Emerson-Hubbard Boys 1-1 in last two games; Girls 0-2 in same span

The Emerson-Hubbard Boys are 1-1 in their last two games, losing 67-37 at home to Wynot on Saturday before winning 60-51 at Homer Tuesday night for their first win of the year.

The Blue Devils jumped out to a 22-7 lead on the Pirates at the end of one. Wynot doubled up Emerson-Hubbard 16-8 in the second quarter to take a 38-15 lead into the locker room.

The Blue Devils outscored the Pirates 14-8 in the third quarter to go up 52-23 at the end of three.

Wynot won the fourth quarter 15-14.

Taylor Donner led the way with 15 points while Joshua Sebade notched 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Emerson-Hubbard held a 14-10 lead on the Knights at the end of one. The Pirates won the second quarter 10-9 to go up 24-19 at halftime.

Homer won the third quarter 19-18 to make it a 42-38 game at the end of three in favor of Emerson-Hubbard.

The Pirates outscored the Knights 18-13 in the fourth quarter.

Jacob Kneifl and Nolan Belt notched 15 points apiece to lead the way. Sebade added 9 points and 9 rebounds while Spencer Burcham pitched in 8 points.

It had to be a great feeling for Emerson-Hubbard to get the monkey off their back and win a game. The Pirates had a lot of kids step up, which was a really neat thing to see.

Emerson-Hubbard (1-12) battles Wakefield (10-4) at home Friday night.

The Trojans won 68-50 at home over Stanton on Saturday.

Wakefield is certainly a quality and tough team, but perhaps the Pirates can hang with them if Emerson-Hubbard gets the same kind of offensive production from their players that they got in the Homer game.

The Pirates may need to play better defense than they did against the Knights, but if Emerson-Hubbard's offense is on again they just might be able to outscore the Trojans.

At the very least the Pirates have to feel good about themselves and optimistic.

Emerson-Hubbard has to be riding somewhat of an emotional high right now given what happened Tuesday night.

The Pirates should also have an advantage in preparation as Wakefield was playing BRLD Thursday night.

Emerson-Hubbard just has to have a quiet confidence amongst themselves, and go out and do their thing and take care of business.

The Pirates have to play with some confidence and swagger given what happened Tuesday night.

Emerson-Hubbard is no longer a winless team. The Pirates have now tasted victory and gotten the monkey off their back.

Now it's a matter of building off that first win and finding a way to pick up another one.

Emerson-Hubbard has Pender and Allen next week so even if the Pirates don't win Friday night they may be able to win both next week.

Playing well, competing hard, and keeping things close with the Trojans would go a long ways in making that happen.

The Emerson-Hubbard Girls lost 51-25 at home to Wynot on Saturday, and 66-53 at Homer Tuesday night.

The Blue Devils led the Pirates 13-6 at the end of one. Wynot won the second quarter 12-8 to take a 25-14 lead into the locker room.

The Blue Devils outscored Emerson-Hubbard 15-4 in the third quarter to go up 40-18 at the end of three.

Wynot outlasted the Pirates 11-7 in the fourth quarter.

The Knights led Emerson-Hubbard 15-13 after one. Homer doubled up the Pirates 18-9 in the second quarter to take a 33-22 lead into the locker room.

Emerson-Hubbard outlasted the Knights 20-15 in the third quarter to make it a 48-42 game at the end of three.

Homer outscored the Pirates 18-11 in the fourth quarter.

Melanie Gentrup led the way with 17 points while Courtney Bokemper and Caleigh Mackling added 14 and 8, respectively. Taylor Daum notched 7 rebounds.

Emerson-Hubbard's offense and defense let them down against Wynot. The offense was much better against Homer, but the defense let the Pirates down again.

Emerson-Hubbard (3-10) hosts Wakefield (5-9) Friday night.

The Trojans lost 41-29 at home to Stanton on Saturday.

Wakefield just beat the Pirates 39-28 in the Bob Clough Post Holiday Tournament on Friday, January 6th.

If anything Emerson-Hubbard isn't playing as good as they were, and the Trojans are playing better basketball than they were at the time when they beat the Pirates.

We'll see what happens Friday night, but I think Emerson-Hubbard is going to have their hands full with Wakefield.

The Pirates need to play the way they did offensively against Homer, and play the way they did defensively against the Trojans the first time around.

If Emerson-Hubbard can do those things they may be able to come away with the win.

It's getting to be that time of year when anything can happen and upsets occur so the Pirates have to have that sort of mindset.

Emerson-Hubbard is also the defending Class D-1 State Champions and has to get ready to defend their title.

I don't think it's fair to say the Pirates are gearing up for another title run, but I'm sure Emerson-Hubbard is doing their best to make another run at state.

Chances are the Pirates won't be back at the state tournament, but it's all about the mindset Emerson-Hubbard has to have.

The Pirates are still defending champs until someone dethrones them, and has to keep that in mind the rest of the season.

That mindset starts with the Wakefield game on Friday if it hasn't already.
