Howells-Dodge Boys take 3rd at Homer Holiday Tournament; Girls lose both games
The Howells-Dodge Boys Basketball Team lost 60-49 to GACC on Saturday, December 28th at the Homer Holiday Tournament before winning 76-35 over Homer in last Monday's 3rd place game.
The Bluejays led the Jaguars 14-10 after one, and outscored Howells-Dodge 20-9 in the 2nd quarter to take a 34-19 lead into the locker room.
GACC won the 3rd quarter 14-10 to go up 48-29 at the end of three.
The Jaguars outscored the Bluejays 20-12 in the 4th quarter.
Howells-Dodge led the Knights 19-11 after one. The Jaguars outscored Homer 16-7 in the 2nd quarter to go up 35-18 at halftime.
Howells-Dodge won the 3rd quarter 22-10 to extend their lead to 57-28 at the end of three.
The Jaguars outscored the Knights 19-7 in the 4th quarter.
Nice win over Homer following the setback to GACC.
Howells-Dodge (6-4) takes on Humphrey St. Francis (9-0) on the road Friday night.
The Flyers won 82-38 at home over Nebraska Christian on Saturday.
An opportunity for the Jaguars to beat a good team and pick up a big win.
I think it all starts on the defensive end of the floor for Howells-Dodge.
The Jaguars need to play the type of defense they have in their wins.
When Howells-Dodge struggles defensively, the team struggles to win games.
Offense is important too, but it seems like the Jaguars have been pretty strong offensively when the defense has been there.
Howells-Dodge beat Pierce in the season opener, but hasn't really beaten a top team and contender as of yet.
A win over Humphrey St. Francis would make you go "Wow, what a win."
The Jaguars have beaten who they're supposed to so far this year, but with the exception of the Bluejays, haven't really beaten a top team on their schedule.
All of Howells-Dodge's losses have come by double digits.
I just think the Jaguars could be better, that is all.
Howells-Dodge is a solid team, but so far the Jaguars haven't captured the greatness they did last year.
There's a lot of season left to go though, and so perhaps the Jaguars will make a run before season's end.
I sure hope so because it was really fun watching Howells-Dodge down at state last year.
I feel like the Jaguars are getting to the part of their schedule where they could make a run too.
The end of the regular season will really test Howells-Dodge.
We will see what the Jaguars are made of come that time.
All Howells-Dodge should be worried about right now though is the game with Humphrey St. Francis.
The Howells-Dodge Girls fell 61-42 to GACC in the Homer Holiday Tournament on Saturday, December 28th before falling 55-32 to Homer in last Monday's 3rd place game.
The Bluejays led the Jaguars 20-14 at the end of one, and won the 2nd quarter 15-13 to take a 35-27 lead into the locker room.
GACC outscored Howells-Dodge 11-4 in the 3rd quarter to lead 46-31 at the end of three.
The Bluejays won the 4th quarter 15-11.
Janessa Schmidt had 14 points while Brooklyn Macholan totaled 9. Riley Pokorny added 8 points and 7 rebounds.
The Jaguars led the Knights 12-11 at the end of one. Homer won the 2nd quarter 11-8 to pull in front 22-20 at halftime.
The Knights outscored Howells-Dodge 13-6 in the 3rd quarter to go up 35-26 at the end of three.
Homer outscored the Knights 20-6 in the 4th quarter.
Macholan led the way with 8 points.
I was surprised the Jaguars lost to Homer the way they did.
Howells-Dodge (1-9) takes on Humphrey St. Francis (8-2) on the road Friday night.
The Flyers lost 57-54 at Norfolk Catholic Tuesday night.
The Jaguars definitely have their work cut out for them in this one.
Howells-Dodge is going to need a great and inspired effort to come out on top.
The Jaguars are going to have to play their best game to win.
Howells-Dodge has had a tough year with lots of struggles, but the Jaguars have to keep battling and persevering.
Howells-Dodge has to come out and play tough and get ready for what should be a few wins in a row after Friday.
The Jaguars square off with Plainview, Lutheran High Northeast, and Wisner-Pilger, and I think those three games can be wins.
Honestly though Howells-Dodge has to be better than they have been.
Losing to Homer by 23 was a surprise to me.
The Jaguars played GACC tougher the game before.
Howells-Dodge should have at least gotten 3rd in the Homer Holiday Tournament.
Their offense just has really let them down, and the defense hasn't been there all year either.
The Jaguars have to persevere and step up and be the best version of themselves though.
I don't know if it's fair to say Howells-Dodge has underachieved and underperformed, but the Jaguars have definitely struggled, and I didn't see Howells-Dodge struggling the way they have.
There's a lot of season left, but the Jaguars have to try and make a push here in the second half of the season.
Howells-Dodge has to come out and play with a sense of urgency and purpose, and it all starts Friday night.
The Jaguars have to have more pep in their step, and must play better than they have all year if they want to upset the Flyers.
