-52 at home Tuesday night, and has been on a roll since starting the season 0-4.

So certainly the Jaguars have started to figure some things out.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast has played good team basketball so far this season though, and I look for the Cougars to give Howells-Dodge all they can handle.

I think this will be a close game that goes down to the wire.

I'm not sure if Lyons-Decatur Northeast will win, but I think they have a chance, especially if they play the way they have the last two games.

The Cougars have to get the job done with their defense.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast is 2-0 when holding teams under 50 points, and if the Cougars can hold the Jaguars under 50, they could come out on top.

The Howells-Dodge and Lyons-Decatur Northeast Boys will play after the girls. The girls game is set to start at 6:15 p.m.

The games can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.

The Lyons-Decatur Northeast Girls are 2-0 in their last two games, defeating Clarkson/Leigh 43-28 at home on Saturday, and Archbishop Bergan 68-49 on the road Tuesday night.

The Cougars jumped on the Patriots 14-2 after one. Clarkson/Leigh won the second quarter 9-6 to make it a 20-11 game at halftime.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast outscored the Patriots 9-7 in the third quarter to go up 29-18 at the end of three.

The Cougars notched 14 fourth quarter points compared to 10 for Clarkson/Leigh.

Brianne Haskell totaled a game-high 15 points. Kelly Wakeley added 9 while Lexie Bacon scored 7.

The Knights led 16-11 after one. Lyons-Decatur Northeast won the second quarter 19-11 to take a 30-27 lead into the locker room.

The Cougars doubled up Bergan 20-10 in the third quarter to go up 50-37 at the end of three.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast outscored the Knights 18-12 in the fourth quarter.

Bacon finished with 21 points to lead all scorers. Wakeley notched 13 points and 7 rebounds while Haskell chipped in 11 points and 7 rebounds. Mariah Jesssen totaled 10 points.

The Cougars just continue to get better with every passing game. The win over Bergan was probably Lyons-Decatur Northeast's best win of the season so far.

The Cougars (4-0) host Howells-Dodge (4-2) Friday night.

The Jaguars lost 70-61 at home to West Point-Beemer Tuesday night.

Howells-Dodge has played a really difficult schedule, and certainly Lyons-Decatur Northeast is another tough team on the slate for the Jaguars.

I think the Cougars can definitely win this game given how much they've progressed from game one to game four.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast must slow down Sam Brester though.

The Cougars can't let her go off on them.

There's no doubt Lyons-Decatur Northeast has to get the job done defensively if they want to win.

The Cougars also have to be efficient offensively though.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast has to have a similar effort to what they had against Winside and Bergan.

Multiple players need to score in double figures for the Cougars.

As good as Lyons-Decatur Northeast has played this season, they are probably going to need to play their best game of the year to beat Howells-Dodge.

The Jaguars are the real deal, and the Cougars have to match their intensity if they want to win Friday night.

The game can be heard on 107.9 the Bull. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15.
