GACC Boys fall to O'Neill and Hartington Cedar Catholic; Girls 3-0 in last three games
The GACC Boys lost 58-34 at O'Neill Friday night and 52-40 at home to Hartington Cedar Catholic on Saturday.
The Eagles doubled up the Bluejays 18-9 in the first quarter. O'Neill outscored GACC 19-11 in the second quarter to go up 37-20 at halftime.
The Eagles outlasted the Bluejays 10-4 in the third quarter to lead 47-24 at the end of three.
O'Neill won the fourth quarter 11-10.
I thought GACC did a decent job responding against the Trojans. I felt the Bluejays played respectable in that game.
GACC (6-9) hosts Norfolk Catholic (3-13) in the Play-In Game of the Mid-State Conference Tournament on Saturday.
The Knights lost 75-60 at Wahoo last time out, and have yet to record a win in the 2017 portion of their schedule.
Norfolk Catholic has played a tough schedule, and is a better team than their record indicates though, in my opinion.
This should be a good game between the Bluejays and Knights.
I think GACC has a fairly good shot to win, but I could see Norfolk Catholic winning too.
It's a matter of which team can play better than they have lately and find a way to win.
The winner gets O'Neill at 6:15 Tuesday night at Northeast Community College, and I think both teams would like to have a chance to upset the Eagles.
The Bluejays may have a chance to hang with and upset O'Neill if they play well and handle their business against the Knights.
GACC has played well and shown signs of promise this year, it's just a matter of getting back to the level the Bluejays were playing at during their winning streak.
GACC is also at home on Saturday and so that should help them get over the hump against Norfolk Catholic.
I think the Bluejays will find a way to win and earn the right to take on O'Neill in the first round on Monday.
Anything can happen in these conference tournaments, and GACC has to be optimistic and believe they can beat anyone they play in this tournament.
The Bluejays have some big games after the tournament to end the regular season so it's time for GACC to get back to form.
Saturday's game is set to tip-off at 6:45 p.m.
The GACC Girls are 3-0 in their last three games, winning 69-31 at O'Neill Friday night, 72-51 at home against Hartington Cedar Catholic on Saturday, and 42-34 at Norfolk Catholic Monday night.
The Bluejays led the Eagles 19-9 at the end of one. GACC doubled up O'Neill 14-7 in the second quarter to take a 33-16 lead into the locker room.
The Bluejays outscored the Eagles 18-8 in the third quarter to go up 51-24 at the end of three.
GACC outlasted O'Neill 18-7 in the fourth quarter.
The Bluejays led the Trojans 18-12 at the end of one. GACC won the second quarter 19-18 to take a 37-30 lead into the locker room.
The Bluejays outscored Hartington Cedar Catholic 19-12 in the third quarter to lead 56-42 at the end of three.
GACC outlasted the Trojans 16-9 in the fourth quarter.
Both the Bluejays and Knights scored 12 points in the first quarter. GACC outscored Norfolk Catholic 13-5 in the second quarter to take a 25-17 lead into the locker room.
The Bluejays won the third quarter 9-6 to go up 34-23 at the end of three.
The Knights outlasted GACC 11-8 in the fourth quarter.
Maddie Knobbe had a game-high 18 points while Lauren Wobken totaled 8.
The Bluejays continue to play great basketball, and haven't really missed a beat without Hannah Hunke, who is injured.
GACC (14-1) takes on either the Knights (3-12) or Boone Central/Newman Grove (7-8) in the first round of the Mid-State Conference Tournament at Northeast Community College on Monday.
I don't know who's going to win between those two teams, but the Bluejays should be able to beat either team regardless of who wins.
I'm anticipating a semifinal matchup with Wayne next Thursday night. I would be surprised if the Bluejays didn't make it that far at least.
I honestly think this tournament will come down to GACC and Crofton once again.
I think GACC got the better side of the bracket as GACC won't have to go through the Warriors or Pierce to get to the championship.
I think GACC has what it takes to win this tournament again, but Crofton and Pierce will both be tough.
GACC needs their big guns to show up and play well. The Bluejays need major production from the likes of Knobbe and Wobken.
GACC is really hampered in that they are without Hunke, but I think the injury has only made the Bluejays stronger and brought them together.
GACC appears to be poised, primed, and ready for another state championship run, and the Bluejays will face top notch competition in this tournament, which should help prepare them for what lies ahead.
GACC has tough games against Pender and Pierce to end the regular season so GACC needs to play well in this tournament to get themselves ready for those games.
The Bluejays have to work out any last kinks they might have, and get ready for another title run.
I look for GACC to be ready to go on Monday regardless of who the opponent is. I think the Bluejays will be in top form, and will dominate whoever they play.
Monday's game is set to start at 6:15 p.m.
