Emerson-Hubbard Boys and Girls go winless at Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament
The Emerson-Hubbard Boys went winless at the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament last week, losing 43-36 to Pender last Friday night and 46-34 to Homer last Saturday.
The Pendragons led the Pirates 10-9 at the end of one. Pender won the second quarter 9-7 to lead 19-16 at halftime.
The Pendragons outscored Emerson-Hubbard 17-8 in the third quarter to go up 36-24 at the end of three.
The Pirates outlasted Pender 12-7 in the fourth quarter.
Taylor Donner had 13 points to lead the way while Jacob Kneifl totaled 9. Joshua Sebade added 8 points and 7 rebounds.
Emerson-Hubbard held an 11-9 lead on the Knights after one. Homer outscored the Pirates 18-12 in the second quarter to go up 27-23 at halftime.
The Knights won the third quarter 8-5 to lead 35-28 at the end of three.
Homer outlasted Emerson-Hubbard 11-6 in the fourth quarter.
Donner had a team-high 11 points while Sebade and Kneifl notched 9 points and 7 rebounds each.
I thought the Pirates had a chance to pick up their first win of the season in this tournament, but they were simply unable to get the job done.
Emerson-Hubbard (0-11) hosts Wynot (9-3) on Saturday.
The Blue Devils lost 48-37 at Winnebago Friday night.
That's a pretty respectable loss for Wynot. The Pirates are going to have a tough time with the Blue Devils there's no doubt about it.
Donner, Sebade, and Kneifl just need to keep doing their thing though and lead this team the best they can.
They and others need to score even more though if they want to come out in front.
It can't be easy to go into games and practices knowing a game has yet to be won, but Emerson-Hubbard has to continue to find ways to motivate themselves and believe that they can turn the corner eventually.
The Pirates' struggles have to be difficult for everyone involved. I'm sure this isn't what Emerson-Hubbard envisioned the season unfolding like at all.
The Pirates just have to do their best to remain positive and continue to learn and grow though. Emerson-Hubbard is in a tough position right now, and simply have to find a way to make things better and find more success.
Jalen Wieseler appears to be a pretty dynamic player for Wynot so perhaps the Pirates should focus a big part of their effort on him.
I think Emerson-Hubbard's best bet is to try and slow him down and make others beat them.
The Pirates have another shot at Homer next week so if Emerson-Hubbard can at least compete and make things close and interesting with the Blue Devils, that may give them the boost they need to knock off the Knights.
The Pirates are due to pick up a win one of these nights so Emerson-Hubbard just has to continue to grind and work hard.
The Pirates should be plenty rested not having a game this week prior to this so Emerson-Hubbard should be fresh and ready to go, and should have a good game plan.
The main thing is get better than the last time out.
The Emerson-Hubbard Girls also lost twice at the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament last week, falling 39-28 to Wakefield last Friday night, and 53-39 to Homer last Saturday.
The Pirates led the Trojans 7-6 after one. Wakefield outscored Emerson-Hubbard 9-4 in the second quarter to take a 15-11 lead into the locker room.
The Trojans outlasted the Pirates 17-11 in the third quarter to go up 32-22 at the end of three.
Wakefield won the fourth quarter 7-6.
Melanie Gentrup had 11 points and 9 rebounds to lead Emerson-Hubbard while Taylor Daum and Caleigh Mackling notched 10 and 7 rebounds, respectively.
The Knights jumped out to a 13-4 lead on the Pirates at the end of one. Homer won the second quarter 13-8 to take a 26-12 lead into the locker room.
The Knights outscored Emerson-Hubbard 17-6 in the third quarter to go up 43-18 at the end of three.
The Pirates outlasted Homer 21-10 in the fourth quarter.
Gentrup led the way with 11 points while Mackling chipped in 10.
Emerson-Hubbard just dug themselves too deep a hole in both games to be able to come back and win.
The Pirates (3-8) host Wynot (10-3) on Saturday.
The Blue Devils won 60-20 at Winnebago Friday night.
Wynot is an extremely good team, and Emerson-Hubbard has their hands full and work cut out for them, there's no doubt about it.
I think the Pirates just have to focus on staying in the game and not falling behind too big.
Emerson-Hubbard can't afford to fall behind the way they did last week or it could be game over for the Pirates.
Emerson-Hubbard has to try and slow the pace of the game down and play at their tempo.
The Pirates have to play strong defense and shoot a good percentage offensively.
Converting easy baskets such as layups and getting to the free throw line and converting free throws is super important to Emerson-Hubbard's chances of pulling off the upset, in my opinion.
The Blue Devils have played extremely consistently good basketball all season long, and will be tough to beat, there's no doubt about it.
With that said, the Pirates have to expect to win.
This team won a state championship last year, and these girls have to step things up and play with some pride.
Emerson-Hubbard has to reflect on what they accomplished last year and use it as fuel and motivation to have success against Wynot on Saturday.
The Blue Devils are for real as they have won numerous state championships themselves so don't expect Wynot to be bothered by the fact the Pirates are defending Class D-1 State Champions.
If anything I think the Blue Devils will look to take it to Emerson-Hubbard the way they did Winnebago.
So the Pirates just have to do their best to hang in there and compete. Emerson-Hubbard has a tall task in front of them, but anything can happen, and so the Pirates have to play optimistic and loose, and just have fun and see what happens.
