Lyons-Decatur Northeast Boys lose to Bancroft-Rosalie, beat Winside; Girls top both
The Lyons-Decatur Northeast Boys fell 61-44 to Bancroft-Rosalie on the road Saturday before beating Winside 48-31 at home Tuesday night.
Bancroft-Rosalie led Lyons-Decatur Northeast 15-6 at the end of one. The Cougars won the second quarter 12-11 to make it a 26-18 game at halftime.
The Panthers won the second quarter 15-13 to lead 41-31 at the end of three.
Bancroft-Rosalie outscored Lyons-Decatur Northeast 20-13 in the fourth quarter.
The Cougars quadrupled up the Wildcats 16-4 in the first quarter. Both teams scored 7 second quarter points to make it a 23-11 game at halftime.
Winside won the third quarter 15-12 to make it a 35-26 game at the end of three.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast outscored the Wildcats 13-5 in the fourth quarter.
Alec Anderson finished 14 of 20 for 29 points. He also had 14 rebounds to pace the Cougars. Cole Christoffersen added 8 points and 7 rebounds.
The Cougars have played ok basketball so far. I feel like Lyons-Decatur Northeast could be playing better, but they could also be doing worse.
The Cougars (1-1) host Clarkson/Leigh (1-3) on Saturday.
The Patriots defeated Winside 75-56 on the road Thursday night after losing 77-55 at home to Oakland-Craig Tuesday night.
I look for this to be a pretty even game between two fairly equal teams.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast has to be wary of Colby Becker, Kobe Paprocki, and Ben McMullin as those three each scored in double figures against the Wildcats.
Clarkson/Leigh hasn't had a lot of trouble scoring, but their defense has been suspect at best.
I don't think there's any doubt this game will be won or lost on the defensive end of the floor for the Cougars.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast has to find a way to slow down the Patriots like they did Winside.
If the Cougars can hold Clarkson/Leigh under 50 points I think they will be in good shape.
I have a feeling Lyons-Decatur Northeast's offense is due to break out. The Cougars haven't been the best offensive team so far this season, but they're taking on a Patriots' team that has struggled to slow people down.
I think Saturday's game will be close and entertaining. I could see the game going either way. The game being in Lyons really helps the Cougars.
A win for Lyons-Decatur Northeast would be big heading into the Howells-Dodge game next Friday night.
The Lyons-Decatur Northeast Girls are off to a solid start as the Cougars are 2-0 following wins over Bancroft-Rosalie and Winside.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast defeated the Panthers 48-44 on the road Saturday before downing the Wildcats 62-27 at home Tuesday night.
The Cougars led Bancroft-Rosalie 13-12 at the end of one. The Panthers won the second quarter 13-12 to tie the game at 25 at halftime.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast outscored Bancroft-Rosalie 15-9 in the third quarter to lead 40-34 at the end of three.
The Panthers put up 10 fourth quarter points compared to 8 for the Cougars, but it wasn't enough to comeback.
Brianne Haskell had 21 points and 7 rebounds for Lyons-Decatur Northeast. Lexie Bacon added 7 points.
The Cougars tripled up the Wildcats 15-5 in the first quarter. Winside won the second quarter 8-6 to make it a 21-13 game at halftime.
Lyons-Decatur Northeast outscored the Wildcats 23-8 in the third quarter to go up 44-21 at the end of three.
The Cougars tripled up Winside 18-6 in the fourth quarter.
Kelly Wakeley led the way with 16 points. Bacon added 14 while Tessie Collins totaled 10. Mariah Jessen notched 10 points and 10 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Abby Peterson chipped in 8 rebounds.
The Cougars are 2-0 on the season despite having a limited number of girls on the bench. Head Coach Rex Haskell. "We don't have a lot of kids. We got 9 on the bench, and when we get in foul trouble we get in trouble. So we're learning to play better and not foul. When we stay out of foul trouble we're pretty competitive I think with anybody we play."
Lyons-Decatur Northeast hosts Clarkson/Leigh (2-2) on Saturday.
The Patriots won 49-12 at Winside Thursday night after falling 65-29 at home to Oakland-Craig Tuesday night.
Clarkson/Leigh has been blown out a couple of times this year, but they do have two wins.
Granted they were against Madison and Winside, but still 2-2 is 2-2.
With that said, I think the Cougars are going to be the best team the Patriots will have faced so far this season.
Wakeley, Bacon, Collins, and Jessen showed how balanced this team can be offensively.
When Lyons-Decatur Northeast is on, they are on.
Depth is and will be an issue for the Cougars all year long, but if Lyons-Decatur Northeast stays out of foul trouble and utilizes their bench to their best ability, they should be in good shape.
I think the Cougars will be really pushed and challenged in this game, but I think Lyons-Decatur Northeast will rise to the occasion.
The Cougars are at home, and have a great opportunity in front of them. I think Lyons-Decatur Northeast has a good chance to win, especially with the game being in Lyons.
The Cougars have to maximize their potential on Saturday. Improving to 3-0 would be a big deal for this program.
