Pender Boys begin year 0-2; Girls 2-0 after the first week

The Pender Boys have competed hard so far, but are off to an 0-2 start as the Pendragons lost 55-41 at Wakefield last Thursday night before falling 72-67 in triple overtime to Tekamah-Herman at home Friday night.

The Trojans led Pender 12-9 at the end of one. Wakefield won the second quarter 21-10 to go up 33-19 at halftime.

The Trojans outscored the Pendragons 10-8 in the third quarter to make it a 43-27 game at the end of three.

Pender notched 14 fourth quarter points compared to 12 for Wakefield.

The Tigers led the Pendragons 15-10 after one. Pender won the second quarter 7-6 to make it a 21-17 game at halftime.

Tekamah-Herman outscored the Pendragons 17-7 in the third quarter to lead 38-24 at the end of three.

Pender tripled up the Tigers 21-7 in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 45 and send the game into overtime.

Both teams scored 10 points in the first overtime, and the game was tied at 55 heading into the second overtime.

Both teams notched 6 points in the second overtime, and the game was nodded up at 61 heading into the third overtime.

Tekamah-Herman outlasted the Pendragons 11-6 in the third overtime period.

Pender is playing respectable basketball so far, in my opinion. I think the Pendragons are quite a bit better than they were a year ago.

Pender (0-2) takes on Oakland-Craig (2-1) on the road Friday night.

The Knights defeated Clarkson/Leigh 77-55 on the road Tuesday night.

Oakland-Craig has been good so far this season, and has had a number of players step up and score for tehm.

The Pendragons have to be wary of Carter Thiele, Cody Mace, Cole Mitchell, and Garrett Seagren.

Those four have put up some impressive numbers for the Knights this season, and have proven to be lethal scorers.

Pender has to play hard and believe in one another. Even if the Pendragons don't win, as long as they make it close that could serve as a moral victory.

I think Pender has what it takes to play respectable basketball Friday night. The Pendragons will have had an entire week to prepare for Oakland-Craig so that should help.

I look for Pender to go into Oakland and hold their own. This Pendragons team has shown they are capable of turning their program around, and I look for Pender to take more positive steps in the right direction Friday night.

The Knights are a good team so winning might be out of the question for the Pendragons, but anything can happen.

Pender has to believe in themselves and one another, and play their heart and guts out and see what happens.

The Pender Girls are off to a hot start as the Pendragons defeated Wakefield 72-33 on the road Thursday night and Tekamah-Herman 75-65 at home Friday night.

The Pendragons led the Trojans 27-2 after one. Pender won the second quarter 18-17 to go up 45-19 at halftime.

Pender outscored Wakefield 18-10 in the third quarter to lead 63-29 at the end of three.

The Pendragons won the fourth quarter 9-4.

Kam Anderson finished with a game-high 19 points. Justice Sorenson notched 16 while Hallie Ballinger added 14. Amber English notched 10 while Cecelie Jacobsen added 9 points and 14 rebounds.

Pender led the Tigers 15-11 after one. The Pendragons won the second quarter 23-18 to take a 38-29 lead into the locker room.

The Tigers outscored Pender 14-11 in the third quarter to make it a 49-43 game at the end of three.

The Pendragons notched 26 fourth quarter points compared to 22 for Tekamah-Herman.

Head Coach Larry Ballinger's girls made 34 out of 39 free throws in the win. "Well we needed every bit of it this game. It was a physical game, and a lot of fouls called. But most one of them were well deserved. This is a physical game, and fortunately we shot the ball well at the free throw line cause we needed to."

Hallie Ballinger scored 21 points and secured 8 rebounds for Pender. Sorenson totaled 21 points while Anderson and English recorded 18 and 10 points, respectively.

The Pendragons are off to a fabulous start. You couldn't ask for a better start to the season if you are Pender.

The Pendragons (2-0) travel to Oakland to battle Oakland-Craig (3-0) Friday night.

The Knights defeated Clarkson/Leigh 65-29 on the road Tuesday night.

Dacey Nelson, Brynn Charling, Bailey Charling, Olivia Bures, and Melanie Snader have all scored the ball for Oakland-Craig this season.

Like the Pendragons, the Knights have a number of different weapons who can do damage.

This should be a great game between two teams who are playing at a very high level right now.

Both teams have been super dominant, and have gotten off to fabulous starts.

I think Pender has been a little bit better offensively than Oakland-Craig, but the Knights' defense has been suffocating to this point.

The Pendragons are going to have to play tough minded basketball if they want to come out on top.

Pender has to be physical, and has to be mentally tough.

A couple of things here or there could go a long ways in determining how this game goes so it's important for the Pendragons to avoid silly mistakes that are costly.

In other words, Pender can't beat themselves. The Pendragons have to keep their composure and not do anything silly that could cost them the game.

Cheap fouls are part of the game, but Pender has to do everything in their power to minimize mistakes.
