West Point-Beemer Boys lose to Battle Creek and Schuyler, beat Tekamah-Herman; Girls knock off all three

The West Point-Beemer Boys Basketball Team lost 62-29 at Battle Creek last Tuesday night in action aired on 107.9 the Bull before falling 48-32 at Schuyler last Thursday night, and winning 76-53 at home over Tekamah-Herman on Saturday.

Battle Creek raced out to an 18-3 lead in the 1st quarter before West Point-Beemer went on an 8-0 to make it an 18-11 game at the end of the 1st quarter.

The Braves outscored the Cadets 17-8 in the 2nd quarter to take a 35-19 lead into the locker room.

Battle Creek outscored West Point-Beemer 16-6 in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 51-25 at the end of three.

The Braves won the 4th quarter 11-4.

The Cadets were led by Miguel Perez, who had a team-high 9 points. Zach Vander Griend added 7.

The Warriors got out to a 13-6 lead at the end of one. Schuyler won the 2nd quarter 12-9 to take a 25-15 lead into the locker room.

The Warriors won the 3rd quarter 11-9 to increase their lead to 36-24 at the end of three.

Schuyler won the 4th quarter 12-8.

The Cadets led the Tigers 20-12 at the end of one, and won the 2nd quarter 19-16 to take a 39-28 lead into the locker room.

West Point-Beemer outscored Tekamah-Herman 19-11 in the 3rd quarter to increase their lead to 58-39 at the end of three.

The Cadets won the 4th quarter 18-14.

Good response and win for West Point-Beemer on Saturday.

The Cadets (3-11) travel to Genoa to take on Twin River (10-5) Friday night.

The Titans won 44-37 at Wisner-Pilger Tuesday night.

Twin River is playing the best basketball they have all season long lately as they have won five out of their last six.

The Titans come into this game with lots of confidence and momentum that is for sure.

West Point-Beemer is going to have to come out and play a great and exceptional game to win Friday night.

It all starts on the defensive end of the floor for the Cadets too.

West Point-Beemer has to match Twin River's defensive intensity, and really get after things.

It's also important for the Cadets to play the way they did on Saturday offensively.

West Point-Beemer really struggled to score against both Battle Creek and Schuyler, but found some things that worked on Saturday against Tekamah-Herman.

The Cadets have to build on those things and continue to grow and improve.

West Point-Beemer has a tough stretch of games prior to the East Husker Conference Tournament.

These next four games are big for Conference Tournament seeding though, in my opinion.

The Cadets could really help themselves by performing well against Twin River and Logan View/Scribner-Snyder in particular.

Both of those teams are very solid though so it won't be easy to beat them whatsoever.

West Point-Beemer just has to focus on picking up a win over the Titans right now though.

Twin River is on a hot streak right now, and it's going to take a great game from the Cadets to cool them down.

If West Point-Beemer plays the way they did Saturday though then a win is certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

It's going to take outstanding effort on the Cadets' part though if West Point-Beemer is to win.

The West Point-Beemer Girls won 47-32 at Battle Creek last Tuesday night in action aired on 107.9 the Bull before winning 52-17 at Schuyler last Thursday night, and 59-19 at home over Tekamah-Herman on Saturday.

The Bravettes led 12-11 at the end of one only to see West Point-Beemer outscore them 21-13 in the 2nd quarter to take a 32-25 lead into the locker room.

The Cadets held Battle Creek to 7 total second half points, including 3 in the 4th quarter.

The Bravettes won the 3rd quarter 4-3 to make it a 35-29 game at the end of three before West Point-Beemer quadrupled up Battle Creek 12-3 in the final stanza.

Head Coach Taylor Shepard says her team's defense came up big. "All season long we've really been stressing to our girls the importance of defense, and using that to create some offensive opportunities for us. And tonight was no different. I thought the girls really came out and executed. Hannah Landholm stepped up and got a few big boards and stops down the stretch. But it was just great to see all of our girls step up and provide that great defensive pressure."

A big reason for the Cadets' success was getting to the free throw line as West Point-Beemer was 13-17 in the 1st half and 18-23 for the game.

Sidney Swanson had a game-high 24 points for West Point-Beemer, including a 14-16 performance from the charity stripe that saw her go 9-10 in the 1st half and score 9 of her 19 first half points that way. Jadyn Meiergerd was also in double figures for West Point-Beemer, scoring 12.

Shepard says Meiergerd came up big. "The biggest thing about Jadyn is she's really this whole season been working on really making her game well rounded. Early in the season her shots weren't falling, so she looked to create, driving to the basket and used her defense to really help the team out. And so it's really great to see her have some success this part of the season as she's been doing all the little things for us."

The Cadets went up 25-2 at the end of one on the Warriors. West Point-Beemer outscored Schuyler 11-3 in the 2nd quarter to take a 36-5 lead into the locker room.

The Cadets won the 3rd quarter 14-6 to extend their lead to 50-11 at the end of three.

The Warriors tripled up West Point-Beemer 6-2 in the 4th quarter.

Swanson led the way with 19 points while Rachel Groth totaled 13.

The Cadets got out to an 18-7 lead on the Tigers at the end of one, and outscored Tekamah-Herman 14-5 in the 2nd quarter to take a 32-12 lead into the locker room.

West Point-Beemer outscored the Tigers 19-5 in the 3rd quarter to go up 51-17 at the end of three.

The Cadets quadrupled up Tekamah-Herman 8-2 in the 4th quarter.

Swanson had 18 points and 7 rebounds while Jadyn Meiergerd totaled 15 points. Groth was also in double figures with 10 while Emily Toelle notched 7.

Great stretch of games for West Point-Beemer, who has won 6 out of their last 7.

The Cadets (11-4) battle Twin River (3-12) on the road Friday night.

The Titans won 45-44 at Wisner-Pilger Tuesday night.

Twin River had a slow start to the season, but the Titans have played better in the second half of the season.

West Point-Beemer has to be wary of that, and must come out and play well.

The Cadets should win, but also realize that if they don't bring their best and aren't on top of their game that anyone is beatable on any given night.

Not that West Point-Beemer will lose, but the Cadets can't take Twin River lightly.

West Point-Beemer needs to play the way they did last week.

As long as the Cadets do that then they should be fine.

West Point-Beemer has to play tougher defense than the Titans, and must control pace and tempo.

Both teams kind of want a defensive, half court oriented game, but maybe this is a game the Cadets try and get out and run more offensively.

West Point-Beemer did an excellent job controlling pace and tempo against Battle Creek last Tuesday and getting to the free throw line really was the difference in the game.

The Cadets need to come out and put their foot on the throttle early, and stake claim to a big lead against Twin River.

Swanson, Meiergerd, Groth, and others need to play great games for West Point-Beemer.

The Cadets also host Logan View/Scribner-Snyder on Saturday so it should be two big wins for West Point-Beemer this weekend.

The Cadets have Pierce and Wayne next week, but should only be worried about Twin River right now.

And after Friday then West Point-Beemer should focus on the Raiders, and then after Saturday they can worry about the Bluejays.

The Cadets have to keep it up and must keep playing well leading up to the East Husker Conference Tournament.
