Emerson-Hubbard Boys lose to Laurel-Concord-Coleridge and Hartington-Newcastle; Girls beat both
The Emerson-Hubbard Boys lost 84-52 at home to Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Friday night and 64-54 at Hartington-Newcastle Monday night.
The Bears led the Pirates 16-13 after one. Laurel-Concord-Coleridge outscored Emerson-Hubbard 25-15 in the second quarter to take a 41-28 lead into the locker room.
The Bears won the third quarter 15-10 to go up 56-38 at the end of three.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge doubled up the Pirates 28-14 in the fourth quarter.
Tyler Haberman had a game-high 27 points and 14 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Austin Ostrand added 10 points while Tyler Emmons totaled 8. Joshua Sebade notched 7 rebounds.
The Wildcats led Emerson-Hubbard 19-15 after one. Hartington-Newcastle won the second quarter 11-8 to take a 30-23 lead into the locker room.
The Pirates outscored the Wildcats 19-13 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 1 at 43-42 at the end of three.
Hartington-Newcastle scored 21 points in the fourth quarter compared to 12 for Emerson-Hubbard.
Haberman finished with a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds. Blake Ericksen totaled 14 points while Emmons notched 10.
The Pirates had some guys score in their last two games, the problem is Emerson-Hubbard couldn't stop anybody.
The Pirates (0-5) host Ponca (2-3) Friday night.
The Indians defeated the Bears 80-70 on the road Tuesday night.
That's not good news for Emerson-Hubbard, who could desperately use a lift.
Ponca's defense has been inconsistent to say the least so there's a chance for the Pirates to put up some points.
The big question mark though is can Emerson-Hubbard slow down the Indians?
I think the Pirates are definitely capable of finding some answers, but it's going to be difficult.
Regardless of how Emerson-Hubbard fares against Ponca, the Pirates should beat Winside at home on Saturday.
There's no reason to think Emerson-Hubbard won't have a win under their belt before the Holiday Break.
It has been a struggle so far for the Pirates, but a win over Winside and a competitive game with the Indians could go a long ways in Emerson-Hubbard getting their season headed in the right direction.
The Pirates have gotten off on the wrong foot, there's no denying that, but there's still a lot of time left for Emerson-Hubbard.
The Pirates have to build off of Monday night's game, and play even better basketball this weekend.
Emerson-Hubbard has played well at times this season, they just haven't been consistent. That's something that must change if the Pirates are to be better down the stretch.
The Emerson-Hubbard Girls have continued to roll, defeating Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 61-24 at home Friday night before knocking off Hartington-Newcastle 57-22 on the road Monday night.
The Pirates led the Bears 26-2 after one. Emerson-Hubbard won the second quarter 11-9 to make it a 35-11 game at halftime.
The Pirates outscored Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 12-8 in the third quarter to go up 47-19 at the end of three.
Emerson-Hubbard put up 12 fourth quarter points compared to 5 for the Bears.
The Pirates led 9-4 at the end of one against the Wildcats. Emerson-Hubbard outscored Hartington-Newcastle 18-10 in the second quarter to take a 27-14 lead into the locker room.
The Pirates won the third quarter 17-2 to go up 44-16 at the end of three.
Emerson-Hubbard notched 13 fourth quarter points compared to 6 for the Wildcats.
The Pirates keep playing outstanding basketball. All of Emerson-Hubbard's wins, and games for that matter, have been lopsided.
The Pirates (4-1) host Ponca (4-1) Friday night.
The Indians beat Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 51-41 on the road Tuesday night.
It took Ponca overtime to defeat Hartington-Newcastle, and so based on the scores of the games with the Wildcats and Bears, I would say Emerson-Hubbard is in good position to win Friday night.
The Pirates should be 6-1 heading into the Omaha Nation Holiday Tournament.
There's no reason to think that Emerson-Hubbard won't win twice this weekend.
The Pirates are certainly capable of winning twice this weekend, and winning big in both games.
Emerson-Hubbard has to come out and play well from start to finish to blowout both Ponca and Winside.
The Pirates have to take advantage of these games being on their home floor.
Emerson-Hubbard has to view both contests as opportunities to get better and prepare themselves for future games.
The Pirates need to execute well on offense, and play tough defense as well.
The last thing Emerson-Hubbard wants or can afford to do is look sloppy.
The Pirates have played really good basketball to this point in the season, and that needs to continue this weekend.
A win over Ponca would be big as it would be extra power points for Emerson-Hubbard.
The Pirates certainly challenge themselves by playing a good number of C-2 schools, and that will no doubt pay off for them down the stretch if it hasn't already.
