Stanton Boys fall to Boone Central/Newman Grove and Wakefield; Girls beat both

The Stanton Boys lost 83-46 at home to Boone Central/Newman Grove last Friday night before falling 68-50 at Wakefield on Saturday.

The Cardinals led the Mustangs 17-13 after one. BC/NG outscored Stanton 29-12 in the second quarter to lead 46-25 at halftime.

The Cardinals outlasted the Mustangs 33-19 in the third quarter to go up 79-44 at the end of three.

BC/NG doubled up Stanton 4-2 in the fourth quarter.

Myles Nickolite had 17 points while Trey Erbst notched 12.

The Trojans held a 16-12 lead on the Mustangs at the end of one. Stanton won the second quarter 12-8 to tie the game at 24 at halftime.

The third quarter was the difference in the game as Wakefield outscored the Mustangs 29-13 to lead 53-37 at the end of three.

The Trojans outlasted Stanton 15-13 in the fourth quarter.

The Mustangs definitely had a chance against Wakefield until the third quarter. The loss to the Trojans just shows the importance of playing well for four quarters.

Stanton (3-11) takes on BRLD (10-4) on the road Saturday.

The Wolverines won 67-62 in overtime at Wakefield Thursday night.

This is another game the Mustangs can compete well in and win if they play a four quarter game.

BRLD was down big against Wakefield and rallied late so perhaps Stanton can do what the Trojans did in getting a lead, and maybe can hold on and win.

The Mustangs must have a good game plan for slowing down Kenyan Lovejoy, Montana Riecken, Cole Christofferson, Trent Gatewood, Aaron Ras, and others from BRLD.

The Wolverines are stacked with talent, but Stanton has some kids who can play too.

I think Saturday's game has the potential to be close and entertaining, and I feel the Mustangs have a chance to win.

Stanton has had a full week to prepare for BRLD so that should help.

The Mustangs have to come out pumped and fired up, and raring to go.

Stanton has to play the way they did in the first half against the Trojans, and play that same way in the second half as well.

The Mustangs have to play optimistic basketball and believe that an upset is possible, because it is.

This game is also big for East Husker Conference Seeding for both teams.

Stanton has to play with a sense of purpose and energy. The Mustangs have to find a way to overcome the way they have played so far this season.

It hasn't been the best nor the prettiest season for Stanton by any stretch of the imagination, but perhaps the Mustangs can find a way to play well and win on Saturday.

The Stanton Girls won 53-37 at home over Boone Central/Newman Grove last Friday night, and beat Wakefield 41-29 on the road Saturday.

The Mustangs led the Cardinals 13-5 after one. Stanton outscored BC/NG 13-5 in the second quarter to take a 26-10 lead into the locker room.

The Mustangs outlasted the Cardinals 15-7 in the third quarter to go up 41-17 at the end of three.

BC/NG won the fourth quarter 20-12.

Jessie Brandl had 16 points and 13 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. MacKenzie Brandl added 12 points while Bree Burtwhistle totaled 10.

Stanton tripled up the Trojans 15-5 in the first quarter. The Mustangs outscored Wakefield 13-6 in the second quarter to go up 28-11 at halftime.

The Trojans won the third quarter 11-10 to make it a 38-22 game at the end of three.

Wakefield outlasted Stanton 7-3 in the fourth quarter.

MacKenzie Brandl notched 15 points and 14 rebounds, good enough for a double-double, while Jessie Brandl added 11 points and 9 rebounds while Hannah Heppner registered 10 points and 9 rebounds. Burtwhistle recorded 7 rebounds.

I thought the Mustangs played great basketball against BC/NG and Wakefield. I don't think the games were actually as close as the scores would indicate.

Stanton (13-1) takes on BRLD (11-4) on the road Saturday.

The Wolverines won 74-36 at Wakefield Thursday night.

BRLD has a lot of girls that can score, including Kelly Wakeley, Lexie Bacon, Tess Nottleman, Vicki Gatzemeyer, Tiahna Bonneau, Paige Peters, and others.

That means the Mustangs will have to be on top of their game defensively, and be ready to defend well for four quarters.

BRLD has been an offensive juggernaut for the most part this year, but their defense is susceptible to giving up a lot of points.

I talked about how Stanton needed to step things up on the offensive end to become a more legit state title contender. And I thought the Mustangs took some steps forward over the weekend doing that.

Stanton continued their suffocating defensive play last weekend as well, and I look for the Mustangs to play well on defense Saturday also.

This is a big game for East Husker Conference Tournament Seeding.

I think Stanton stands a good chance to be the 2 seed if they win this game so this one is big and really important.

A dynasty is being built at Stanton, and a win over the Wolverines would be another big and positive step towards the Mustangs becoming a perennial powerhouse.

If Stanton plays the way they are capable of on Saturday they should win.

There's no reason to think the Mustangs won't find a way to beat BRLD.

The Wolverines are tough though and I could see both of these teams making state when it's all said and done.
