Clarkson/Leigh Boys 1-2 in last three games
The Clarkson/Leigh Boys lost 38-21 at Twin River last Thursday night before falling 58-40 at Lutheran High Northeast last Friday night. The Patriots picked up their first win of the season over Tekamah-Herman Thursday night, winning 42-35.
The Titans blanked Clarkson/Leigh 12-0 in the first quarter. Twin River outscored the Patriots 17-7 in the second quarter to take a 29-7 lead into the locker room.
Clarkson/Leigh won the third quarter 9-7 to make it a 36-16 game at the end of three.
The Patriots outlasted the Titans 5-2 in the fourth quarter.
Anthony Bruhn led the way with 9 points.
The Eagles led Clarkson/Leigh 18-7 at the end of the first quarter. LHNE outscored the Patriots 19-12 in the second quarter to take a 37-19 lead into the locker room.
The Eagles outlasted Clarkson/Leigh 12-5 in the third quarter to go up 49-24 at the end of three.
The Patriots won the fourth quarter 16-9.
Garrett Schroeder had a team-high 16 points and 7 rebounds while Haden Held and Blake Paprocki registered 9 and 8, respectively. Bradley Bunner added 7 rebounds.
The Patriots led the Tigers 14-9 at the end of one. Clarkson/Leigh doubled up Tekamah-Herman 12-6 in the second quarter to take a 26-15 lead into the locker room.
The Patriots won the third quarter 9-8 to lead 35-23 at the end of three.
The Tigers outscored Clarkson/Leigh 12-7 in the fourth quarter.
Schroeder and Bruhn paced the Patriots with 12 points apiece. Bunner chipped in 10 rebounds while Paprocki and Schroeder totaled 9 and 7, respectively.
Head Coach Jay Knaak says despite the win....he didn't like what he saw in the fourth quarter. "We had our head down against the press and threw the ball into traps. Had guys wide open underneath the basket, and we didn't see them. When we did get it to them then we seemed to miss."
It was Knaak's first win of the season. "It feels good to get our first win, but it also feels bad the way we played in the 4th quarter. We had it very well in hand, and give credit to Tekamah-Herman. They scrapped the whole game right down to the end."
The Patriots (1-15) take on Twin River (13-4) in the first round of the East Husker Conference Tournament in Genoa on Saturday.
The Titans won 44-39 at home over Stanton Thursday night.
Twin River has won 9 in a row and has been on a roll the second half of the season, but I'm not sold on the Titans just yet.
I'm not suggesting Clarkson/Leigh will upset Twin River, but I could see the Titans not going very far in this tournament.
The Patriots have been playing better basketball over their last three games, in my opinion, and I look for Clarkson/Leigh to hang and compete with Twin River.
The Patriots should be quite confident at the moment given the fact they just won their first game of the season.
Clarkson/Leigh finally got the monkey off their back so that should help them relax and just play basketball from here on out.
The only thing I would say the Patriots could do a little bit better job of is closing out games.
Clarkson/Leigh kind of got sloppy in the 4th quarter of Thursday night's game, but a lot of that could have to do with the fact the Patriots got prematurely excited that they were going to win a game.
I'm sure Clarkson/Leigh is aware of this, but the Patriots need to be sharp for four quarters against Twin River.
The Patriots can't have any bad quarters, and cannot afford to slip up in any manner.
Clarkson/Leigh upset Logan View/Scribner-Snyder in this tournament last year so perhaps it could be deja vu all over again in terms of the Patriots upsetting a team in the tournament again.
I still think the Titans are playing too good right now to lose to Clarkson/Leigh, but I could be wrong as anything can happen.
Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
