Clarkson/Leigh Boys fall to Howells-Dodge and Humphrey St. Francis; Girls lose to Flyers
The Clarkson/Leigh Boys fell 48-32 at home to Howells-Dodge Thursday night before losing 66-24 at home to Humphrey St. Francis Friday night.
The Patriots led the Jaguars 13-11 after one. Howells-Dodge won the second quarter 6-4 to tie the game at 17 at halftime.
The Jaguars doubled up the Patriots 22-11 in the third quarter to lead 39-28 at the end of three.
Howells-Dodge outscored Clarkson/Leigh 9-4 in the fourth quarter.
Blake Paprocki had a game-high 12 points while Anthony Bruhn registered 10 points and 8 rebounds.
The Flyers jumped out to a 30-4 lead at the end of one. Humphrey St. Francis outscored the Patriots 16-6 in the second quarter to take a 46-10 lead into the locker room.
The Flyers won the third quarter 12-11 to go up 58-21 at the end of three.
Humphrey St. Francis outlasted Clarkson/Leigh 8-3 in the fourth quarter.
Bradley Bunner finished with a team-high 8 points.
I thought the Patriots did a nice job competing against the Jaguars, Clarkson/Leigh just didn't have anything left in the tank for Friday it appears though.
The Patriots (0-13) square off with Twin River (9-4) on the road Thursday night.
The Titans won 54-43 at home over Cross County Thursday night.
This is going to be another tough game for Clarkson/Leigh I'm afraid.
There's not much to say to the players other than keep your head up and keep working hard.
This is a difficult and critical juncture in the Patriots' season.
Clarkson/Leigh has four games in a row on the road, and if there's ever a time to toughen up and turn the corner, now is it.
It has been such a hard season for the Patriots. I'm sure it's very frustrating losing game after game.
The only ones that can change Clarkson/Leigh's fortunes though is the team.
Every one of these Patriot players have to keep working and playing hard, and believe that a win is going to come their way.
It's so easy to get down on yourself and feel negative and just not be positive after all that has taken place, but Clarkson/Leigh has to find their way out of this hole and get the monkey that is currently on their backs off.
The Patriots have to visualize victory, and dream about what it would feel like to taste a win this season.
The majority of these players know what it takes to win in sports, as evident in football, so it's not like these players are strangers to success.
Clarkson/Leigh won some games in basketball last year too so it can definitely be done this year.
The Patriots just need everyone on the team to step up and contribute.
Clarkson/Leigh needs Paprocki, Bruhn, and Bunner to all be on offensively at the same time.
The Patriots just need to figure out how to put things all together, and it might lead to better success for Clarkson/Leigh down the line.
The Clarkson/Leigh Girls lost 50-43 at home to Humphrey St. Francis Friday night.
The Flyers led the Patriots 11-9 after one. Clarkson/Leigh won the second quarter 16-14 to tie the game at 25 at halftime.
Both teams scored 11 points in the third quarter, and things were all nodded up at 36 at the end of three.
Humphrey St. Francis doubled up the Patriots 14-7 in the fourth quarter.
Kaegan Held registered 17 points to lead the way. Shelby Paprocki and Ashlynn Novotny totaled 8 apiece while Hannah Kasik chipped in 7.
The Patriots were right there for three quarters. It was just Clarkson/Leigh's inability to finish that ultimately cost them the game, in my opinion.
The Patriots (4-9) battle Twin River (12-2) on the road Thursday night.
The Titans won 50-23 at home over Cross County Thursday night.
Twin River is having a great and very fine season, and they will be difficult for Clarkson/Leigh to hang and compete with, and beat, there's no doubt about it.
This is a key time of the year for the Patriots though. Clarkson/Leigh has four road games in a row prior to the East Husker Conference Tournament.
The Patriots have to find a way to win at least a couple of games and keep their other two contests before the tournament close.
If Clarkson/Leigh could find a way to win three out of four prior to the conference tournament that would be a huge accomplishment, but it won't be easy.
I think the Patriots ought to be pretty hungry and motivated come Thursday though given what happened Friday night.
Clarkson/Leigh was right there, and probably feels they should of beaten the Flyers.
All the Patriots can do now though is move on and use the loss as fuel and motivation to play better down the line.
Clarkson/Leigh has to be better offensively down the stretch against teams, and their defense needs to come through when it counts as well.
The Patriots are competing much better in games this year than last, but Clarkson/Leigh still isn't finishing games the way they need to I would say.
If the Patriots can at least compete with the Titans Thursday night, and beat Lutheran High Northeast Friday night, Clarkson/Leigh might be able to win both games next week before the conference tournament.
I feel the Patriots are a team that's getting better and on the rise, but we will find out a lot about this team in the next week or two, in my opinion.
