Howells-Dodge Boys and Girls 1-1 in last two games

The Howells-Dodge Boys split their last two games, downing Clarkson/Leigh 48-32 on the road last Thursday night before falling 56-39 at home to Wisner-Pilger Friday night.

The Patriots led the Jaguars 13-11 after one. Howells-Dodge won the second quarter 6-4 to tie the game at 17 at halftime.

The Jaguars doubled up the Patriots 22-11 in the third quarter to lead 39-28 at the end of three.

Howells-Dodge outscored Clarkson/Leigh 9-4 in the fourth quarter.

Lane Hegemann led the way with 11 points while Connor Blum added 10. Dax VanLengen and Caden Jackson totaled 9 apiece while Kade Hegemann registered 8 rebounds.

Head Coach Cole Fischer assesses his team's performance.

"We struggled to find any rhythm offensively but played decent defense."

The Gators led early and often, going up 14-9 after one. The Jaguars won the second quarter 14-13 to make it a 27-23 game at halftime.

Wisner-Pilger ran away with things in the second half, outscoring Howells-Dodge 16-7 in the third quarter to go up 43-30 at the end of three.

The Gators outlasted the Jaguars 13-9 in the fourth quarter.

Zach Bayer led Howells-Dodge with a team-high 8 points while Kade Hegemann and VanLengen totaled 7 apiece.

Fischer says the third quarter was the story of the game.

"We did not attack their zone and they made a nice run the third and we did not respond."

The Jaguars (8-7) take on Pender (4-9) on the road Saturday.

The Pendragons lost 71-19 at home to North Bend Central last Thursday night.

I don't think Howells-Dodge has been playing as well lately as they have at times this year, but I think the Jaguars will be able to find a way to beat Pender.

The Pendragons are an improved team over last year I would say, but haven't really beaten anyone.

Howells-Dodge has played and beaten some tough teams so I think the Jaguars are in good shape to pick up a win over Pender.

Howells-Dodge also has a huge advantage in terms of preparation as the Pendragons are at Wisner-Pilger Thursday night and Wynot Friday night.

The Jaguars have to come out and flat out dominate on Saturday.

There's no reason why this game should even be close. Howells-Dodge should be able to win going away.

I look for the Jaguars to have an excellent game plan with almost an entire week of practice time before it's all said and done.

This is a good time for Howells-Dodge to rest up for next week's game with Logan View/Scribner-Snyder and the East Husker Conference Tournament.

The Jaguars shouldn't overlook Pender by any means, but this is a game Howells-Dodge should be able to get a comfortable enough lead in to rest starters.

At the same time, I think the Jaguars will probably want to get the starters some work with this being their only game this week.

The Howells-Dodge Girls beat Wisner-Pilger 53-49 at home Friday night before losing 41-35 at Columbus Scotus on Saturday.

Howells-Dodge doubled up Wisner-Pilger 18-9 in the first quarter. The Jaguars outscored the Gators 14-6 in the second quarter to take a 32-15 lead into the locker room.

The Gators won the third quarter 11-10 to make it a 42-26 game at the end of three.

Wisner-Pilger outlasted Howells-Dodge 23-11 in the fourth quarter as Alexis Heller hit a half court shot at the buzzer for the Gators.

Sam Brester led all scorers with 24 points and had 13 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Macey Kulhanek chipped in 11 while Chelsea Bayer totaled 8. Erin Prusa chipped in 7 rebounds.

The Shamrocks jumped on the Jaguars 11-2 after one. Columbus Scotus won the second quarter 9-8 to go up 20-10 at halftime.

Howells-Dodge outscored the Shamrocks 9-8 in the third quarter to make it a 28-19 game at the end of three.

The Jaguars outlasted Columbus Scotus 16-13 in the fourth quarter.

Kulhanek led the way with 12 points while Brester totaled 10 points and 8 rebounds.

The start of the game is what cost Howells-Dodge against the Shamrocks, in my opinion. If the Jaguars had gotten off to a better start they definitely could have won.

Howells-Dodge (13-2) hosts Tekamah-Herman (2-11) Friday night.

The Tigers lost 42-36 at home to West Point-Beemer on Saturday.

Tekamah-Herman is a better team than their record would indicate I would say, but I don't think they're anywhere near the Jaguars' level.

Howells-Dodge should be able to win rather easily. I don't see this game being very close.

I didn't think the Wisner-Pilger game would be as close as it was though so perhaps I'll be surprised by the result of this game as well.

The Jaguars have a showdown at Pender on Saturday in what is a gigantic game for East Husker Conference Tournament seeding.

So the biggest things for Howells-Dodge on Friday is to take care of business and rest starters against Tekamah-Herman and not look past the Tigers.

Tekamah-Herman is better than their record I think, and deserves the Jaguars' full attention.

But again, if Howells-Dodge plays up to their full potential, the Jaguars shouldn't have much problem with the Tigers whatsoever.

Looking ahead to Saturday's game, the Jaguars need to play sound defensively and slow down Kam Anderson, Hallie Ballinger, Cecilee Jacobsen, and others.

I think offense will be really critical for Howells-Dodge too though. The Jaguars were held to 40 points in the loss to GACC and 35 in the loss to Scotus, and so I think Howells-Dodge is going to need to score more than they did in those games to come away with the victory.

If the Jaguars can get in the 60's on Saturday, they should win. The 50's might even do it too.
