The North Bend Central Boys Basketball Team won 58-52 at Oakland-Craig Friday night in action aired on 107.9 the Bull before downing Madison 73-54 at home Tuesday night.
Oakland-Craig went on a 7-0 to start, and led 9-2. But North Bend Central went on a 7-0 run of their own and scored the final 11 points of the first quarter to take a 16-13 lead.
Jaxon Wietfeld took over for the Tigers in the second quarter, scoring eight points in helping NBC to a 31-23 halftime lead.
Oakland-Craig came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring NBC 14-11, but the Tigers still held a 42-37 advantage after three.
A key stat throughout the first three quarters were the charge fouls called against NBC on offense. The Tigers had six called against them in the first three frames, and seven in the game. And Oakland-Craig had three charges called on them. Both teams were playing very fast and very aggressive, which created an exciting atmosphere, but also resulted in the unusually high amount of fouls on offense.
Oakland-Craig was able to pull with three points at 49-46 with just over three minutes left in the game.
North Bend Central then went on a 6-0 run to lead 55-46. The Tigers made free throws down the stretch and were leading 58-49 when O-C’s Colton Thomsen made a three pointer as time expired.
Wietfeld and Austin Endorf each had 15 points to lead NBC, with Breckin Peters adding 12.
Good win for the Tigers on Friday, but the game with the Dragons was too close for comfort in the 3rd quarter.
North Bend Central (16-0) takes on Wisner-Pilger (10-5) on the road Thursday night.
The Gators won 72-38 at Clarkson/Leigh Tuesday night.
You can bet Wisner-Pilger will give the Tigers their best shot so NBC has to be ready.
The Tigers have to be focused and ready to play for four quarters.
I'm guessing North Bend Central kind of let the foot off the accelerator against Madison, at least that's what I would assumed happened.
The Tigers have to play hard for 32 minutes and must turn in a complete game performance Thursday night.
Coach Duane Mendlik is the winningest Head Coach in Nebraska High School Basketball History and you know the Gators will have a really good game plan.
North Bend Central has to avoid the upset and what would be a tough loss heading into the East Husker Conference Tournament.
The Tigers really want to win their last game before the Conference Tournament begins I'm sure.
These two teams could very well meet again in the Quarterfinals of the Tournament, scheduled for Tuesday.
It seems like teams often times rematch in these conference tournaments after meeting in the regular season just a game or two before the Tournament begins.
So North Bend Central could very well have to go through Wisner-Pilger a second time to get to the Semifinals, but we will see what happens.
First things first though, the Tigers have to worry about beating the Gators on Thursday.
Wisner-Pilger is a great team when they are on and they are fun to watch and hard to stop.
It really depends which Gator team shows up though.
If North Bend Central gets the team that lost to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family and Twin River they should roll.
But if the Tigers get the team that dominated Pender and Clarkson/Leigh then we could have ourselves a barn burner.
The North Bend Central Girls lost 40-39 at Oakland-Craig Friday night in action aired on 107.9 the Bull in a game that came down to the final possession before routing Madison 58-18 at home Tuesday night.
The game with the Knights featured a match up of previously unbeatens, with both teams heading in at 15-0. The game was tightly contested throughout, and the game was tied 10-10 at the end of the first quarter.
The Knights were able to hold NBC to just six points in the second quarter, and Oakland-Craig took a 22-16 lead into halftime.
Oakland-Craig stretched their lead to 10 early in the second half, but they were eventually held to just five points in the third quarter, and the Tigers didn’t score in the third until almost two minutes left, but they went on a run late in the frame, adding nine points, making the score Oakland-Craig 27, NBC 25 after three.
The Knights started to create a little separation in the fourth, but NBC went on a small scoring run, and cut the score to 40-39 with 9.6 seconds to go.
The Tigers had the basketball on their side of the floor down one with 9.6 seconds left and a chance to win the game. A shot from Sydney Emanuel missed of the right side of the rim and time expired, preserving the victory for Oakland-Craig.
Kaitlyn Emanuel scored 13 points off the bench for NBC, and Lauren Emanuel had 10.
The Tigers led the Dragons 24-6 at the end of the 1st quarter, and outscored Madison 16-5 in the 2nd quarter to take a 40-11 lead into the locker room.
North Bend Central tripled up the Dragons 12-4 in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 52-15 at the end of three.
The Tigers tripled up Madison 6-3 in the 4th quarter.
A gut wrenching loss to the Knights no doubt.
North Bend Central (16-1) battles Wisner-Pilger (3-13) on the road Thursday night.
The Gators lost 49-39 at Clarkson/Leigh Tuesday night.
Wisner-Pilger has played well for about the last three weeks or so.
The Gators have started playing better basketball than they were earlier in the year.
Still though you would think the Tigers would be able to win this one.
This is a game where you hope to build a big advantage early and put Wisner-Pilger away as quickly as possible.
The last thing North Bend Central wants is for the Gators to hang around.
Wisner-Pilger is a tough, scrappy team though and they won't be easy to take down.
The Gators will be tough, especially on their home floor.
Wisner-Pilger has nothing to lose in this game really.
The Tigers have to play the way they did on Tuesday night.
Roll big in this one and set the stage for the East Husker Conference Tournament.
North Bend Central could very well get their rematch with Oakland-Craig in the EHC Tournament Championship Game.
We will see what happens, but I could definitely see that happening.
The Tigers have to play well and strong from the start against the Gators.
North Bend Central has to turn in a great and outstanding performance Thursday night.
The Tigers need to keep doing what they have all season, and turn in another dominating performance against Wisner-Pilger.
North Bend Central has to be tough and tenacious from start to finish, and has to play suffocating, tough, in your face defense and cannot let up.
