BRLD Boys and Girls 3-1 in last four games

The BRLD Boys Basketball Team is 3-1 in their last four contests, falling 50-42 at Ponca on Thursday, December 21st, before downing GACC 54-34 at their own Holiday Tournament Friday night, and Howells-Dodge 62-54 in the championship game on Saturday. The Wolverines followed that up with an 89-24 win at Cedar Bluffs Tuesday night.

The Indians led BRLD 13-11 after one, but the Wolverines won the 2nd quarter 16-15 to get within a single point at 28-27 at halftime.

BRLD outscored Ponca 14-11 in the 3rd quarter to take a 41-39 lead into the 4th quarter.

The Wolverines were outlasted 11-1 in the 4th quarter.

Head Coach Cory Meyer on the loss. "I just wish we could of finished the Ponca game better than what we did. And that's a game we just decided to play the game to not lose it instead of playing to win it. And it came back to bite us, and we just didn't get aggressive that whole 4th quarter, and I think we only scored one point. And definitely a game I'd like to get back. But yeah we got a lot of tough games coming up and a lot of games coming up."

BRLD went up 14-4 on the Bluejays at the end of one before doubling up GACC 12-6 in the 2nd quarter to take a 26-10 lead into the locker room.

The Bluejays won the 3rd quarter 17-16 to make it a 42-27 game at the end of three.

The Wolverines outscored GACC 12-7 in the 4th quarter.

BRLD jumped on the Jaguars 17-5 at the end of one. The Wolverines won the 2nd quarter 17-14 to take a 34-19 lead into the locker room.

BRLD outscored Howells-Dodge 10-8 in the 3rd quarter to go up 44-27 at the end of three.

The Jaguars notched 27 points in the 4th quarter compared to 18 for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines surged to a 14-0 1st quarter lead  on the Wildcats, and led 24-4 at the end of one. BRLD outscored Cedar Bluffs 26-8 in the 2nd quarter to take a 50-12 lead into the locker room.

The Wolverines won the 3rd quarter 15-7 to go up 65-19 at the end of three.

BRLD dominated the 4th quarter as well, putting up 24 points and holding the Wildcats to just 5.

Will Gatzemeyer and Braxton Bargmann had 12 points apiece to lead the Wolverines, who improved to 8-1 with the win. Kenyan Lovejoy chipped in 10 while Darwin Snyder and Trent Gatewood notched 9 and 8, respectively. Dylan Beutler and Michael Snyder totaled 7 each.

Meyer says the Wolverines have really made a commitment on the defensive end of the floor this season. "Yeah we've been really focusing on our defense this year. And we're pretty proud of the way the guys have been doing that. And it's quite an adjustment going to a man-to-man. Last year running a lot of 2-3 and 1-3-1. And I think the kids are just moving, and they're hungry and they want it."

BRLD (8-1) faces Tekamah-Herman (0-8) in Lyons Friday night.

The Tigers lost 65-19 to Parkview Christian at the Nebraska Wesleyan Holiday Tournament on Friday.

It has been a difficult season for Tekamah-Herman and a great year for the Wolverines.

This game figures to be a total mismatch just like the Cedar Bluffs game was.

This is one of those games where the Wolverines have to come out and get after things defensively, and put the Tigers away early.

Everyone on BRLD's roster played Tuesday night, and I look for that to happen for the Wolverines again Friday night.

BRLD should be able to win in similar fashion to Tuesday.

The Wolverines have to come out and play hard, execute, and run the floor well.

BRLD can't take Tekamah-Herman lightly, and think they have it won before the game even starts.

The Wolverines still have to show up ready to play, and must play fast and physical, much like they did against the Wildcats.

Lovejoy and Johnson have to continue to be big forces on the boards, and Vogt and others have to dribble penetrate and shoot 3's well.

BRLD is so deep, and I think the Wolverines could of beaten Cedar Bluffs with their backups if they had wanted to.

All of the Wolverine players are good, and BRLD certainly has a good and nice mixture of players.

There's really not a lot of drop off between the starting five and the next five, in my opinion, and I think the Wolverines have a chance to do a lot of damage yet this season.

Ponca is a great team, and BRLD just about beat them in their house, and that's really saying something in itself.

The Wolverines will get their shot at the likes of  West Point-Beemer, Oakland-Craig, Winnebago, Wisner-Pilger, and Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, but for now BRLD has to focus on taking care of business against Tekamah-Herman.

The Wolverines have to take every opponent seriously, and must keep getting better.

So far, I think BRLD is on the right track.

The BRLD Girls Basketball Team won 49-29 at Ponca on Thursday, December 21st before falling 53-52 on a last second shot to Howells-Dodge at their own Holiday Tournament on Friday. The Wolverines downed Homer 74-30 in Saturday's consolation before winning 67-18 at Cedar Bluffs Tuesday night.

The Wolverines shutout the Indians 9-0 in the 1st quarter. Ponca won the 2nd quarter 15-14 to make it a 23-15 game at halftime.

BRLD outscored the Indians 14-4 in the 3rd quarter to go up 37-19 at the end of three.

The Wolverines won the 4th quarter 12-10.

Vicki Gatzemeyer and Mariah Petersen had 13 points apiece to lead BRLD while Kelsey Larsen scored 8.

The Wolverines got out to a 17-12 lead on the Jaguars after one. Howells-Dodge won the 2nd quarter 12-10 to cut the deficit to 3 at 27-24 at halftime.

BRLD won the 3rd quarter 15-14 to go up 42-38 at the end of three.

The Jaguars outscored the Wolverines 15-10 in the 4th quarter.

Paige Peters had a team-high 15 points for BRLD while Gatzemeyer and Sophia Henneman chipped in 9 apiece.

The Wolverines jumped on the Knights 20-9 after one. BRLD outscored Homer 22-8 in the 2nd quarter to take a 42-17 lead into the locker room.

The Wolverines outscored the Knights 19-6 in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 38 at 61-23 at the end of three.

BRLD won the 4th quarter 13-7.

Henneman led the way with 21 points while Petersen scored 12. Gatzemeyer and Brandi Simonsen added 10 each.

BRLD jumped out to a 10-0 run on the Wildcats and led 24-8 after the 1st quarter before starting the 2nd quarter on an 18-0 run to build a 42-8 lead.

The Wolverines held a 42-12 halftime advantage.

BRLD outscored the Wildcats 16-2 in the 3rd quarter to lead 58-14 at the end of three.

The Wolverines won the 4th quarter 9-4.

BRLD's full-court press gave Cedar Bluffs fits as the Wildcats had 34 turnovers, unofficially.

"Yeah I was pleased with how we came out defensively. We pressed them, and forced them into some turnovers early in that 1st quarter," BRLD Head Coach Rod Peters said.

Gatzemeyer and Peters each had 12 points to lead BRLD, who improved to 8-2 on the season. Peters scored all of her points on 3's in about a two-minute span in the 2nd quarter. Kelsey Larsen chipped in 9 while Caragan Tietz registered 8.

Peters says it was a balanced effort. "We were. And all year we have been pretty balanced. We've had kids that are able to score. I was pleased that a lot of people got in the scorebook today, but you got to do a better job of finishing out games. There were periods of the game today where we really struggled and turned the ball over."

BRLD (8-2) hosts Tekamah-Herman (3-9) in Lyons Friday night.

The Tigers lost 64-40 at home to Omaha Roncalli Tuesday night.

Tekamah-Herman is an improved team as they're 3-3 in their last six games following an 0-6 start.

The Tigers appear to have started to figure some things out, and figure to challenge the Wolverines.

BRLD should win, but the Wolverines have two tough games this week against Tekamah-Herman and West Point-Beemer.

Both teams figure to give BRLD all they can handle, but I think the Wolverines stand a good chance to win both contests.

The tougher of the two is probably the Cadets, but the Tigers figure to be tough as well.

The biggest thing for BRLD is to press the way they did against Cedar Bluffs, and shoot a high percentage.

Peters, Petersen, Gatzemeyer, Henneman, Simonsen, Larsen, and Tiahna Bonneau all have to be on for the Wolverines.

BRLD has a lot of talented players, and they're all performing well and at a high level so far this season.

The Wolverines have to keep it up, and must continue to play well to keep having success.

The Wolverines let one get away against Howells-Dodge, but otherwise BRLD is playing great basketball.

The Wolverines are at home for both games this weekend, and have to protect the house, or in BRLD's case, houses.

The Wolverines can't let either the Tigers or Cadets come in and beat them on their home floor.

BRLD has to come out and play well for 4 quarters both nights, and play suffocating pressure defense, and shoot lights out from the field.

The Wolverines also have to run the floor well, and get out in transition as much as possible.

BRLD has to try and speed up both teams, and play fast if at all possible.

I think the Wolverines would rather have that than a slow paced, half court, defensive game.
