Clarkson/Leigh Boys and Girls lose at GACC
The Clarkson/Leigh Boys lost 61-27 at GACC on Saturday.
The Bluejays led the Patriots 16-12 after one. GACC outscored Clarkson/Leigh 13-5 in the second quarter to take a 29-17 lead into the locker room.
The Bluejays won the third quarter 22-8 to go up 51-25 after three.
GACC outlasted the Patriots 10-2 in the fourth quarter.
Garrett Schroeder led the way with 7 points while Bradley Bunner pulled down 7 rebounds.
The Bluejays are a really good team, and were simply too much for Clarkson/Leigh in this game.
The Patriots (0-11) host Howells-Dodge (7-6) Thursday night.
The Jaguars lost 55-49 at home to BRLD Monday night.
Howells-Dodge has been up and down. When they're on they're on, and when they're off they're off.
Clarkson/Leigh is definitely hoping the Jaguars are off and not on top of their game.
With that said, the Patriots just need to come out and play well.
It has been a colossal struggle for Clarkson/Leigh all season, but Howells-Dodge is a rival, and if there's ever a game to get up and play for, this is it.
I think the Patriots have a chance to make this game more interesting than if it was a non rivalry game for Clarkson/Leigh, but it's still not going to be easy.
The Patriots just don't have a lot of depth, which limits what you can do in practice and in games in terms of rotating kids in and out.
At the end of the day that's an excuse though. Clarkson/Leigh has to find a way to overcome that and play better basketball.
I'm sure the Patriots would have liked to have played on Tuesday against Tekamah-Herman, but they didn't, and in a way I think that's a good thing because now Clarkson/Leigh can expend all that energy they've been building up on Thursday.
The Patriots have had plenty of time to rest and ample time to prepare for this game even with no game Tuesday so I fully expect Clarkson/Leigh to come out pumped and amped up, and ready to go.
The Patriots have to try and slow down Kade Hegemann, Dax VanLengen, and others, and get Anthony Bruhn, Schroeder, Bunner, and others all going offensively.
Clarkson/Leigh has struggled on both ends of the floor substantially this season so the Patriots' play needs to improve dramatically on both ends of the court for them to have a chance against the Jaguars, in my opinion.
Clarkson/Leigh is definitely capable of getting the job done, but it's not going to be easy by any stretch of the imagination.
The Patriots have to come ready to play and work hard, and let their play dictate the outcome of the game.
The Clarkson/Leigh Girls lost 50-30 at GACC on Saturday.
The Bluejays jumped out to a 9-7 lead after one. GACC outscored the Patriots 13-5 in the second quarter to take a 22-12 lead into the locker room.
The Bluejays outlasted Clarkson/Leigh 13-5 in the third quarter to go up 35-17 at the end of three.
GACC won the fourth quarter 15-13.
Ashlynn Novotny had a team-high 9 points and 8 rebounds while Hannah Kasik totaled 8 points.
I thought the Patriots played alright, at least in the first and fourth quarters. The middle quarters were a little rough on Clarkson/Leigh though.
The Patriots (4-8) host Humphrey St. Francis (6-7) Friday night.
The Flyers have lost four in a row, including a 51-43 decision at home to Burwell last time out.
Humphrey St. Francis also lost to Howells-Dodge by 27 while Clarkson/Leigh only lost to the Jaguars by 14.
I know scores don't mean everything, but if the Patriots play the way they are capable of, I think they have a shot to win this game.
The Flyers are reeling, and Clarkson/Leigh has to take advantage of that and play well.
The Patriots have been pretty good defensively, it's just their offense that needs more work.
Clarkson/Leigh has made a lot of strides on the offensive end over last season, but could use even more progress Friday night.
I look for the Patriots to have a good game offensively, and pick up the win.
Clarkson/Leigh is 3-0 in games when they put up over 50 points, so if the Patriots can get over 50 in this game, I like their chances.
Clarkson/Leigh has to be good offensively though. If the Patriots score in the 30's or 40's they could very well lose.
Clarkson/Leigh has to have their defense create turnovers and opportunities for their offense. The Patriots' offense has to feed off their defense.
I don't know how much offense Clarkson/Leigh can generate without their defense doing something to contribute to the offensive possession.
Perhaps the key to the game though is being solid in the half court game. I think the Patriots' half court offense may need to step up and come through for Clarkson/Leigh to win.
I still think the Patriots' best offense is a good defense though.
Clarkson/Leigh has to maximize their possessions on offense and limit Humphrey St. Francis's chances on offense.
Rebounding will be important for the Patriots, both on the offensive and defensive ends.
Contesting shots, grabbing loose balls, getting to the free throw line, and taking care of the ball will all be important as well.
