Pender Boys fall to Howells-Dodge and Madison; Girls lose to Jaguars
The Pender Boys lost 62-41 at home to Howells-Dodge on Saturday before dropping a 77-59 decision at Madison Monday night.
The Jaguars led the Pendragons 17-11 after one. Howells-Dodge outscored Pender 21-9 in the second quarter to take a 38-20 lead into the locker room.
The Jaguars won the third quarter 10-8 to go up 48-28 at the end of three.
Howells-Dodge outlasted the Pendragons 14-13 in the fourth quarter.
The Dragons led Pender 31-18 at the end of one. The Pendragons won the second quarter 16-15 to make it a 46-34 game at halftime.
Madison outlasted Pender 12-11 in the third quarter to go up 58-45 at the end of three.
The Dragons outscored the Pendragons 19-14 in the fourth quarter.
I thought Pender played better basketball against Howells-Dodge and Madison than they had been in games prior.
The Pendragons (4-13) take on BRLD (11-5) in the first round of the East Husker Conference Tournament in Genoa on Saturday.
This is the first meeting of the season between the two teams.
The Wolverines downed Stanton 51-42 at home last time out.
BRLD has been kind of up and down this year, and I think Pender has a chance to compete and keep things relatively close with them if they play the way they did against the Jaguars and Dragons.
Pender's scoring was much better against Madison than it has been for much of the season, and I think that's something the Pendragons can build on heading into Saturday's game.
Pender still has some work to do defensively, but if the Pendragons can score on Saturday the way they did on Monday, Pender might have a chance at an upset.
The Wolverines are a very solid team, but upsets happen all the time, especially this time of year, so the Pendragons have to be thinking upset.
A 12 seed over a 5 seed is a very popular upset in the Men's NCAA Tournament so I don't see why it can't happen in the East Husker Conference Tournament as well.
Pender should benefit from not having played since Monday. BRLD was in action against Winnebago Thursday night.
The Pendragons should and will have had plenty of time to practice and prepare for the Wolverines so I look for Pender to be primed and ready to go Saturday night.
The Pendragons just have to continue to play their game and do the things offensively that has given them success on that end of the floor in recent games, and fix things defensively.
I think defense could ultimately decide this game.
Both teams can score it's just a matter of which team shows up defensively.
The Pender Girls lost 55-45 at home to Howells-Dodge on Saturday.
The Pendragons led the Jaguars 13-9 at the end of one. Howells-Dodge outscored Pender 20-9 in the second quarter to take a 29-22 lead into the locker room.
Both teams scored 11 points in the third quarter to make it a 40-33 game at the end of three.
The Jaguars won the fourth quarter 15-12.
Hallie Ballinger totaled 14 points and 7 rebounds while Michaela Wegner and Amber English notched 13 and 11, respectively. Cecilee Jacobsen registered 13 rebounds.
The Pendragons played well with the exception of the second quarter. Take away that quarter and Pender is victorious.
The Pendragons (14-4) host Logan View/Scribner/Snyder (4-12) Friday night.
The Raiders are coming off a 71-30 loss at Howells-Dodge last time out.
This is the first and only meeting of the season between the two teams.
I think LV/SS is capable of competing and making things interesting for a while, but ultimately I think Pender will have too much for the Raiders in the end.
This is the Pendragons' year to do something, and despite their recent struggles, Pender should be able to find a way to win Friday night.
I could see things being closer than some think, but I could also see the Pendragons winning big.
Both teams have been Jekyll and Hyde at times this season, and have suffered from inconsistent play, in my opinion.
It's important for Pender to come out and smack LV/SS in the mouth.
The Pendragons have to "blitz" the Raiders, and never look back.
LV/SS has some athletic girls that look like they can play so Pender can't take the Raiders lightly or underestimate them whatsoever.
The Pendragons have to come out with a business like attitude Friday night, and take care of business.
Pender could very well get Twin River in the second round on Monday, and that would be a great battle between those two teams.
First things first though, the Pendragons have to take care of business against LV/SS.
Friday night's game is scheduled to tip-off at 6:00 p.m. in Pender.
