Stanton Boys 1-2 in last three games; Girls 3-0 in same stretch

The Stanton Boys are 1-2 in their last three games, losing 61-59 at home to Oakland-Craig on a last second shot Friday night, and 59-29 at Logan View/Scribner-Snyder on Saturday, before topping Plainview 82-63 on the road Tuesday night.

The Mustangs led the Knights 14-13 after one. Stanton won the second quarter 19-16 to take a 33-29 lead into the locker room.

Oakland-Craig outscored the Mustangs 19-15 in the third quarter to tie the game at 48 at the end of three.

The Knights outlasted Stanton 13-11 in the fourth quarter.

Myles Nickolite led the way with a game-high of 36 points and 10 rebounds, good enough for a double-double. Trey Erbst added 9 points.

The Raiders doubled up the Mustangs 16-8 in the first quarter. Logan View/Scribner-Snyder outscored Stanton 19-8 in the second quarter to take a 35-16 lead into the locker room.

The Raiders outlasted the Mustangs 18-4 in the third quarter to lead 53-20 after three.

Stanton won the fourth quarter 9-6.

Erbst led the way with 8 points while Nickolite totaled 7.

The Mustangs held a 22-17 lead on the Pirates at the end of one. Stanton won the second quarter 15-10 to take a 37-27 lead into the locker room.

Both teams scored 18 points in the third quarter, and the score after three was 55-45 in favor of the Mustangs.

Stanton outscored Plainview 27-18 in the fourth quarter.

Nickolite poured in 26 points while Erbst notched 17. Broderick Sieh totaled 12 while Hunter Stallbaum chipped in 11.

I think the Mustangs showed what type of team they can be with their play against Oakland-Craig and Plainview. I'm willing to bet the buzzer beater on Friday kind of led to Stanton being a little down and out of it on Saturday.

The Mustangs (3-9) host Boone Central/Newman Grove (6-5) Friday night.

The Cardinals lost 68-65 at Wayne in overtime on Saturday.

This is another tough team on the schedule and another chance for Stanton to step up, make a statement, and pick up a win.

The Mustangs need the kind of scoring they got on Tuesday every time they take the floor.

Sieh and Stallbaum in particular have been MIA for the most part this season, but perhaps the way they got things going offensively on Tuesday will lead to big things the rest of the season.

The game being in Stanton should help the Mustangs out quite a bit I would say.

Stanton came so close to getting the job done against the Knights the last time they were at home so perhaps the Mustangs can get the job done this time around.

Stanton has another tough game at Wakefield on Saturday so if the Mustangs could find a way to pick up two wins this weekend it would be absolutely huge.

The slate isn't easy for Stanton through the East Husker Conference Tournament, but if the Mustangs could pick up a couple off wins this weekend it could make all the difference in Stanton's play down the stretch, in my opinion.

It's simply a matter of the Mustangs becoming more consistent and playing better basketball.

Stanton has to find a way to get over the hump, and get their season on track.

If the Mustangs can't get things going by the time the East Husker Conference Tournament rolls around they should pick up a few wins after that to end the regular season, but at the time it might be too little too late for Stanton.

The Mustangs have to play with a sense of urgency and purpose this weekend.

Stanton has to play as if their season is on the line because at some point it will end not in a way the Mustangs had hoped for if they don't start playing better.

If Stanton wants to be a factor in their sub-district, and not be a bunny bracket game participant, they need to get things going.

I think the Mustangs have made strides in recent games so we'll see what Stanton can do this weekend.

The Stanton Girls are 3-0 in their last three games, downing Oakland-Craig 46-32 at home Friday night, Logan View/Scribner-Snyder 49-26 on the road Saturday, and Plainview 51-18 on the road Tuesday night.

The Mustangs led the Knights 9-5 at the end of one. Stanton outscored Oakland-Craig 14-2 in the second quarter to take a 23-7 lead into the locker room.

The Knights tripled up the Mustangs 18-6 in the third quarter to make it a 29-25 game at the end of three.

Stanton outlasted Oakland-Craig 17-7 in the fourth quarter.

MacKenzie Brandl led the way with 12 points while Bree Burtwhistle totaled 11. Hannah Heppner added a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds while Jessie Brandl notched 9 points.

The Mustangs blanked the Raiders 10-0 in the first quarter. Stanton won the second quarter 15-10 to lead 25-10 at halftime.

Both teams scored 9 points in the third quarter, and the score after three was 34-19 in favor of the Mustangs.

Stanton outscored Logan View/Scribner-Snyder 15-7 in the fourth quarter.

Jessie Brandl totaled 15 points while Heppner contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds for another double-double. MacKenzie Brandl pitched in 9 rebounds.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 19-1 lead on the Pirates at the end of one. Stanton quadrupled up Plainview 16-4 in the second quarter to go up 35-5 at halftime,

The Mustangs outlasted the Pirates 16-6 in the third quarter to lead 51-11 at the end of three.

Plainview shutout Stanton 7-0 in the fourth quarter.

MacKenzie Brandl led the way with 17 points while Jessie Brandl and Jaiden Hartl posted 15 and 9, respectively.

The Mustangs have continued to play great basketball. Stanton has to be looked at as a top contender in C-2.

The Mustangs (11-1) host Boone Central/Newman Grove (6-5) Friday night.

The Cardinals lost 56-47 at Wayne on Saturday.

BC/NG is a decent team, but Stanton should have no trouble winning.

The Mustangs have been very good defensively all season long, and their offense has done enough to win games.

I don't expect Stanton to blow the Cardinals out, but the Mustangs should come out on the winning side of things when it's all said and done.

Stanton has two tough road games at BRLD and Twin River before the East Husker Conference Tournament so the Mustangs want to keep playing well and build momentum prior to those games.

I think Stanton is a very good team, but I think the Mustangs' best basketball is ahead of them.

If Stanton can become a more effective offensive ball club they could be even better than they already are.

The Mustangs are a great defensive team, but I think there is room for improvement from an offensive standpoint.

Stanton is already doing wonderful and great things this season, but if their offense could start clicking on all cylinders, the Mustangs could legitimately beat a Crofton or whoever else to win a state title, in my opinion.

Stanton is already one of the top teams in C-2, but I think they will need better offensive play down the line to beat some of the tough teams left on their schedule and any quality teams they see in the postseason.

The Mustangs have a great thing going right now, and need to keep things going.

I think Stanton is in shape to do just that, and continue to build upon their already impressive record.

The Mustangs have come so far since the start of last season, and are a much improved team from last year, in my opinion, as I feel Stanton has been more consistent and prepared this year.

With this said, I don't see the Mustangs losing prior to their games with the Wolverines and Titans.
