Overview:
The Tekamah-Herman Girls expect to have a good season this year as the Tigers bring back all five starters from a year ago.
Tekamah-Herman lost Amy Rogers, who was a part-time starter for the Tigers last year and averaged nearly 4 points a contest.
5th year Head Coach Scott Guzinski feels Marin
Jetensky, 5’11”, Soph, F is a newcomer who could make an impact on this year's team as she is very athletic and can really run and jump.
Guzinski says his squad sticks to one kind of defense mainly, and their offense varies. "We
are primarily a man defense team. What we do on offense largely
depends on what our opponent is doing."
You have to figure having a lot of players who can and perhaps could see the floor will benefit Tekamah-Herman, especially at the end of games when some players might be gassed.
Guzinski says there are a couple of areas where his team has to be better. "We
have to handle pressure and we have to shoot better from the line
(last year we shot 51% as a team)."
Free throws could make a huge difference in games, especially against some of the tougher teams on the Tigers' schedule.
I look for Tekamah-Herman to have a successful season and perhaps win 20 or more games. The Tigers should be a factor in their conference and sub district. Tekamah-Herman is not a team that should be taken lightly. I feel the Tigers are definitely going to be a team to be reckoned with this season.
Season Outlook:
The Tekamah-Herman Girls are looking to have a great season with a lot of wins and a good showing in the conference tournament, according to Guzinksi. "Finish
in the top four in the conference and win 20+ games."
It's certainly going to take a lot of hard work on the Tigers' part to win 20+ games, but Tekamah-Herman is definitely capable of accomplishing that feat, in my opinion.
Guzinski says the Tigers have to be better on offense this year. "Play
to our strengths which is our height and inside game, handle pressure
better, increase shooting % and free throw %. We have always been
good on defense—we need to improve our scoring."
Tekamah-Herman scored 50 points or more just nine times a season ago, and that has to improve if the Tigers want to be a factor in Class C-1 this season.
Guzinski says things won't be easy. "Our
conference is tougher than hell. I think we have seven or eight
really good teams in our conference and very few easy games. If you
look from last year, all of the good players in our conference for
the most part were underclassmen. I am sure Stanton, WP-B and
Howells-Dodge will all be top 10 teams in their classes and that is
our goal as well. We
have to get off to a good start as we play Stanton, Pender,
Wisner-Pilger, and Twin River in the first two weekends of the
season."
Other tough games for Tekamah-Herman this season include Lyons-Decatur Northeast, West Point-Beemer, and Howells-Dodge.
The Tigers have their work cut out for them, but Tekamah-Herman is a good team that should win quite a few ball games this season. I suspect the Tigers will have a good year, and challenge teams in their conference and sub district.
It should be a season to remember for Tekamah-Herman.
The Tigers open the year at home against Stanton on Thursday.
