Team: Winnebago
Mascot: Indians
Colors: Blue and White
Class: C-2
Conference: Lewis and Clark
Head Coach: Jeff Berridge (4th season) (94-14 career record)
2014-2015 record: 27-1 (Won C-1 State Championship)
Returning Starters: 1
Overview:
After winning it all a season ago, the Winnebago Indians hope to have more success this year.
Winnebago returns one starter in David Wingett (6'7 JR G,F).
The Indians had a couple of players transfer in in Aspen LaPointe; 6-1 guard SR and his brother D'von LaPointe; 6-0 guard SO.
It's certainly not easy to win every year, regardless of what level of ball you're playing. Head Coach Jeff Berridge lays out his team's expectations even though his team dropped down to C-2. "To leave no regrets every game, play every game like it's our last."
I think it's safe to say Winnebago did that a year ago. Rez ball certainly worked for the Indians a year ago, and I suspect it will work again for the Indians this season.
Berridge explains his team's strengths. "We have to play to see what we offer, new team have to get a feel of the game."
It could certainly take some time for the new look Indians to get going, but once this team gets on a roll, look out. Berridge says it's hard to know what his team's weaknesses are at this point. "Have to play before we find out, learn from each game to improve."
Winnebago should have another fantastic season. I think the Indians will be one of the best teams in C-2, and a threat to get to Lincoln again.
Winnebago may not be as good as they were last year, but I still think the Indians are a very good team. Berridge has won with this program whether that's been as a Co-Head Coach or by himself.
I'm sure this team is very confident in what they do, and that should lead to amazing things this season. Look for Winnebago home games to be packed.
Season Outlook:
The Winnebago Indians hope to have another dream season and win another state title.
When you have talent like Winnebago does, it's easy to get excited. Berridge says he is ready for the season to get underway. "It's going to be fun, can't wait to get started."
The Indians open up the season at home on Thursday against Homer.
Winnebago figures to have their challenges this season, there's no doubt about that.
I look for teams like Homer, Walthill, Omaha Nation, Norfolk Catholic, Wynot, Bancroft-Rosalie, and perhaps Gothenburg to challenge the Indians.
Winnebago pretty much blew out everybody they played last year. That may not be the case this year. The Indians could definitely have some closer games this season.
